Hi all. Is "+39 spell crit rating" better or worse than "+10 healing and 10 MP5"?

If you really want to know how I got to that question, please keep reading (WARNING - It's confusing). If you don't care, then please just let me know your thoughts on the question.

Let me start by saying that I reviewed the illustrious stickie. That being said, I am looking at dumping my BS prof (currently only 225) since there is nothing really good that I can't buy/have guildie make for me. Sooooooo, I'm looking for a new prof.

My other prof is mining (lvl 370), and I plan to keep it.

I am tossing up between engineering, enchanting, or jewelcrafting (already have Alch on alt).

The big benefits for each that I saw were:

Engineering:
Justicebringer 2000 Specs

Enchanting:
Enchant Ring - Healing Power

Jewelcrafting:
Kailee's Rose
Blood of Amber

Now, in comparing these, I'm having a hard time deciding which is better.

Enchanting - you can enchant 2 rings, so that would max +40 Healing over a non-Enchanter.

JC - you'd need 10 of the Kailee's Rose gems to give you +40 over a non-JC (since a non-JC could have Teardrop Crimson Spinel).

Engineering - the helm is really nice. The crit bonus is awesome. No MP5 though.....but the crit bonus is probably worth it.

So - here is how I formulated my question above:

"+39 spell crit rating" is the bonus on the Engineering helm and there is none on the other helms listed in the sticky.

"+10 Heal" is calculated from .... engineering helm gives you +101 healing. Most other helms are around +70 heal. So the engineering helm gives you about +30 heal over other helms (i.e. 101-70 ~ 30). Since enchanting can give you +40 heal, I just subtracted them (40-30=10). This is the bonus of enchanting over engineering.
"10MP5" is approx what any non-engineering helm (listed in sticky) can give you that the engineering helm doesn't have.

Confused yet?

I chose to ignore the + spell crit gem because my head was already spinning...

First off the jewelcrafting gems are unique-equipped, meaning you can only have ONE of each type of special gem. Considering the benefits of other professions, jewelcrafters probably has the lowest of any tradskill-only items (+8 healing and +4 crit rating is all you can get for being a jewelcrafter).

I would honestly go enchanting, especially if you're planning on raiding the higher end instances. The engineering helm is better than tier 4, kinda on par with tier 5 (I'd personally take the T5 though for the mp5), and worse than T6. So basically you'd be taking a profession that could get replaced, while enchanting you can put the healing on rings on any gear.

However if you're not going to be a raider, the helm might be a decent choice. Then again, I don't know how it compares to the PvP helms. Blizzard has made PvP items so good, for most people they are better off just PvPing and not raiding.

I went with engineering, but in all honesty it was because my pally was my first character and I thought it looked cool.

I agree with Dilbrt though. The helm is very nice when you're starting out raiding, but it can be replaced. Unless there are other considerations involved (for example, I'm the guild engineer, plus I love it too much to change :p) you'd probably be better off with enchanting.

*Edit: I kinda assumed that you were talking about raiding there, although you didn't specify if you were. If you are into PvP though, I'd honestly recommend engineering. The toys are simply too much fun to pass up on, especially for BGs. Just be aware that most engineering craftables don't work in arena - I pretty much only use my invulnerability belt in there.

I'd take engineering. I always have tons of +heal, but my crit rates seems to be harder to raise. Sure, the T6 helm is better, but I seriously doubt I'll see it before the next expansion. If you're planning being a hardcore raider and you don't mind sinking tons of gold into a profession, go with enchanting.

Personally, I think engineering is fun as well as useful, so that's what I went with.

Thanks all. I appreciate the feedback. The way things are going, I'll probably go with Enchanting. I hav a bunch of alts that are leveling too, and can supply stuff to DE.

Thanks all.

I say enchanting. And not because I'm copying Dilbrt, but because it's a great way to make money off your alts. In fact, Enchanting is a great way to make money. You'd think there aren't any actual enchanters around - just disenchanters with several fat sacks of cash, all handmade by a 375 leatherworker.
