If you do not want to heal....don't. Regardless of what people tell you about it being your job as a priest. When LFG, type SHADOW:DPS in your comment, and keep grinding out your quest. If you get random invites, just reply: I am Shadow (cause some people "do not read comments". Makes life a lot easier, and as long as you remain consistent in your grind.....people will know you as shadow, and the blind invites for healbot will cease.

I didn't read all of these comments word for word, but my experience has been this . . .

I'm a lvl 40 Shadow Priest in one of the large guilds (500+) on my server and the guys in the guild only care about one thing. Raiding and getting their gear.

Out of the 500 there are only about a dozen priests, so if you're on, they're calling you. "we need a healer", "will you heal for us?","We'll pay you 5g to heal for us". It doesn't matter what you want or need, as long as they get theirs.

Most of the time I say no unless there's someone in the group who's name I recognize or they have helped me in the past.

And don't expect a thank you when the boss is down, . . everybody just drops from the group and they're off on their merry way with their loot.

O.K. . . I feel better now. I've blown off some steam.

Leveling my priest, I healed (main healed) every instance from Dead Mines to Stratholme (and I was only level 54 when I went into Stratholme). Not once did I have any complaints. In fact, I enjoyed healing so much I switched to Holy at level 55 and never went back. Leveled from 60 - 70 as a Holy/Disc and was just slightly behind the curve from the shadow priest in the guild. Of course, when I was healing I did keep a set of up to date healing gear on me. And yes, if I was the one healing, or even DPS'ing and a piece of +healing gear dropped that would be a good upgrade, I'd roll on it.

If you aren't prepared to heal 90% of the time levelling from 1-70 then roll a strict DPS class. Priests were defined as the healing class by Blizzard, and as such everyone views them as exactly that. At the end of the day, the result of any instance is down to the healer and the tank. Do you want to be the one that's thinking "I could've saved us from wiping 19 times, but I just want to play Shadow!"?

Healing is crucial to groups, and if you can do it, you should do it. When you hit 70 it's a different ball game, since raiding Kara (or anything higher) you'll play one spec and one spec only. Heal up to 70, no questions asked, then you can Pew Pew away!

Sorry, but I do not think you know the game very well, if you think that "everyone" and Blizzard feel that way. If you even read some of these threads, you'll mind a lot of conflicting ideas on how classes should be played.
Now, below is a copy of the first few paragraphs from the official WOW website, in reference to the priest class. All emphasis is mine, so read carefully:

Priests are the masters of healing and preservation, restoring their wounded allies, shielding them in battle, and even resurrecting their fallen comrades. While they have a variety of protective and enhancement spells to bolster their allies, priests can also wreak terrible vengeance on their enemies, using the powers of shadow or holy light to destroy them. They are a diverse and powerful class, highly desirable in any group, capable of fulfilling multiple roles.

According to what Blizzard actually thinks, priests are healers and DPS AND everything in between. I do not think there is any other way to interpret that.

Anyways, this thread is totally last month and we were moving on until your forum necromancy raised it ;p.

Sorry to post on that *old* thread but I remember having played with a priest named "HealMePlease". No need to say he wasn't healing!

I have never had trouble healing with this spec. (That's pretty much straight-up shadow.) You just have to be open minded. If you're stubborn and refuse to play half of your class because you want to play the other, just don't make a class that can fit into multiple roles.

Seriously, if you ONLY want to DPS, make a Warlock or something.
