I'm currently getting my S1 set, and then move on to the S1 non set.
However which gems are the best to use?
I was thinking full res...?
But I surely need some crit, ap and hr aswell right?
I currently have 9000hp, 1400ap and 20.68% crit with 2 S1 maces, S1 legs and rest are outland blues.
My res is pretty low at the moment but do I really need to focus on it if I am only doing normal battlegrounds until I get my full set?
edit: would it better to match the sockets aswell?

1400 AP isn't bad, but your crit is way low. 9000hp is pretty good unless you feel you go down too fast. I ignored the socket bonus on my s1 chest and put 3 +8 resil in them, but kept the socket bonus for the other ones.
Personally, I've been getting +8 Res for my yellow gems, and +16ap for my Reds. :) (about 50g each in AH)
If you're talking about seriously doing arenas, then you need to get to 10k HP. That's your first priority. Socket for Stam if you need help to get there. You should be able to get there once you get your full S1 set.
Your AP and Crit are Ok, and will improve as you get better gear. Once you can maintain 10k HP, you can resocket to improve your other stats that are lacking.

I'd focus on Stam, Resilience and Crit at the moment. Hit rating isn't as important in PvP since your enemies are even level, so you should be fairly set just from the +hit already on your gear.

In complete S1 set, S1/S2 weapons, and Veteran/Vindicator stuff, you'll have around:
11000 HP
1400 AP (more if sub-specced)
30% crit (less without malice)
400 res
Exact stats depending on your gems, enchants and talents. (Full sub gives +10% AP and +15% agi.)
