Lower levels +INT, +Damage or +Specifc Spell?Follow

I am currently level 16 and have been seeing (for example) +5 to damage spells or like +5 to fire spells. Do those actually give the same benefit to a fire spell? I know +5 to fire spells won't help my arcane spells while it would appear the +5 to damage spells would work on them all.

The other part of it is, at those levels is it even worth getting +damage or +specific spell or just stick with +INT?

I read an interesting thing about +spell damage and +healing on WoWWiki which shows the math, which is nice, but seemed overly complicated for my question.

Thanks for any information.

An item with the stat "+spell damage and healing" will affect all magic schools and healing. The reason why some might tell you to stack +fire damage as a Fire Mage is because usually gear with magic school specific bonusses have a higher amount of it.

For instance, let's say you have a level 40 Staff of the Sorcerer (+spell damage/healing) and a level 40 Staff of Fiery Wrath (+fire). The Sorcerer might give you about +20 damage and healing, which is 20 to all magic schools, but the Fiery Wrath one will give you +40 fire damage instead.

So if you're using fire spells a lot, stacking +fire is easier and usually cheaper. You'll hit some high +fire damage numbers, but the downside is that it doesn't to jack to boost your other spells.

Basically you have to decide if losing out on arcane and frost damage is worth getting wicked fire damage. At lower levels I'd suggest stacking intellect and stamina, though. All the +fire gear in Azeroth won't save you if you run out of mana. Not to mention if you run out of health.

Hey there mate. Welcome to uh...Mageness and stuff, it's awesome. Anyway, to answer your questions:

+5 to damage and healing (for example) gives the same bonus to all of your Fire spells as +5 to Fire spells and effects would if I'm not mistaken, although, every Fire spell has its own ratio, meaning that say, a Fireball might only gain a bit of the spelldamage you have per hit.

At low levels, only go for +Intellect and +Stamina gear, meaning, try to stock up on Eagle gear. When you reach the 40's, Damage gear comes into play, and is pretty effective, but it's still not that big of a difference. You can pick either to max out your mana pool / health pool or go for pewpew big numbers.

Hope that answered your questions. PM me if there is anything further you want to ask.

Edit: Mazra hadn't answered as I wrote my reply, so sorry if I am not providing any new info.

Hey I also have a new mage and had the same question. Rate ups for the asker and everyone who answered. :)

Int and Sta til 40 then and worry about +spell damage later.

well I myself went as much + fire dmg as possible leveling from 1-40 on my mage with some int/spi greens in between since your not gonna get hurt that much if everything dies before it gets to you :D and as for elites theres always the blink+fblast kite combo

Any gear that has spell damage and a stat(Int/Stam) is fine for leveling. "Of X Wrath", not so much. That's really all there is to it.

My experience with +damage was on my priest. It might be different bu I doubt it. Up to level 28, I stacked +shadow damage. I think I had something like +80, pretty much all my gear was +shadow damage.

Let me tell you that I got fed up of having enough mana for one or two fights before drinking. I vendored all that junk and bought some cheap +int and +spi at the auction house and never looked back.

I'm sure in the higher levels it makes a difference, but to start - don't bother.

Thanks for the replies.

I hit 18 and ended up switching around my gear some. I was a human and I had about 1600 mana but only around 350 health points. I could nuke a lot but when I was getting hit it was taking big chunks of my total health and I sure couldn't take many before I was risking death.
Now I'm about 1400 mana and 500 health. Still not as much of either was I would like but I am able to stay alive a bit longer. I know later I will get some spells that can help me to stay alive by not taking damage but for now I guess this will have to do.

I guess my question about the +damage or +specific spell was because right now I am not sure what I want to go with. The +fire seemed to make the most sense since that I the thing I used the most but I also found that often I sort of AOE nuke mobs to death with arcane explosion so I sorted of wanted that. Now I'm accustom to being able to just switch weapons or gear depending on the spell I use at that moment but when I try to change gear here while fighting it doesn't seem to let me so I guess I have to decide before actually starting the fight.

I guess I decided I would have to experiment more but am thinking for the moment I'll try and do +INT or +STA (is that the abbreviation for stamina?) until I get some more spells that can help me avoid damage.

Thanks again for the replies.

On my mage,I have tried to cram in as much spell/frostdamage as I could since the beginning..
Got him to 43 now,and I have +163 frostdmg, and very little int (3000 or so mana, give or take)

I found that lots of damage = fever spells cast to kill something=less mana used=faster levelling :D

I've been pushing the damage on my mage since about 62. Before that, not knowing much about the game I was pushing the intelligence bonus. After I decided to go damage, I noticed a HUGE difference in the damage and especially the crits. I think I'd go damage from day one if I ever re-rolled a mage.
