Hi there, I'm a recently a convert from FFXI. Well, not convert, just taking a break I guess. Anyway, I rolled a hunter and he's lvl 35 and I'm grasping it just fine.

I started an alt warlock, hit 16, and it is a little more in depth and I just had a couple questions.

1. I've been keeping my sword, staff and wand skills capped. Is that the proper way to go or is one weapon enough? I tend to like the wand as it "seems" to give me the best DoT to go along with my DoT spells.

2. Whats a good number of shards to keep on hand? I've got about 15, but I'm not going through them all that fast. Could I dump 10 of them for more bag space?

3. Drain life ... I just got this, but it doesn't seem like I'm draining as much HP as damage I'm taking. Am I msessing up, or do I just need a higher rank of the spell.

Thanks in advance.

Hello ,Welcome to lockdum : )

1. It really is not important to keep the weapon skill up on your staff and swords. You are looking for the stats on the items.Stamina, intellect, spell damage
etc..Basically what benefits your lock. As for the wands I would recommend skilling up.Eventually you will get to where you won't really need to use it, but that is always an emergency at early levels of running out of mana.

2.You obtain soul shard bags to keep as many as you can on you.it is said to at least have a minimum of 10 shards on you at all times. If you need to create a healthstone for yourself, create a soulstone to put on you or targeted party member,to summon up your demon in case he dies or if you die and also summoning targeted party members to your area. Depending on which route your going on the warlock tree lines some spells require a soul shard to use.So having these in abundance is a good thing : ) .

3.Now alot factors in this one. 1. your current level you won't see big results from it.2. Which skill tree did you choose? The affliction line actually boosts this spell up. At early levels I would suggest the drain hunting method. I assume you have gotten big blueberry "voidwalker".

1.Send in blueberry "let him build up aggro"
2.begin your cast sequence of corruption, curse of agony, immolate if you want and then use siphon life to continue draining while your demon tanks for you.
3.If you should draw aggro from voidwalker I would then one-use my wand until he dies, fear then drain life until dead. But if the mob is still hitting you I woudln't recommend using the drain life because he'll just break your channeling. Now in later levels as well yes it does get even better for you : ).

I would keep my weapon skill up simply for the fun of being able to fight lower level players without doing anything other than auto-attack; you really only need to keep your wand skill up for if you were to run low on mana.

I would suggest keeping about 12 on hand, then dumping them if you need extra room for items. Later on, you'll generally want a lot more - but that isn't until you get soul-shard bags. In end-game, if you're running instances or grinding as deep affliction, your primary demon will be the imp (mana battery - dark pact; +stam boost - blood pact), which requires no soul shards to summon. PvP on the other hand is shard-intensive *shrugs*.

Drain-life doesn't especially shine until you've gotten 5/5 fel concentration, as it prevents interrupts and makes it more mana efficient. You should be able to drain-tank effectively against yellow mobs without any problems; orange only requires a bit more variation in cast sequence (controled fears), although without CoR you'll have a harder time kiting safely - so clear the area before a quest boss. I would also suggest drain-hunting for the earlier levels (pre-dark pact), which makes imp vw a great use of three talent points.

I really don´t like the idea of drain hunting. i find draintanking alot better, and faster.

I would spec like that at level 35

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=IVMrVMfk

Always have you imp out.

Dot 2-3 mobs up and than drain-tank them yourself, replenish your mana by using Drain soul every now and than. Finish your cast once nightfall proccs and than hit
your SB button, with 2-3 mobs DoT´ed with Corruption Nightfall should proccc fairly often.

Of course you want to spend your next 5 points into Shadow Mastery,
than Dark Pact than into Contagion

Not at level 16 though. Until you put points into into things like soul siphon, fel concentration, and siphon life, you're better off leting your pet tank.

Welcome to the "dark side." A lot of us started out in FFXI. You may not want to leave, either...

Keeping melee weapons at cap isn't really necessary, as a warlocks aren't at their best in melee. We aren't red mages here.

Keeping wand capped is an excellent idea. The wand lets you keep your distance while still doing a bit of damage.

If you're not using them fast, don't worry about it, especially at your level. Keep enough on hand to make health stones and resummon your minion as needed. It's no fun trying to kill something with the imp just so you can get your voidwalker back...

The number of stones kept on hand tends to go up as you level, and if you end up grouping for a dungeon (a.k.a. "instance") you'll want as many as you can get your hands on, since handing out health stones and soul-stoning the healer makes people like you.

Later on, you get access to soul bags. These bags can only store soul shards, but they tend to have more slots than normal bags. The first one you get is a 12 slot one as a reward when you get your succubus (around level 20), and you get a 16 slot one along with your felhunter (level 30). There's a 24 and a couple 28 slot ones that can be made by tailor later on, but they're not exactly cheap...

The best way to improve Drain Life is with the Soul Siphon talent, in the Affliction tree. With that talent, each affliction effect on the target causes Drain Life to drain a bit more.

Are you trying to drain-tank? That's where you basically act as a tank and your minion just is additional damage (usually done with the succubus or felhunter later on). The goal there is to drain life equal or better than what's being dealt to you. This isn't really possible until later on, when you can get enough talent points for 5/5 Fel Concentration, Siphon Life, and 2/2 Soul Siphon .

Again, welcome to the dark side. :D

Thank for all the advice.

I've gone back to using my blue snot of death pet, and letting him tank instead of trying drain tanking right now. So that lets me keep my wand up since after I DoT the mob I ust shoot with my wand. Its not very mana intensive at all.

I took a look into the soulbags, so I should get one in the next day or so when I get succy.

Again, thanks for all the info.
