Read the ******* FAQ.

The answer is the same as for any other Rogue, COMBAT SWORDS.

once you get rolling you may regret going with a night elf. They are one of the few classes whose racials don't help rogues in any way.

Gnomes get: escape artist = awesome
Humans get: perception, great against other rogues, +weapon affinity
Dwarves get: stone form (is that what its called?) which is decent
Undead get: WotF, easily the most OP racial in the game, and cannibalize which is a free bandage on a 2 minute CD
Orcs get: stun resists
Trolls get: a meh berzerk talent, people (like Xasha) have made it work
Blood Elves get: an AoE silence, magic resists, and mana tap.

Night Elves get: another stealth? and woooh you can collect your corpse faster than everyone else wooooooooh.

As someone before said, go combat swords and read the FAQ, but a hint anyway: Start out with improved sinister strike, then go over to the assassination tree and go improved eviscerate, remorseless attacks, malice and relentless strikes. That will get you to level 22 and look like this.

You can see talent progressions on this wikisite up to level 60.

Don't help rogues in any way? Hope you're joking. They might not be the best but that's a false statement.

Don't Night Elves get 'free' ranks in MoD from their stealth talent? I don't remember how much but I remember it being a boost.

Night Elves have some cool tricks. If in a long fight, you can vanish(just one example, there's a million other ways to get your opponent out of combat), get your opponent out of combat (6 seconds without doing anything).

Then sap him, start eating and immediately hit shadowmeld, he wo'nt see the transition. Eat for 8ish seconds, sap him again, wait for energy ticks and open up on him again.

I don't think race has any bearing at all towards your talent spec. All you get is a negligible stat bonus and a racial ability that may or may not be useful depending on how you use it.

Really go read Nooble's FAQ. It has, literally, a where-to-put-your-first-talent-points guide up until level 30. Very helpful if you don't know much about rogues, because there are lots of talent traps in the Rogue trees.
