First time in kara and this gear worked for meFollow

#1 Jan 27 2008 at 9:06 AM Rating: Default
this is just meant to be an example for ppl wondering about gear prep for kara -- i went to kara last wk for the first time and out dps'd my grp (had a lot to do with the seed pulls) and did pretty well for myself ... instead of the FSW boots i had http://thottbot.com/i28179 and instead of the wand I had the +19sta +16 dmg wand ... but anyways just wanted to give anyone who was wondering an example of my gear. I spec'd for pvp/raid and it did very well also. Anyways here's my armory

*edit -- the belt is new since my run also - i had the mindfire or w/e waistband

IMO trash damage means nothing. If your struggling on trash then boss will whoop you.

Boss damage is the only stat a raid leader should care about unless someone is grossly under DPSing the trash. So your DPS position on the chart is going to be very skewed cause of the Seed, and really doesnt depict your actual usefulness.

But, I would say your gear is a good start to dpsing in kara.

So you put yourself as example Kara startup because you ODed your group?

May I ask how many bosses did you kill in that run and how many tries did it take? How many wipes did you have? How long did it take you? What was your group set up?
In my opinion that would be bit more important than you as individual out dpsing your group.

My guild entered Kara 3 weeks ago, all but one of us for the very first time. So far we had 1 wipe on Maiden, 1 on Curator and 2 on Prince (eternal infernals dropping on our heads excuse of course). We tried Shade once and didnt get him, we didnt try Netherspite yet. We had all 3 Opera events.
(And Attumen didnt drop gloves for me and Prince didnt drop the dagger.)

I do not have my damage meter up because I do not want to be disturbed by it.
I know I am out dpsing everything that moves on Illhoof because of SoC, I know I probably do not do amazing dps on Curator because I have AR/sta heavy gear on him and my +damage drops a lot.
What is important for me is that I keep my role of being second on aggro list all the time.
Same goes for fearing the lion in Oz group, I take that as my first duty and dps as second.
I was complimented of being the far top dps on Prince by far, but I didnt ask for actual numbers. I dont care really.

I am doing what I consider the best for my group and to make actual fight go smoother and faster with as less stress on healers I can. If that means my personal dps epeen has to grow smaller, then be it as long as its for the benefit of all.

Too many people think personal dps is what only counts. I am glad I dont have any of such kind in my guild.

Actually I out DPS'd everyone on bosses and we wiped 2x on moroes due to the hunter having problems trapping and then wiped 1x on R&J due to them being too close to one another. We cleared the opera event and then up to the back door for entry in tonight. No, I do not keep my dmg meter up while I'm in there ... I simply checked it before a boss fight to save/reset it to see how everyone had done up to that point. and totaled everything up in the end.

I didn't have very many resists at all except for the occasional few on the bosses but nothing that was too mana-efficient. I know how to play my class and was making this to help ppl.

I don't suffer from having other jobs ... i can effectively keep a mob CC'd with fear or seduced or banish w/o sacraficing much dps at all. and if you are having to watch yourself for "ease" of the healers then you are doing something wrong. I don't see how you could have required more "heals" by doing what you are supposed to.

I do care about dps when I'm in there because I don't want ppl gimping the grp from progressing. I know how to play my class the others should as well. I do like keeping tabs on the DPS from when we reach a new boss/after the boss because you need to be sure you aren't "carrying" ppl throughout the whole raid.

how many times we wiped ect has nothing to do with "gear check" (which is what this was meant for) as far as it related to me ... that has to do with grp makeup, bad heals, communication, planning, or tanking.

... i never pulled aggro inside the raid. if you are pulling aggro you should get your cloak enchanted, have pally buffs, or learn to use your soulshatter ... or more than likely .. get a better tank/let him build more aggro.

so if you are having those problems I'd say I'm glad I don't have ppl like that in my guild/raid?

