Destro Spec Group LevelingFollow

#1 Jan 28 2008 at 3:23 PM Rating: Decent
My siblings and I (and a friend) just decided to reroll alli characters on a new server. We have a hunter, a warrior, a shaman (me, god I feel so worthless) and a warlock.

I know that while leveling a destro lock is mana inefficient and therefore not desireable. But if he was life tapping and I was healing to be a mana battery, would destro produce better dmg than affliction?

I feel like the crits and burst damage would be more worthwhile to this particular group than the slower dots on each target. However, I figure people have previous experience with lvling as destro within a group.

So...thoughts?

Leveling destro, even with a mana battery and group isn't a good idea. You'll need that mana to heal the warrior (assuming they'll play a tank) and others, and you'll find yourself going oom if you keep healing his life taps (plus he could use drain life to get health back anyways).

Even if this works, it'll confuse you and your friend, because if you raid end-game, you'll be wasting mana out of habit every time a warlock lifetaps, and your friend will continuously life tap and expect heals.

Even though the dots wont seem to do much, on longer fights they will help a lot, the debuffs are great, and affliction will pull less aggro, saving everyone some mana and energy.

But if you can find a way to make it work, go ahead, this game is about having fun after all, so do what you like.

So you're not going to be Main Healer, just gonna heal him?

In certain group situations Destro is just as viable as Affliction, and in fact will drastically outdamage Affliction if done correctly.

Life tapping is not really the answer though. I don't know why you arn't going to be Main Healing, but since apparently you're not you definatly could throw him some extra mana, but it seems rather pointless when the other DPS would end up being Warrior and Hunter, in which case certain Totem drops would boost overall DPS more than feeding a lock while simultaniously not doing damage.

The Lock just needs to have a good amount of food/drinks handy and a good sized mana pool. Life tapping works wonderfully still, even with a reduced hit point pool, but this is because a Lock can run dry both HP and MP and then sit and Eat AND Drink, using Lifetap as a balancing tool to minimize downtime.

You will lose some of the utility you would have had, but if you're playing well enough you can keep up DPS with a Mage which is unheard of for a Fliction/Demo until high 50s.

Just make sure to have the Lock using the right spells. Especially until later or on high-hp monsters, DoTs are worthless with the exception of Immolate. The GCD and wasted mana will downplay the damage capability. Hell, even in very late game on regular monsters and weak Elites a Melee will far surpass plain DoT damage, where Immo + Incinerate comes into play, just to keep up. Obviously if multiple un-CCed monsters are engaged, tossing on Agony around will help your dps, as well.

Give it a try, don't use Lifetap like an Affliction when you're not Affliction, though - play like a Mage who happens to have this wonderful balance tool.
