New Player Outlands/Ele questionFollow

#1 Jan 24 2008 at 10:32 AM Rating: Excellent
Hello everybody. I'm a true newb to WoW (just started a while ago) that's finally getting close to the point where I have to enter the Outlands. I am currently level 54 Enh shammy right now (and should ding 55 tonight ::fingers crossed::). I've heard conflicting opinions on what level I should enter the Outlands. Some suggest that I should head for the Outlands as soon as I hit 58 to get some of the gear drops there. Others suggest that I should do as many quests as I can in Azeroth because of the xp bonus and so that I can save as many Outlands quests as possible for the gold when I hit level 70. I was wondering what your opinions were on this matter (I'd ask on the O-boards... but I'd rather not have trolls ruin things for me)

Second Question: I am planning to respec Elemental soon. The question is when should I spec Elemental? From what I've read, I hear the Outlands have some nice gear for Elemental but I'm not sure when the ideal level would be to respec. Also, what kind of stats should I be looking for? I've read a couple of endgame guides for Ele so I saw how I should get some spell hit and spell dmg and stuff but I'm not sure what I should be aiming for as I level. (Small question on the side: How does one fight as an Ele Shammy? I'm used to melee so I don't know what the spell rotation is and how one normally kites as an Ele)

Sorry for the long post (tl;dr? lol) and thanks in advance for any help

I would say that you should take quest reward gear that is good for elemental and once you have half the gear or more you need, then switch.

It used to be Outland at 58 no matter what, but that was before the XP boost. Nonetheless, if you plan to go elemental, I'd urge you to go to Outland early for the gear.

When you have the gear. Outland as ele with enh gear will be brutal; stay enh until you can make almost a full gear swap.

Spell crit and +damage. STA/INT will get thrown in too. Ignore spell hit: until you get to raid-level bosses, your talents will give you more than enough.

Get melee out of your head. You want to do the opposite: fight at range. For grinding, drop a totem farm at max range and spam lightning bolt. Lots of lightning bolts. Lightning bolts will pretty much BE your spell rotation.

For grinding, there's no need. Despite the lack of pushback resistance, LB is still more effective than kiting since our shocks are on a cooldown and totems are stationary.

I agree with everything everybody has said so far, for the most part.

I would immediately start checking the AH for any outlands greens mail with stam, int, spell dmg, and spell crit.

I know you can get "of the Sorcerer" which is stam, int, and spell dmg and there's another one which is int, spell dmg, and spell crit but I don't remember what the "of the" is for that one.

If you check the AH a few times a day (usually when you log on and before you log off and if you happen to find yourself in a big city may as well check) you should be able to put together a fine set of ele gear before you even go to outlands.

As soon as you get to Outlands and complete the initial quests in Thrallmar/Honor Hold you'll find that there are 2 or 3 quest rewards that are VERY nice for an ele spec.

Once you can get to around 300 +spell dmg you should have no problems with most of the quests in HfP.

Also, as far as a spell rotation I would recommend starting off at max range (and for the love of god take the Storm Reach talent) and throwing out a couple of LBs. If the mobs is close enough, hit it with frost shock to slow it down, then another Lightning Bolt. At this point the mob should be fairly close to dead and you can finish it off with an earth shock or a couple melee swings.

Remember to keep Water Shield up once you get it and you are set.

PS A Note about Totems
Yes, totems are what define the shaman class. However, while grinding, dropping 4 totems on every pull can be a significant drain on your mana. If you are in an area where you can pull mobs for 2 minutes without moving, by all means drop 4 totems. If you are in a situation where you have to move to get mobs, you should consider dropping only Wrath of Air Totem (once you get it) and possibly Totem of Wrath (assuming you spec for it, and why wouldn't you?).

Oh wow thanks for the helpful responses! It makes me wonder why I even bother reading the official forums. Also thank you very much for listing out those items for me bigdaddyjug.

Unfortunately for me, I play on a low pop server and so the AH tends to be barren (at least compared to when I played for a bit on a high pop server). I guess I'll just have to hope for some nice drops in the Outlands with some good quest rewards.

So from what I understand, the stats I should be looking for are sta, int, spell dmg and spell crit right? What's the relative ranking for those stats? (In case I need to choose between them)

...of the invoker I believe.

This is worth quoting and posting a 2nd time, just to reinforce the wise advice.

I would say for just staring in outlands the ranking would be:

Stam > Spell dmg > spell crit > int.

Outlands mobs have a lot of HP compared to same-level mobs in Azeroth and you're gonna take a few hits no matter what you do (barring crit strings).

Spell dmg is the single thing that will increase the steady DPS you need when grinding/questing.

Spell crit will basically act as another form of MP5 for you, lowering the cast cost of spells after a crit.

Finally you do need a decent mana pool, but I would strive to keep your HP and mana at about the same amount until you get around 67 or 68, at which time your mana pool should start to be larger.

Edit: Just because your server is lower pop doesn't mean you shouldn't at least check the AH for some of those outlands greens. If you can't find any of those find the highest level mail "of the Eagle" that you can to start outlands. The extra stam and int will do you some good until you start getting quest rewards.

Also, run Ramps and BF over and over until you get the ele sham drops out of there. You get excellent Thrall/HH rep from them, very good exp, and there is a phenomenal chest that drops in one of them (sorry I don't remember the name or even which one it drops in) and it is totally worth farming as it can easily last you until 68+.

There are a lot of vanilla posts here.

Don't go Elemental until you hit 62 or 63 and get Water Shield, I forget which level it actually is. Your solo grinding/leveling efficiency will be absolute *** compared to Enhancement until you get it, and you're only making it harder on yourself if you respec before you do. You'll be drinking all the time and you'll hate it.
