Krosh Firehand - Mage TankFollow

So those of you mages that have tanked Krosh in the Gruul's layer fight, I am coming to you for advice.

In 1 short week my guild will be moving back into Gruul's after a month off with some guild changes and working on gearing some more members. The previous mage that tanked Krosh in our last attempt is no longer with the guild, and I have been given (or taken on) the challenge of tanking Krosh.

I have been working on some stamina gear, my armory profile shows my current stam gear that I have collected so far.

I have 8k unbuffed health, and I have read alot of strategies, but I'm looking for some RL experience. Those of you who have tanked him, what kind of stats (unbuffed) should I shoot for, what kinds of potions/flasks/elixirs should I have on hand during the fight, and any general advice about tanking him that I should know.

I know mainly that I will be spell stealing and not getting dead until the rest of the raid can come kill him, because damage is not my #1 priority.

Any advice would be great! Thanks in advance!

You are going to want about 3-4k hp more than that buffed...

If you have a paladin to put kings on your and a fortitude that should help a bit, but that is still pretty low. Just scan the AH for greens that are 'of stamina' and see what you can find.

Also, the karazhan quest trinket (+40 stam, + arcane resist) would be a nice addition as well.

The way that I did it (when we raided gruuls)...

Wind up a pyroblast (if you specced fire) and count it down for the misdirect(s),

when you see him stop moving back up some so you are out of the way of the blastwave that he will have. as soon as you see his shield go up, spellsteal it and then just throw a scorch or so every few seconds to keep aggro and build up more and remembering to keep spamming spellsteal.

Crown of the Sea Witch for the helm, the rest, do as Anobix said and go "Of Stamina" gear. Spell Hit also is a great idea.

Thanks for the advice. I want to try to get around 9k unbuffed at least.

So that I understand, damage is not important at all correct? Stamina and Hit (so that spell steal doesn't miss)

I am frost spec, just fyi.

damage does not matter at all for this fight from your perspective, just make sure that spellsteal does not get resisted, although I don't know why you couldn't just spam it anyway. you should have enough HP to take one fireball and have your healer heal you up from it.

I tanked Krosh last week and had no problems. I had on full s1 gear with crown of the sea witch instead of pvp helm. I used an "of stamina" off-hand from the AH, the revered netherwing trinket and spell hit trink from scryers. Didnt change my rings/wep/cap. The neck from PvP is great with a spell hit gem in it. When it was all done I had 72 spell hit, 10330 hp unbuffed, and over 800+dmg.
It was pretty easy, but our guild has HKM and Gruul down pretty well. I would suggest using the thread on pants for dmg and stm, and the glyph of power from shatar for the spell hit. Bring some stam food in with ya and get raid buffed over 13.5k no problem.
Good luck and have fun, its nice to do something different in a boss fight.

Thanks again for the help!

I don't PvP (ever) so that is out of the question. I will scope the AH for some gear and run a few instances this weekend.

I have the glyph and thread already cause they are awesome when I am in full raid gear. I am hoping to hit up Kara next Tuesday and get another pair of Trial-Fire Pants, and throw 3 stam gems in them, because that would help a bunch.

Well again thank you! I will keep plugging away and get my stam up as high as I can.

Any suggestions for what pots/elixirs/flasks I should use?

If you're digging for more health, don't forget the leatherworking armor kit for gloves and chest for cheap stam boosts, and spicy crawdad (30 stam) as your food. The fireball from Krosh will hit in the 9-10k range when shield is caught down so so make sure you have 12000 plus buffed and should be good to go as long as you have a good healer on you and you dont miss a spellsteal. Also as a tip put your fire ward up at every cooldown if you get caught that little bit of fire absorb could make the difference. I actually throw it up when shield is about to expire each time which is shown on deadly boss mods. Last thing, especially being frost spec, dont accidentally hit your panic button and ice block. You will have a dead mad healer behind you =).

P.S. Cancel the salvations your paladin is surely gonna put on you.

I use all green of stamina gear level 68+ and get to 10,500 unbuffed. I have never not been successful with that much raw HP.
#11 Jan 27 2008 at 9:58 AM Rating: Good
Hm... It's true that damage isnt too much of a concern as 2 other bosses have to die first, but make sure u click away ur blessing of salvation.
On one try after downing the 2 first bosses I (... shadowpriest, teh aggro monster) managed to pull krosh aggro of the tanking mage and then noticed he had BoSalv on him... oh well.

