Feral vs. RestoFollow

#1 Jan 19 2008 at 9:22 PM Rating: Decent
Here's my delimma(sp?): I love all three specs of a druid, but I don't know which to pick. Balance is by far my favorite, but is not effective in arenas, and it's hard to find groups as dps on my realm. The real problem is whether to pick feral or resto.

Feral - I like playing this spec. It's not a favorite, but I do well at it, and I don't mind playing it. My realm is extremely short on tanks, and I'm almost guaranteed a group to whatever instance I want to run when I am.

Resto - I LOVE this spec. Not as much as balance, but I still love playing it and it is also the only spec I can be in arenas and do extremely well. Unfortunately, finding a healer isn't hard on my realm.

I plan on doing both instances and pvp, at least until I get all my badge gear. I don't plan on staying feral, as I am going to be primarily resto and balance off-spec when I get bored. Keep in mind that isn't going to happen until I am done with instancing.

So which one should I go with?

If you actually liked Balance (and it doesn't sound like you do, but just saying...), I hear that a 31/30 Balance/Resto build is the new IMBA healer in 2v2 and 3v3 arena. It sounded like so much fun, even I wanted to try it out.

All I know is that Resto druids take FOREVER to kill in PvP. We had four people beating on one; and all he did was mass-HoT himself. Took like 30 seconds. If we had a rough, it would have been game over; but no stuns made it last FOREVER.

I like Feral, though. That's what I play as. Tanking is fun, and I can put on my DPS gear and do very respectable damage as well, all with the same spec. You can stealth better than in other specs, and solo a ton of stuff. It has the most versatility, in my opinion. Unfortunately, it is a weak spec in PvP for me (although I am not the best PvPer). I notice that my team does a lot better when I spend my 5k mana pool keeping mister deadly warrior up than when I run around mangling my foes.

There's this Restoration Druid I keep meeting in Eye of the Storm. He's got the Merciless gear on and is always travelling with a Rogue or Warrior. ******* are immune to death, I swear.

We had three people beat on the Warrior and I was beating on the Druid with a Shaman to help me. We'd get him to 10% health and he'd just heal right back up with Swiftmend or Nature's Swiftnes + Healing Touch.

All while keeping the Warrior buddy healed as well.

I felt molested after that. Abused on an intimate level.

Just do a restokin specc - 34/0/27 specc - you'll lose some survivablity, but you'll get to play as resto and moonkin at the same time - can break 2k with a rogue in arenas.

Else do a 24/0/37 specc - loads more survivabilty, but less burst - very capeable of breaking 2k as well.

What???

Balance is excellent in arena. Now chillin in Moonkin all the time is not the way to go. I like to pop treants and a couple of MF's then I take on a resto druids role. Go around and healing when needed and dps-ing when not. My playstyle works well with a MS warrior and is pretty decent with a rogue.

Still resto is the king of arena no doubt. I dont like it as much in 3 vs 3 and 5 vs 5, but they are godly in 2 vs 2.

While all the options mentioned are valid and worthy of exploration, I suggest go with the spec you enjoy the most (Balance) not for any specific reason but because if that's the one you enjoy, you'll get the most bang for your $15/month. Also, if you love Balance, you'll excel with it, making you stand out from the others in your crowded DPS pool. After awhile, you shouldn't have too much trouble finding runs.

But the beauty of being a druid, though, is the ease with which we can change roles simply by respec'ing. If you schedule your PvP play, your solo play, and your instance play for different times, you can morph into the spec you need for that time.

Did you not have anyone with healing reduction (MS,wound poison, aimedshot) or were you just that vastly outgeared?

Simple, I skimmed your post, but I already know. Play what you have most fun with. I have a 70 mage, I keep trying to force play him because I'm 70 and I should be having fun. Thing is, I'm not. I rerolled a druid, whose now 32 (34~35 by the end of today) and I'm loving him. If you love Balance, and it's what you have fun with then you should play it.

It might take longer to find groups. PvP you'll do fairly good. Raids, well, you'll do okay. You can do it though, and that's the point. Most specs in this game are completely viable. Sure you might have a more difficult time getting grouped than you would if you were feral, but it's pointless to play if you don't like him.
