Prot & PVP build can it be done?Follow

#1 Jan 24 2008 at 5:44 PM Rating: Decent
Hello all! I have been lurking for a bit and have found some great info on this site. I do have a question? Is there a build for a prot/pvp pally? I was ret from 1-40 then went protection from 40-65 then back to ret for kicks. I plan to go back to protection but was looking for a build that gave me a little more PVP? I understand that there may not be but I thought I would ask. Also as protection only at 70 what builds would you recommend if there isn't a viable prot/pvp build?

Thanks in advance

Prot in PvP is about as useful as tits on a bull.

That's what I figured! oh well thought I would ask. Should i just go with the basic cookie cutter build then for prot?

If you're a tank, have 1 set of gear (and spec) for tanking, have a different set of gear (and spec) for PvP. To be any good in arena you almost have to heal. Even the extremely few good ret paladins in arenas spend half their time healing (which is what makes them good).

You could go to Alterac Valley exclusively and run from the PVP and tank the NPCs

I have zero arena experience, so can't comment on that.

But for BGs I found out the only way to be useful is to put on a few (or more if you have it) pieces of plate healing gear. Don't expect to full heal a warrior (even with a crit) but spamming FoL and Cleanse pulls alot of attention...

...which is where the prot build comes in handy. You can last a long time & they normally don't pick-up on that before the DPS you were just healing start taking them down quickly. Ardent Defender + Imp Righteous Fury ftw. How I love those times when I last well over a minute while 3-5 opposing players beat on me. That's BG "CC" to me. kama-kazy, but what else can a prot pally do in PVP?

Other times it's handy to sit in the back healing the ranged & other "true" healers, but you'll still need healing gear to pull that off or you're OOM very quickly.

So to answer the question: if you're spec'ing prot, spec 100% for PVE and don't talk big in PVP.

PVE: wowhead;0/46/10 put the last 5 where you want them.

Precision helps reduce parry's from bosses (which decreases incoming damage) and increases out-going damage/threat.

PoJ helps with our worst enemy - spells. Plus can be fun for those times your group is poking fun at you & you decide to take Crusader Aura off. Plus helps keeping you from getting stuck when on auto-follow :P

Imp Judgement can increase DPS and threat (at the cost of mana), but it's more useful function is to reduce the times judgements not up when you want to Judge/threat spike a MOB (i.e. just went for squishy w/ taunt down, came out of CC, 2 MOBs left and Conc. seems to expensive, ect...).

Precision makes sure that you hit them more, which in turn actually increases your chance for the boss to parry your attack.

Combat Expertise is the talent that reduces the parry rate of the mob you are attacking.

It's fun at low levels because you are unkillable, but you will be pathetic in higher level places (spoken from others, who I kill, experiences)

The problem with Prot in PvP is that it's only good against melee, and only against opponents who are actually attacking you. Anything that doesn't meet both of those qualifications will either wreck you or just ignore you because your damage amounts to little more than an inconvenient nuissance. And you can't heal or heal-tank as well as a Holy Paladin can.

I found there is somewhat of a niche with prot pallies and warriors in holding nodes in arathi and EotS. When I hit 70 I went and pvped for a while as prot just for fun and found this to be quite useful where you can hold nodes by yourself long enough for allies to come help.

I think arenawise though there would be no point at all unless you were lucky enough to keep getting rogue teams. That is the best part of pvp when those melee characters sit there attacking you and wonder why the hell there health goes down but not yours. Unfortunately most wont keep doing that after the second or third time =(

Depends on the "PvP" you are doing. You can do BGs as any build, with any quality of gear, with any amount of skill or lack there of. You can defend nodes relatively well in EotS and AB, and you can carry flags or escort FCs in WSG. And of course you can tank in AV.

If your goal is arena, prot is probably the least useful of builds a paladin has available.
