Starting out as protFollow

Well, I just started a pally and so far I'm absolutely loving the class.

Granted, I'm only lvl 18, but I'm really enjoying everything that I'm capable of thus-far.

The only problem I'm having is that I was following the leveling spec offered in the sticky, but there's something about the retribution talent tree that just kills me a bit every time I put another point in there. It could be that I so desperately want a healing or tanking spot once I start getting into end-game.

So I was wondering if anyone would be able to point on where within the protection tree I should start out in and maybe some information on what direction I should go from there. I've looked at the talents and they all look too good to pass up with only 9 points available to me (everything looks so nice, it makes me feel like a fat ******* at Mc'Donalds with only 1 dollar)

I do apologize if this has been covered a million times before, but I couldn't seem to find any such posts. Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated.

Edit: If this has already been covered, could I possibly get a link to the post, I would really appreciate it if it's been covered already. I thank youa ll again.

Generally, Ret is regarded as the most efficient spec when leveling from 1-35. At or around 35, you can respec prot to take advantage of the skills that will let you grind multiple mobs at the same time (AoE grinding). I did prot from level 1 and haven't regretted it at all mostly because I usually aggro multiple mobs anyhow and the survivability is outrageous.

Do what you enjoy, that being said Ret is smoother leveling 10-35 since nothing in Prot tree is really amazing till you get reckoning. Once you get reckoning, holy shield and beyond it is a very solid leveling build. Prior to that you get survivability with no dps boost, and as we all know DPS will always trump survivability when it comes to leveling.

I second what Bodhi said. Do what you enjoy. THere are a lot of people on here that leveled as prot or leveled as Holy, but the Ret tree is going to get you levels (and therefore to the actually GOOD stuff in those trees) faster.

As for thinking you're boxing yourself out by going ret early: End-game is end-game, leveling is leveling.

If you're worried that leveling as Ret is going to hurt you, rest assured. Personally I leveled as Ret until roughly level 40. Then I switched to a hybrid Prot/Holy build because I wanted to maximize my chances at getting a group (as well as decide which spec I ultimately want to go with).

I healed and tanked many, MANY instances as Ret. I also healed and tanked many instances up until about 65 as prot/holy. Ultimately I decded on Prot.

The trick is that in the early levels, if you have the appropriate gear set you'll pretty much be able to do what you want in groups.

So do what you want but you'll get to doing what you want (raiding) faster if you level ret at least until you can pick up reckoning.
