You're either going to do a lot of damage, or you're going to be a well-armored tank. Unfortunately you can't do both *well*, but you can do both *mediocre*.

You're still going to be wearing mail/plate so you'll have a lot of armor. If you want to do good DPS, use a two handed weapon. If you try to go high dps with a shield, you won't do well.

most peeps find out about they're class/spec and find out ret pallies go best with bare hands.

if you're speccing ret, use a 2h. as slow a one as you can find. only way you'll dps with a 1h as a paladin is to be a shockadin. you won't do as much as a well played ret, but it'll be more than ret w/ a 1h.

No, I have to agree. A talent tree that gives +6% damage when wielding a 2hander does best with their bare hands ;)

Before all else fails OP, at least read the talents you'll be working towards.

Usually two hander is recommended due to getting the full effect of the primary damage seal - seal of command. Like others said, slow such as 3.5 or 3.6 is usually nice and most of the gear would have strength and agility. Most dps classes arent armoured enough, they sacrifice that for the dps. Luckily you can wear plate. Higher end stats to look for are crit rate of at least 25 or more at 70 and at least 1200 attack power usually unbuffed.

Here is a quote from the FAQ under jack's posting that gives you an idea, I would read it thoroughly, at least for ret as you progress in it.

Quote:
2.4.4 What kind of gear does an end-game DPSing Paladin look for?

There are 2 kinds of end-game Paladin DPSers, there are Retadins, and there are Shockadins.

Retadins follow almost the same philosophy as warriors, looking out for +AP, +STA, +Crit, +Hit, etc.. The only difference is possibly a slight amount of attention to Int.

A Retribution Paladin trying to get into raids should work for the following stats:

1100-1400 AP
25% crit
9% hit (3% from precision helps)
~8k hp
~4.5k mana

You might be wondering if you should get spelldamage, however there is actually very little benefit for a Retribution Paladin to get spelldamage. Focusing on it would take away from other stats like crit rating and AP which will help you out more in damage.

Shockadins are like plate wearing spell casters as they tend to focus damage through Seal/Judgement of Righteousness and Holy Shock. Their gear will be loaded with spell damage, spell crit, intellect, and Stamina. A shockadin spec usually isn't used in raids so I won't list any requirements for it here. Shockadins are generally what holy paladins do when they aren't raiding to speed up their own grinding/questing or they are strictly PvP

2h = more damage.

2h weapons have higher weapon damage. Higher weapon damage = more damage from SoC and CS.

The Retri tree increases 2h damage by 6%.

How could you possibly use anything else? XD

But seriously, if you happen to find a one-handed weapon, say from an instance boss, that lets you do more damage (damage, not dps) than your current 2h, use it. In the end you're more likely to find a stronger 2h weapon, and Retri is meant for 2h weapons, but don't let that just instantly turn you off from all 1h weapons.

In the end, use whatever weapon will do more damage. 95% of the time, that's gonna be a 2h weapon.
