I'm too low? (Rant)Follow

Hello everyone. I don't normally post, but today I had a situation that I need to get off my chest. Sorry for the long post.

Here the events that lead to my displeasure. I was leveling one of my many alts in Westfall, trying to complete the part with the Knuckle/Highwayman and someone else quest to run VC after. Now I was only level 15 and the mobs were 17-18. I was not having any trouble with these guys at all by myself. In fact, Frost Mage FTW. There have been several other people in the same area doing the same quest, so I'm sure they are near VC in the chain. No worries for a group here. Well, among the people questing here is another mage (level 20) having trouble finishing. Nearly every pull some would help them finish the mobs off.

Everyone turns in their quests in and quickly a group is formed for VC. This was going to be easy. 18 War, Pally, 17 Pally, 15 Druid and me (Now 16 Mage). We get to Moonbrook to summon the 18 Pally (wanted to train level 18 skills), no biggie. The warrior leaves the group and the level 20 Mage is invited. I think "OK we still have a good tanking group with healers still, we can do this".

All of a sudden I get booted, Warriors back in, and they have a full group. Conversation goes like this:

Me: "What just happened?"
War: “You’re too low for VC"
Me: "Excuse me? I’m higher than the Druid"
War: "(insert Mage name) can do a better job too."
Me: "You mean the mage who couldn't complete his quests that you and I both helped him with?"
War: "Maybe next time."

I couldn't believe this could happen. I was so mad; I dumped all my VC quests and did the mage robe quest, and most of Redridge. I had hit level 18 in a little more than an hour, when I got a pst from the still level 18 Warrior.

War: "Grats on 18. Still need VC?"
Me: "Nope, I dropped the quests."
War: "NP, I can share them with you."
Me: “Didn’t you already run VC?"
War: "We couldn't complete it. Kept wiping."
Me: "Karma, maybe next time."

I guess in the end I was better off, but why do people just naturally assume that a players level automatically translates to skill? Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Maybe because of new level skills you learn, the fact lower level players draw more aggro from mobs, the fact that everyone is under the impression that higher level makes them better... who knows.

Generally people looking for quests to finish are lazy, want it done fast and you'll never meet again. They also seem to think that higher level is better (since lv 70 I think I must have been asked by 100 lv 66s to help them with Ring of Blood for example when I'm guessing there are loads of lv 66 mages who would help - I always refuse as its a quest I don't need that someone else would.

But yes - your story is pretty much the reason why I avoid group quests levelling any character and communicate little whilst levelling. Pretty funny they kept wiping

Wouldn't get to bent out of shape if I were you. Maybe the person who kicked you didn't know that the other mage was a dud. Difference between 16 and 18 at the level in VC is something to be considered. But a bad player sucks no matter what the level.

You ARE too low for VC.

As I recall he is level 22. You are level 16. 6 levels difference means that you'll have a great deal of spell resists (misses in reality) on him, cutting your damage massively.

You're also going to be strolling around there with a pretty hefty aggro radius around you, as lots of the mobs are higher than you.

Sorry to hear about your experience.

Don't sweat it. WoW is full of idiots. You just happened to run across some.

Finding a group for VC is usually pretty easy. If you got booted, just look for another group. Mages are always welcome into parties. Even better - put a group together yourself.

Then, you can take your frustration out on the mobs while you clean house :)

EDIT - I forgot to address your level. Yes, lvl 16 is kinda low for caster DPS in VC. You would have had a lot of your spells resisted on the bosses. I would recommend that you are not more than 2 levels below the final boss of an instance. The only ones that can get away with that are healers (since heals aren't resisted).

Of course, you can still do it...but it will be harder. If your group is up for the challenge, then all is good.

Wowhead lists Deadmines as being 15-20. There shouldn't have been that big of an issue with your level. (skill > class > spec...or something like that)

Wow website shows 16-24

Yeah, the very first part of it is fine at lvl 16. VanCleef is not. Of course, it is not impossible to kill him with a 16 in the group, but it seems they had trouble anyway. He certainly would not be better than another mage at a higher level unless they were completly stupid.

Old instance design is less than great. The ideal level for the start and end of the instance is different, especially in Uldaman.

All the bosses in the old world instances have been gimped. It decreases the level difference from start to finish - which is nice. However, they forgot to lower the level requirements for the drops....

I went through RFK with my warrior alt at lvl 28. Kicked butt. Got the shield drop - YEA!!! So at lvl 29 I get group for Gnomeregan. We get into instance, and I go to equip shield.....lvl 31 requirement. DOH!!!!

I just assumed......well, you know what happens when you assume :) Yes, I felt quite stupid after that one. Went back to playing my mage...
