What I learned on the road to Exalted.Follow

I've been reading this forums for quite a while. So long, actually, that I remember Quor from the alla's FFXI warrior forums back when I still played that game. Anyway, I've decided to be a little more interactive here so I'm gonna pass along what I consider to be the most useful piece of information that I've learned since playing WoW. It's a bit of a long post so if you just want to hear the "moral of the story" that I learned then scroll down to the last paragraph.

A little over an hour ago I finally hit exalted with the Cenarion Expedition. Needless to say, I was excited, as well as relieved. When I hit 70 around two months ago, getting an Earthwarden was the first goal I set for myself. Well, I got a little side tracked (mostly with leveling an alt).

But the distractions that brought me away from my goal were not the primary problem I encountered along the way. My problem was one of lack of planning ahead.

When I first stepped through the Dark Portal and into Outlands (this was my first character to make it this far), I didn't pay much attention to the gold I would need for Swift Flight Form or the Rep that would be needed for various toys and patterns. No, I just picked up every quest I could and went straight through them. From Hellfire Peninsula, to Zangarmash and beyond, I just quested my way through, usually only going into instances when my quest log told me to. Even though I knew that I would one day need to get Exalted with the Cenarion Expedition, I did no planning ahead to determine exactly how I would go about getting there.

By the time I had finished almost all of my quests in Zangarmash, I was already honored and close to being revered with CE. At this point, I still hadn't put much thought into how I was going to go about getting to exalted.

It wasn't until I actually hit 70 and had the common "what now?" feeling that I actually looked up information about CE rep on various website. At this point, I realized that I might have been a little reckless in my leveling. I was almost revered and the only CE rep quests I had left according to the information I gathered was a short chain in Netherstorm. After that, I was left with no other option but to run Steamvaults "until my eyes bleed." Well, I could have done Heroic Coilfang instances, but I knew my gear wasn't ready for it.

I tanked that instance so many times that I eventually decided I needed some sort of break and respecced to resto to get the rest of my rep. That was a nice change of pace and might even have prevented me from giving up on my Druid to focus solely on my Warlock who had just entered Outlands.

I dinged exalted on the last boss of Steamvaults, and I was very happy (actually to describe my state of mind at the time as happy is somewhat of an understatement). For not only could I now get my Earthwarden, but I could finally leave this instance for good.

Anyway, my point in all of this is to pass along a bit of advice. I'm sure many of you already know this, but I'd like to say it anyway. When you first take a character into Outlands to begin leveling him (or her) there, one of the first things you should do is determine which factions you will eventually want to get reputation with, then do a little research to find out which instances you may need to run a few times and which quests you may want to hold off on until later. If I had done this when I first took my Druid to Outlands, I would have ended up saving myself a lot of time.

Great advice Kagenite. I too did not really plan ahead while doing quests in Zangarmarsh, and now I hope never to go into Steamvaults again. The only times I've been since are to help guildies get the kara frag.

On repping up with a certain faction, a good place to look is Wowwiki and then click on the faction.

The advice I was given was, when you hit around 50 or so, start checking up on Unidentified Plant Parts and buying them up when you see them cheaply (although what qualifies as "cheaply" probably varies by server). Since you get a bit of cash back for turning them in, it's really not too bad...you'll lose a little gold but nothing to cry over (rep for Earthwarden is as good an investment as any).

That is also roughly in line with the suggestion on Wowwiki...Unidentified Plant Parts > Uncatalogued Species > Quests > Instances. Myself, I'm partway through Revered without having done a single instance, and I haven't even finished all of the CE quests available.

Good solid experience to pass on to those on the long road to gearing up as a 70 druid. I too have learned the hard way that reckless questing on the way to 70 is not the smart way to go. Think he did over 40 SV runs in couple of weeks. Recall an SV weekend with 9 runs.........

Until this day (and my druid got exalted with Cenarion last summer) I still refuse to go back to SV, levelled another alt to 70, geared him up without doing too much cenarion (mage) and levelled up my hunter the smart way, who only did one SV run in the end (thank god, still get headaches and shakes thinking about SV runs).

But the good advice is valid for ALL reputation gains. Plan ahead. Actually, look up the factions page of wowwiki, it shows how to gain reputation for each level of rep (from how to get to friendly, to honored, to rev. to exalted). Use it and use the repeatable quests (especially the repeatables which allow turn ins...) For those unfamiliar with the page:

It shows rewards and depending on your class and professions you can focus on efficient levelling and reputation gathering with the factions you will need revered or exalted rep with for those really class specific epic items or profession specific must have recipes.
