Deep Frost SpecFollow

#1 Jan 29 2008 at 8:32 AM Rating: Decent
Is there a place for this spec in Raiding?
Especially since DPS from Fire or Arcane is way higher.

This is a serious question, I have invested a lot of time and mats into my Shadoweave items and am a little concerned.

I am also open to a respec as long as it is still predominately Frost.

Any advice is helpful, and Thanks in advance.

Deep frost is viable for raids, but you will be at about 5% less damage then someone with the same damage and a 3/48/11 build. I am deep frost atm, but we are only doing Kara and I am around 950 dps. I will probably switch to fire once we go into gruuls and tk/ssc. I love the survivability though.

Deep frost is all about using your cooldowns wisely and being smart with your elemental. Only use it when it will be able to stay up for the whole 45 seconds, make sure your cooldowns are up before boss fights so you can get 2, maybe even 3 elementals and iv/trinks depending on the length of the fight.

One of our frost mages is consistently in the top 5 DPS on meters through SSC/TK. He outdamages 2 of our Fire mages sometimes, and in Kara/ZA he's typically #1.

I tried to blame it on the rest of our dps being poor, there is no reason for him to be as high as he is every raid, but it seems that he just plays his class very well. Also to note: he is the worst fire mage ever, I've had him respec a few times and he is aweful.

Frost is absolutely amazing if you are progressing as a raid and learning new bosses. The survivability along with learning fights and not owning your tanks threat and learning your positioning is really great. I think Frost is much better when learning new instances or bosses, and once they are on farm, spec fire once in a while and see what kinda dps you can get. Frost is pretty valuable to me really, he's also better at holding cc down.

hes extremely deep frost.

I think it depends on how far you are planning to go and what your guild is like.

I'm currently raiding as frost in early SSC/TK and so far it's working well for me. I tried respeccing fire and noticed a significant drop in my dps. If I get to the point where I stop being competitive with the other dpsers then I will switch to fire, but for the moment I think I'm safe.

Plus my guild is happy for people to play the spec they want to providing it works for the raid.

I'm sure if you're looking at a hard-core guild, or one that is doing more aoe encounters (where WE becomes less viable) they might have an issue with deep frost. For earlier raid encounters I've certainly not found it to be a problem.

I was in this situation about 4 months ago, where I was with my old guild that got stuck in a lack of progression, but i transferred and have gotten into a guild that is now working on Kael'thas.

Deep frost can be a good spec, it is just that with practice (along with everything) of knowing how to fit in your spell rotations, trinket usage, combustion, icy veins, etc. You will fairly easily outdps an equal-geared frost mage as a deep fire. That being said, when learning fights like Al'ar or Hydross (or vashj, as I am unsure if the enchanted elementals are frost immune -- I am thinking they are) that it would be best to spec around the boss that you are fighting. Otherwise you should be in okay shape, that is until you start getting into dps fights where you need to be downing bosses faster/etc.
