Friend is trying to get me into WOW after playing eq2 for a while. I first started a paladin and got him to lvl 21, not to go off topic so to keep it short I didn't like playing the Paladin.

He is currently playing a Warlock and I don't really want to be the same class as he is. So anyways I made a Rogue. I am only lvl 10 and honestly gear wise it is still pretty lame. My tunic is the green tier from a group quest (kill hoggs the gnoll or something). Rest of my armor is handcrafted white with the light armor attachments. MY daggers are the only ones I could find on broker which are 5.1 dps green tiered. Skill wise I think I am pretty well caught up. I have bought all my skills from the trainer and am trying to do the lvl 10 class quest (keyword trying).

I have found soloing I do great on single targets but if I get any adds near my level I either have to run or I die. I usually start out with the gouge attack then backstab them and either do 1 more combo point or go straight for the devastation attack depending on mobs HP.

At any point do rogues get better at soloing, or am I doomed to be this crappy at soloing? I know the paladin I played was able to solo 2 or 3 mobs at a time and my friend doesn't have problems with 2 or 3 solo mobs with his warlock.

I can't even do the stupid lvl 10 SOLO quest for my guild master because I always get 2 or 3 bandits every time I try to go to the docks. I have tried stealth but stealth apparently doesn't help much in this game (or at my rank).

Even if I had more money I haven't seen anything at the auction house I can use yet that would be a upgrade.

Stalth works real well.. problem is when a guy is alerted. he makes a noice or says something. Stop moving. Wait for him to chill out and then keep going. Also try to walk towards the backside of the mobs. safer that way than grabbing to many.

If you get an add. Gouge the add and switch back to your main target. That will buy you some time to finish off that guy. If you are still having problems get a few health pots. they are dirt cheap and you can easily take out them with that.

ok stealth is key. try to get mobs that are by themselves or are caster type in cloth (they die faster) and forget daggers for leveling, get 2 swords and just sinister strike and evisecrete it to death. Rogue is probally the squishiest leather class (squishy then most clothies also) and they dont handle adds very well, but it gets easier at higher levels. once you get sap (level 12 i think) and blind and evasion and vanish and blade flurry and all that, you'll be ok up to like 4 mobs then your screwed in which just pop vanish and your safe again. Just stick with it and you will get better. Try to stay away from things above your level. swords are best for leveling but pr-cheap shot get a mod such as outfitter to equipt a dagger when your stealth, so u can ambush, an then it will set u back to swords when u exit. Rogue is a fairly fun class once u get past the fact that without stealth every class would own you part. if your near a bunch of mobs stay in stealth and be behind then and dont get too close, u have stealth so u can pick your targets, so do so.

This is a common concern among new rogues. It seems like something I should add to the sticky, even.

Before I get into the long winded post, I'll just tell you this. It gets better. At 70, Rogues can farm better than almost any other classes. We certainly kill the fastest (but have higher downtime due to low armor).

Now, for a bit more detail, as it seems you might want some. Until level 20 or so, Rogues are easily the weakest class. We are essentially Warriors, but with leather armor and lower health. The way the skill system works is you are gradually introduced to the skills that define your class. For us, it's mostly long cooldown abilities with great effects. While other classes might have one long cooldown ability and a few short ones, we get 5 abilities on a 5 minute or longer cooldown, and only a couple at under a minute. These abilities do things like instantly return us to stealth (if it doesn't bug out, it's been broken for a LONG time), increase movement speed drastically, increase our chance to dodge attacks by 50%, cause our attacks to hit an additional nearby target along with swinging 20% faster, and a myriad of other very powerful abilities.

The nature of the game is also very punishing on low level melee classes. Monsters are much stronger at low levels compared to your character. At level 10, killing two monsters at once is an accomplishment. At 70, I can pull 5 things at once, kill them all, and finish with 70% health or better. So not only do you get stronger, but the monsters get weaker. Our signature mechanic is stun, which will help you a great deal when grinding once you have access to them. When you can keep a mob from hitting you for 70% of the fight, you'll find them much less threatening.

Speaking as someone NOT playing a Combat rogue (IE: I don't have blade furry) I can say that while Combat spec will probably allow you to level faster you can easily level in another tree. Personally I've been Subtlety since before 2.3 and post 2.3.roguenerf - the last patch - and it works fine. I can't take on too many adds at once, but three at a time I can manage.

A lot of it is just surviving until you get a few essentials as Nooblestick mentioned:

Vanish
Blind
Sprint
Evasion
Blind
Blind, in case I didn't mention it.

Thanks for the input. I will try and stick it out. I also just realized last night that I could train in other weapons besides daggers.

I have leveled a warrior, a hunter, and a rogue.

Once you all of your abilities, rogue leveling is very easy as far as killing mobs and completing quests. Before level 22(ish), leveling a rogue is sort of like those first 10 levels with a hunter in which you dont have a pet. Poisons are a serious bump to your dps and vanish will save you from death many times over.
