I've been lurking here for a while trying to make sure I'm not asking a stupid question. I probably still am, but here goes:

I've read the stickies about stats and gear pre-Kara. Basically, I want to start running heroics without embarassing myself to get more gear upgrades. My armory link is here. I have defense over 490, my armor is about 12.5k, and my dodge+parry is about 28%. My concern is that my unbuffed HP is only 10.4k. I haven't yet spent the money on good enchants or gems, so I know I can push that up closer to 11k. Do any of you have suggestions for maybe 1 or 2 item upgrades that would push me into the 12k-13k health range?

Well, In my opinion, you should run some normals first to upgrade some of your greens to blues. And as someone said earlier, star of elune (the gem) is your friend. Pop them in instead for the +6stam gems. Star of elune doubles the stam! Get the axe; grom'tor's charge from a chain quest in SMV. For enchants, get as much stam as possible. When you've done that, you would be ready for heroics.

If you do'em now, it requires ALOT from your healer...

Check my armory. I've started running heroics with this setup, and I'm still embarassing myself. I've cleared Heroic Ramps once, got kicked out of Heroic BF after the first pull once, and last night I got told I was a ****** tank and the healer left from another Heroic Ramps.

The more I do it the more I'm starting to realize that these instances are actually doable with my gear setup, but it takes some unorthodox strategies. If there's a 5 mob pull for example, there is -no way- I can tank 3 of them while 2 of them get CC'ed. Even if 3 of them get CC'ed, it's still going to be bad news usually. One possible solution? Have a hunter lay a trap, pull with multi-shot, run back to the start of the instance and feign death. Mage sheeps one. Now hunter probably has 2 mobs running after him, 1's sheeped, 1's trapped, and I'm tanking the 5th.

The point of this is that you ARE going to be embarassed at first while running heroics, since even simple pulls can sometimes require a different strategy than what you're accustomed to. You might wipe 7 or 8 times on your first full clear of a heroic.

That being said, you really should get 12k HP unbuffed. The normal mobs will hit for about 3-4k per hit. If you do something like Underbog or Mech where they have the really big mobs that tend to hit harder, it won't be uncommon for a single hit to do 4-6k.

Armory isn't cooperating for me this morning (Tues maint, I suppose) so I can't look but you should be able to start heroics though I wouldn't try PUGging them. If you have some similarly geared friends or guildies, you could start off with some of the easier heroics like Mech, Bot and Slave Pens. Even if the going is tough, it can be fun with the right people.

I started doing H Mech when my unbuffed HP was around 10k but I had already gotten my def to the 490 mark. I didn't start using the good blue gems until I started picking up some gear that I was pretty sure I'd be using for a while. I still have yet to hit the 12k unbuffed HP mark but heroic Mech, Bot and Slave Pens are almost easy for me now with a similarly geared group. Having a geared up healer is great but I've done them with some great undergeared healers as well. A group of guildies talked me into H Ramps yesterday and we got through it with only a few minor wipes and one awesome win over Omar with the Priest running up to whack him to death with his staff before dying to the fel hounds after the rest of us died.
