question about defense ratingFollow

#1 Jan 28 2008 at 7:45 PM Rating: Decent
So I'm slowly working on getting my defense to the pre-kara 490 lvl and to be honest I'm kind of stuck at 430. I've got the felsteel helm, just forgot to equip it when I last logged. So two questions actually.

First, with the felsteel helm, it says that it increases defense rating by 33. Now does that mean I can just add 33 points to my defense rating giving me a total of 463? So how does the math work for defense rating.

Second question, my gear is pretty much there, I want to get all the enchants and gems before I take the chance and annoy many of the regulars here and link it for the always fun "rate my gear" post. So is it better to gem for +defense and stamina or get just +stamina gems and +defense enchants.

Okay, so thought of one final question about the avoidance. I know that I need 100% avoidance unbuffed and then with holy shield it pushes it up to 102.9%, but do any other stats like defense or agility help play into getting my avoidance up?

For your first question:

No, defense rating only gives you a fraction of the rating. Getting an addon called RatingBuster is very ideal, since it converts the various ratings for you and puts them in parenthesis next the rating in the tooltip of the item.

For your second question:

As far as defense enchants go, I do not know a whole lot. For one, get the helm enchant from the Keepers of Time for added defense and dodge rating. You can get the 30 stam 10 agil armor kit for legs as well, or the 40 stam 12 agil kit for added protection (only suggest this on the Unwavering Legguards from badges). Typically my gems are like this: blue socket = stam, yellow = defense and stam, red = agil and stam (for added avoidance, swap out for spell dmg and stam if you lack dmg).

For your third question:

I believe you only need 102.4 avoidance to be uncrushable...Holy Shield adds 30% without the Libram of Repentance (from badges), or around 35.5% with. Defense helps your avoidance tremendously until 490 defense, then it starts tapering off. Agility adds dodge which is a form of complete avoidance. =)

EDIT- rate up DD's response and agree

For more specific info try these:

two great links I love and use:

http://failsafedesign.com/maintankadin/viewtopic.php?t=4844

and

http://failsafedesign.com/maintankadin/viewtopic.php?t=2652

oops three, the first shows what to put all together and the easiest, simplest if you can call it that to get the stats you need. These are just guides,so if you have something on thats not on the list, it doesnt mean you are necessarily wrong but these should help, third link has specific gems, but the first link above says what to get exactly for each item.

FROM-different link as I cannot find the other but works just the same

2d. Gems

Gem choices are (generally) rather simple. As with most tanks, you'll most likely want to get as much stamina as you can get your hands on. So +12 stamina (or +15 stamina if you have access to epic gems) are most of the time your best choice.

Socket bonuses are usually not worth considering, though a few exception items in which I find them worth it do exist; [Justicar Shoulderguards] being a prime example, and [Crystalforge Faceguard] being another good example. (Note that if you check my armory you'll notice some choices being made on my gearing despite this, I have a tendency to always nab stamina socket bonuses).

In case you do want to grab the socket bonuses, Agility/Sta gems are usually the best choice for red sockets, while Defense/Sta gems are the best choices for yellow sockets. Spell damage/Stamina gems are also a viable option for red sockets, but I find upgrading threat to generally be the lowest priority.

Reaffirming: 1 Defense Rating /= 1 point of Defense. I don't know the exact translation between Rating and actual Defense, one of those links may have it but I didn't look at them :)

I would recommend for enchants as much +stamina as you can get. This would be +6 stats to chest, +12 stam to bracers, Heavy Knothide Armor Kit on gloves (+10 stam), Nethercleft Leg Armor (+40 stam/+12 agility), +12 stam to boots, and +18 stam to shield. Apart from that I'd go with +12 Dodge to cloak, +40 spell damage to weapon, Keepers of Time glyph for helm, and the appropriate shoulder inscription from your faction (Aldor/Scryer).

Then for gems, try to use as many Solid Star of Elune as you can (+12 stam). If you want socket bonuses and/or need some extra avoidance use Enduring Talasite for blue and yellow (+4 def/+6 stam) and Glowing Nightseye (+5 spell damage/+6 stam) for red. I personally feel the bonus to Dodge/armor from agility gems is negligible, and since Tankadins don't need crit, one is much better off getting some spell damage to help their threat instead.

You need, as stated above, 102.4% avoidance to be uncrushable. Defense will help a lot to reach this mark, even after 490 Defense as it still will add a small amount of block/dodge/parry. That said, those avoidance stats (block/dodge/parry) are what gets you to that magic number, along with miss chance. Agility helps up your dodge, but the benefits of other stats far outweigh the benefit getting agility would grant you. If you can pick up agility without sacrificing other stats, go for it, but don't actively seek it out.

The conversion rate changes with every level. At level 70, 1 defense Rating = 0.423 defense skill.
