out of curiosity, do ret pallys get into raids and stuff? or do they just suck like dilbrt says and are only remotely good for PvP

Well, you can single out Dilbrt if you want (thus invoking his wrath), but it's not just him that says Rets suck: it's game mechanics as well. Personally I have not been with a Ret in a raid, and anytime I have been with one in a 5-man they have been 3rd on damage (sometimes 4th behind me if I can really get my AOE going). I have seen Rets with tier gear, but honestly I'd be willing to bet they were Holy or Prot when they got that gear and had already used a token to get the gear for said spec, then respeced into Ret for solo/questing.

Despite that I do want to amass some gear and spec Ret to see how I can personally compare in my DPS.

I have seen 2 pally's that when ret, perform awsome in raids.

Both on Illidan, Alliance side, one is Carnij, the other is Yeshooa.

Now, to tell you what that means, Illidan has 2 whole "good" Ret pallies. One of the Oldest and most populated servers.

By good, I mean in the top 3 for dps in raids/instances. Didnt pull aggro, provided proper judgements when needed etc. And still kept their dps up without pulling aggro.

So, unless your well geared and skilled, ret is totally ****.

Edit: Oh theres prolly one or two on horde side too that are good.

They are mediocre.

Geared to the tits and played by the best they are middle of the pack. What little utility they bring to the raid doesn't make up for that fact. They have an extremely hard time finding slots, in fact most Ret pallies in a raid tend to be healers who spent extra dkp on items to build a decent set.

When you can play a Warrior or a Rogue, hell even an enhancement Shammy and do better damage (or offer windfury) why play a Ret pally. "Hey I know, I will roll for a DPS slot in an already oversaturated market, but better yet, I will play the most questionable raiding spec in the game that when played well only manages to reach middle of the pack at best. Why? Because I love mediocrity and don't know any better". Blech. If you want to raid and you want to DPS don't roll a Paladin. You are starting off with a MASSIVE handicap.

the only ret pallies i have ever seen in a raid, are usually a guild leader. whom only got the spot because of being a guild leader.

you'll probably NEVER see a ret pally in a 10 man raid (karazan). They might squeeze one in on a 25 man raid, usualy someone who has been with guild a long time.

don't count on joining a raiding guild as a ret pally and not be asked to switch to holy.

I'll disagree on the basis that Kara is the first raid to go to and most people at that time won't know better, so they might bring their friend who has been Ret forever into the raid. They may learn to deal with it, pick up his slack, and move on, OR they catch on and tell him to respec or get out.