(And yes, that's a while ago... KTM ftl ;O)

Once again, did we expect it otherwise, Poldaran is on the ball! Though for the people having more trouble adding one and one to two: the spell hit is not so much for your dps spells landing perfectly, but for the spell steal. The spell steal is key to winning this fight as you NEED his shield and one or two resists on regaining his shield with a spellsteal each time he recasts it (meaning your "borrowed shield" is about to expire too) can really turn you into ashes......

Also, so that you can make up for any lack of spell hit by equipping mainly stamina gear, you could put 5 points into the talent Arcane Focus to lower the chances that your Spellsteal spell will be resisted.
#14 Jan 28 2008 at 5:30 AM Rating: Good
to expand on this, once you have downed Krosh. You can cast invis to leave combat and equip your normal raid gear for the remaining 2-3 bosses.

Thanks for all the help!

I visited the AH this weekend and such and ended up with...

9,789 unbuffed health
97 Spell Hit (also have 5 pts in Arcane Focus)

So I think I will be just fine. I still have 1 or 2 pieces that I am going to pick up before thursday, that should bump me up closer to 10k.

Comp

One thing ....

Don't be embarassed if u die the first few times you try the Krosh encounter. The absolute worst thing about the whole fight is the very very start, where you have to position him just right so that his aoe doesn't wipe the raid. Split second timing, and someone who counts the raid in, are essential. I think it took me 4 or 5 tries before I got it right - thank goodness for a patient guild lol. I'm now main Krosh tank and it's pretty simple but the first couple of times were dead scary (but great fun!!)

Thanks!

I am going to watch some videos and such in the next couple days. My guild is extremely casual, so I am not worried about causing wipes (that much).

I have seen the pull a few times, but I was mostly paying attention to burning the priest and warlock.

Im just curious, Anobix suggested starting with a Pyroblast, but I am frost spec so thats not an option.

Any suggestions on what to use to pull him? Should I just hit him with a frostbolt and then get him into position?

You should be able to time a Frostbolt, yes. If there is a resist, however, be sure you get it immediately on *you*. The main tank will usually take one Fireball, but beyond that they should all go to you.

The pull really is the hardest part of this fight. Be sure your casters know that they can unload on the priest right away - I usually purposely pull aggro just to get him in position faster, and we've had casters actually tank him the whole time when we were short on tanks. It does take on-the-ball healers to do that, of course, and you'll want to try and avoid that your first attempts, but getting the priest away from the mage, Maulgar, and the shammy (depending on how you set up the fight) is crucial.

We have someone counting down 54321 GO!
I start casting frostbolt on 3 since it takes me 2.91 secs to cast because I have a little spell haste. I then just use low rank frostbolts (or whatever) to keep my mana going - there's little time in this fight to take loads of pots, in my experience.

As long as the person counting doesn't slow down or stop, and goes as he/she says GO! all should be fine.

Thank goodness for ventrilo/TS/skype lol

Uhm, first of all, thanks for the topic, I know my hp will be enough now.

But how much spell hit do I need? I have 10.7k hp unbuffed in my pvp gear, but that's with only 30ish spell hit (weapon + glyph). I have 162 hit in my pve gear though, so I could switch some stuff out. I could use the +31 hit offhand from Netherspite for example, or my spelltrike set.

Should I focus on having as much hp as I can? Or should I stack up some more hit?
If the answer to the last question is yes, what should be the balance?

76 +hit would be optimal if you have 5/5 Arcane Focus. Honestly, though, there's no number per se. It's a function of "the more, the better" so long as you don't go beyond the max. Full damage hits are like crushing blows. No big deal when one happens. Get a spell steal resisted 2-3 times in a row, though, and you're pretty ******* Granted, that's not likely to happen often, but the more you can prevent it, the better.

Alright, thanks, guess I'm good to go.
Should I change my talents to get the 5/5 arcane focus though?
I mean, I could at least put the free point from the 10/47/3 spec in there, been getting blazing speed for kicks till now :P.

Can't wait to see how Gruul's lair goes! This'll be first time we're doing stuff with this many people since we started wow :O.

have fun and don't get flustered at stupid mistakes/wipes. Also, the trash wipes aggro after they charge, so make sure your dps knows this.

I've never seen as many dead warlocks as I have in Gruul's Lair. Smiley: laugh
