Ice Barrier questionFollow

For the sake of the question let's just use rank 1 Ice Barrier with no bonuses. So that's 438 damage total that the barrier can absorb before it breaks. Let's say the mage gets hit with an attack that does 600 damage. 600 - 438 = 162. Ice Barrier will break no matter what, but will the mage take 162 damage?

Why wouldn't the mage take the other 162 damage?

Ice Barrier can only take a certain amount of damage before it breaks, and otherwise the mage is invincible. So, I had thought that, perhaps, even if it still had a single point of damage left in itself, it might take any one more attack, be it capable of 1 damage or 1000 damage, and then break, and only then would the mage be vulnerable.
