One of the shammies in my guild just made the switch to resto after getting some gear from kara. He isn't the best healer yet. I was wondering if some of you resto guru's could give me some links about healing and how to heal for him to read up on. Thanks for the help.

Get lots of heal+ and int+ gear, try not to die, try not to let anyone else die, and try to be as mana efficient as possible with your spells. Also be resto spec. Healing is pretty straight forward and easy.

Spirit is crap for a shaman and mp/5 is the way to go. Use earth shield when possible between fights so it doesn't drain your MP while in battle and abuse chain heal because it's the most efficient spell we have.

Two really good guides you can point him to:

And a few random tid-bits in no particular order:

  • Lesser Healing Wave is NOT your bread-and-butter heal! It's a mana sink: even a Chain Heal that doesn't jump is more mana efficient. Only use when speed is essential.
  • Chain Heal IS your bread-and-butter heal for most fights beyond kara. The targetting system for jumps is now pretty much flawless, and it's our best healing/second and healing/mana (not counting Healing Stream). Get the talent too.
  • Pre-casting becomes essential in raiding. Do NOT wait until damage is taken to wind up a heal (reactive healing), that's how tanks die. Instead, start casting and cancel if it's not needed.
  • Downranking is your friend. The -healing penalty isn't bad until you get as low as rank 7 or so; I use 8, 10, and max.
  • You can use rank 1 Healing Wave to stack/maintain Healing Way and/or proc Ancestral Fortitude.
  • Manage your mana pool. For raids, you need longevity, which means m/5, which means full-PvP gear isn't gonna cut it. Bring and use LOTS of potions. If you run out of mana, a wipe is likely unavoidable.
  • Don't forget your cooldowns: most fights Mana Tide can be used more than once.
  • Earth Shield is your friend. You can use trinkets and Wrath of Air to boost the healing when it's cast, but it should always be on someone.
  • Know what you can Purge, know what you can Grounding Totem, and know if Earth Shock will be needed for that fight.
  • Totems are nice and all, but don't refresh them until healing is in the clear. There's nothing worse than refreshing your tree farm and then watching your tank die as your GCD resets.

interesting tip about earth shield. I only realized last night that my healing affects it. We were farming in elemental plateu and I asked the tank how much health he was getting back. More than what the buff says.

I still don't use chain heal as much as I should, but I'm getting much better at it. I still use max healing wave alot. On trash I don't really care about efficiency. On some Kara trash I'll spam lesser healing wave while the priest is getting in with his greater heals. Helps fill in the gaps. I don't care about mana efficiency on trash too much. But sometimes I'll just spam healing wave. Just have to start off early enough.

Totem management can be a pita. I know I get low on mana, but sometimes we need that windfury. The curator fight was one example. It's a fairly long fight. And I did have to relay totems once (maybe it was twice?). The priest and I just barely had enough mana for that fight. But we still burned through pots pretty good.

I/we are struggling with post shade stuff now. That dragon fight seems impossible (although so did Moroes and Curator at first). You can forget about chain heal. I'm lucky if anyone is in range of my heals at all. I'm getting frustrated with these type of battles. I admit I'm not that good at dancing around and healing at the same time. So many things to watch at once. I have to watch everyone's health, watch where I'm standing (so I'm not in those black dots), watch the beams. then move to the back of the room during that enrage thing. It's a lot to handle. And I don't know about totems in that fight. I think they are being wiped somehow. And everyone is so spread out, I don't know how useful they'd be.

But I did get those cool shoulders from Curator. They look so cool on a Tauren.
