So I didn't train lockpicking...Follow

#1 Jan 21 2008 at 12:53 AM Rating: Decent
Apparently I was supposed to train it up on the chest in the tower in the Barrens during the poison quest. Well here I am, 52, with 94 lockpicking. Is there any way I can get it up to a decent level without going crazy?

you can still got to all the spots listed in the sticky and have no problems with mobs.

Or you can sit in a city and spam free opening of boxes (with your level of LP). Alternatively, ask your guild for lockboxes of your level. It should go fast(er).

Also, set up a macro for all your sealth openers

/cast Pick Pocket
/cast <opener name>

and turn auto loot on. This way you get lots of junk boxes off the humanoid mobs you attack, which will help you skill up.

Engineers get to make their own lockboxes up to a certain level. You could go hit a guildie for one.

If you are a normal person: No - You will need to go a little bit crazy. Not quite "The Queen is a Reptilian from Zeta Reticula" crazy, but certainly "Best Friend is an invisible rabbit called Harvey" crazy.

Bite the bullet:
Go back up that tower and keep reopening the boxes until grey. That should get you up to about 175, which is a *slightly* less embarrassing than your 94.
Or: Head back to the Barrens and pickpocket every humanoid you come across. Several lifetimes of that (Welllllllll, it will *SEEM* like lifetimes) and you'll get yourself up.

You're not going to find too many people with lowbie boxes that need opening, so the Orgrimmar shouting may prove fruitless.

Then you can pick up with HiredKillers lockpicking guide.

Me? 6 hours,12 Waterbreathing potions and most of a bottle of Jack Daniel's off the coast of Desolace, gave me enough to be able to open the several dozen lockboxes that were clogging my bank up. Combined with the "Opened lockboxes will lock themselves in the mail" bug, and I was able to hold my head up with pride - AND I'd made nearly 5 silver from the boxes.

I think the gnomish practise lock maxes out at 50, but it shouldn't be expensive, being a verrrrrrry low skilled item.

There's a bug that relocks lockboxes if you mail them? So if me and another rogue kept sending a lockbox back and forth in the mail, we could powerlevel our lockpicking? Please say yes.

In theory, it would work until you go grey for that chest.

I have never had that bug mailing lockboxes to guildies as far as I know. Maybe you were talking about junkboxes or something?

My biggest problem is after the tower quest is finished, you CAN'T go back and use that box. If I could get it to 175 on that box I wouldn't be in nearly as bad a situation.

I guess I'll get to pickpocketing...

You will have to click on your lockpicking skill first, then click the chest.

Let me further simplify:

1) Click your Lockpicking icon.
2) Click the chest.
3) Repeat until you max out. Like 100000000 times it will seem like.
4) Pause now and then to gank the mob there.
5) Go to Org.
6) Get poison removed by Pally or Druid.
7) Read the rest of the FAQ/guide/stickie in question, located off the main Rogue page, and learn how to continue raising it. Until you can't skill up in SM anymore and are stuck pickpocketing FOREVER AND EVER.

I'm talking about the boxes that come from Pickpocketing specifically. I *MAY* also remember it happening with the boxes that drop from mobs, but the memory is a little hazy.

Squiggly: *YES* I am refering to the specific situation that you are describing.

Only Problem: I haven't tried it in a while (Since maxing out Lockpicking), so I can't confirm that it still happens. But it did, and I've not seen any patch notes saying that it's been fixed (But that may be immaterial). I started opening them for the guys in the trade window, following a few complaints that I hadn't actually unlocked them, when I *Knew* that I had. I haven't gone back to mailing them since.

Try it. Try posting them to your friend, AND try posting them to an alt.

(Sorry for sounding a bit vague, but I'm trying to give you enough scenario's to be able to let you play around with it: I think it's all boxes; I hope it still works; If not, confirm it with this, that, and t'other)

Back to OP:

There are other lockboxes lying around: The Mill (Althor's Mill?) in Redridge; Off the coast of Desolace; The Pirate Camp with Andre Firebeard in Tanaris; And Many Many More. Have a look at those locations to see which you can use.

Also, the Jack Daniel's I mentioned earlier will seem like a very good idea.

If the ones in Desolace are too high, try going to Zoram Strand in Ashenvale and pick the boxes that are lying around on the beach in the Naga areas. There are a few underwater too but the ones on land seem to respawn reasonably fast (though you being higher level will not be spending as much time killing mobs to pick the locks safely either.)

All of the LP guides are out of date.
They changed a lot of the lockpicking levels for lower level boxes, took me a long time to find a place that actually worked for 170+
(you can only get to 170 with the poison quest box now, by the way)

At 170 LP you need to go to Desolace (with a water breathing potion or 2), there are Water-logged lockers off the NW coast under the water. Note that there are 2 kinds of lockers in this area, the lower level ones you will need are ridiculously abundant near the shore. I'm only level 42, but I got my LP to 210 off those chests, and I believe I can still get skill-ups off them once I level again.

I unlocked a mob dropped lockbox (not a junkbox) and then mailed it to one of my alts. It arrived locked and I had to unlock it again. This was about 4 days ago...so it's still possible.

I'm curious about the item inside though. Is this item generated by the game upon drop or upon unlock/open? I seem to remember an item changing once...but that was years ago and I could be mistaken.

I slacked off on lockpicking at first too and had to do the mad dash for lockpicking. First I went to the tower in Westfall. I tried Desolace but got tired of swimming really quickly. I went to Wetlands instead and picked locks from boxes scattered around the murloc houses on the beach until skillups were getting few and far between, then downstairs in Angorr Fortress(?) in Badlands.

For the most part I've just been progressing via the suggestions on wowwiki. Just search "lockpicking" and you get a great list of areas.