This was my first venture into Kara as well as 7/10 of the grp members (1 healer which it was his first time as resto-normall feral/1dps rogue/1MT war that came down from our grp 1 to lead)

I simply stated that personal dps is not the only measure of success /shrugs

And no I dont pull aggro, I dont have problems with CC (I dont use succubus anymore anyway), I dont have problems with dps.
My gear was probably even *better* when I first entered Kara, but I never put myself as example for something and supported that with me topping dps anyplace.

But well, if it makes you happy.....

i didn't set myself as an example b/c i topped DPS ... i stated that it was mainly due to seed to begin with. I did out dps ppl on the bosses and i did stay alive. who do you suggest being an example then b/c i don't currently see any on the forums for someone to directly look at?

The Relevance of this thread is really not good anyway.

The gear someone needs to get into kara is subject to change all the time. I was horrible gear wise when I first started Kara. However my friends from back in the Pre-TBC days where all in SSC and I got walked through in greens.

However, in my current guild I like to set some gear standards for a majority of people. If I have my normal group of people then I like to add one or two undergeared players to our group.

I think for a Warlock it is pretty easy to know a starting point. I would say that 700-800 Shadow Damage (with fel armor) is a good number. I was holding my own in gruul and mag with around 850 self buffed. Hit rating is important but Kara bosses are not too bad on resists.

It is easy to get to these numbers. With Badge Gear and the FSW that number is very simple.

I dont think the OP was stroking his Epeen at all. For the most part in kara a lock is measured by his damage output. Just thinking over the fights in my mind there are not too many times that i have to do anything except melt face.

1. Banishing Maiden Trash
2. Fearing Roar (although there are other methods)
3. SoC on Illihoof
4. The one pull where you banish a imp
5. And of course raid leading all the fights and pulls (this is not every lock)
6. Almost forgot the elementals on shade.

So there is not much other than damage output. If you cannot put out good damage in Kara as a lock then you should be fired.

I simply noticed that some of us were probably better geared on our first Kara entering and still didnt put ourselves as example of something, damage output or no.
Entire thread is "look at me" imo and therefore yes I find it as epeen stroking.

It is nice that you have guild that can drag around undergeared people, cudos to you.
I dont.
My guild apart from one person entered Kara with me for the first time 4 weeks ago. We cannot afford to let someone tag along.
As far as dps go, I do not even look at my damage meter anymore, I know we are all doing the best we can.
You would have hard time firing me from anyplace anyway, I am the GM.

Meters can still be important, gear does not equal max dps. You can see who's underperforming hard (ie: the one's your dragging through) and tell them to read about their class.

Many people might be geared up but don't know efficient dps cycles. I've seen these people from non heroics to late SSC/TK and I'm sure they exist in T6 but by then most guilds min/max so hard those people get cut out of raid slots. It's not hard to know you're classes dps rotation, but you'd be surprised how many people don't know.

Of course theres gimmick fights (you on curator + illhoof for instance, of course your dps will be low in AR, of course it will be high spamming seeds on illhoof). But on tank n spank fights that equally favor everyone in the raid, thats a good time to judge people's dps performance.

Prince is a bad one, melee have to run out too much, spite is a gimmick fight (you'll do massive DPS in the green beam). Moroes is actually a good one but cut the trappers a wee bit of slack. Gruul is another good one though it slightly favors ranged and particularly affliction locks.

sorry that i get your panties all up in a wad there sethy ... i was looking for a warlock who had current kara-prep gear on/ and a report of how well it worked with his spec (in afflic) and never found any -- thought i'd put it out there in case other ppl were wondering the same thing.

I'm not saying im the supreme example, as you could do heroics and pay a bunch of money/time into more crafted items if you want ... not stroking my epeen as that's not really important to me as it is the forum trolls, nor did i ever think about it in that way.

when i do work on my e30, 240, or mr2, and it's only explained on forums thro a list of things rather than a documentation, i try to take pictures and do write ups for it ... because i know i would have enjoyed having it in the first place. it is the same with this thread as it relates to what i found worked for me in kara.

... if this thread doesn't help you and it upsets you so much, why don't you go /********** somewhere else or suggest better/easily obtainable gear to prep for it
