+heal vs critFollow

I know this topic is a dead horse and has been discussed many times, but...

I am now in the process of applying to bigger guilds that are doing more than just Kara. Currently, my +heal is sitting at 1504, and my holy crit is at 26%. My impression was that crit > +heal for the most part, and 1504 isn't BAD. I've put almost all my gems and enchants towards crit gain, and I find it works very well for me.

Right now, the big hole in my gear is a healing mace. If I got the mace from Kara eventually, I'd be looking at +120 healing right there. In the meantime, I'm working towards the S3 healing mace, which would be about +200 healing.

Here is my concern. I'm looking at the application threads that other holy pallies are posting. I've seen quite a few from folks that have 1700+ bonus healing, but 5% less crit than me. They claim to have experience in SSC, TK, even BT. The guild I'm in hasn't made it past Gruuls yet.

So... should I continue on my current course stacking as much crit as I can? Should I bite the bullet and sacrifice some crit for healing? Should I go against every fiber in my being and upgrade to that stupid Sha'tar rep mace, wasting about 500g (on my server anyway) on the purchase and the enchant for the 80 bonus healing I'd get? (Yeah, I'm stingy)

I also see that a lot of people are specing 43/13/5... I sacrificed some things for the imp conc aura, which I REALLY REALLY like. I can't see those 5 in the ret tree being useful at all.

ugh several questions hidden in there, have to read intently to pull them out. Make my life easier next time and make a list. :(

A.) Should you stack crit? Crit is good to have, but no longer good to "stack." Pre-BC and at the start of BC Paladins used to get 100% mana back when they crit, so the more crit they had, the more free spells they got, and the longer they could heal. Since that nerf it is no longer as beneficial to stack crit. It is actually more beneficial to stack up on mp5. I preach a balance between crit and mp5 without going overboard on either. You have nearly no mp5 and easily 6% more crit than you really need at your gear level. Your gear is pretty good for arena, but pretty terrible for raiding. PvE != PvP. That's the way Blizzard wants it, and that's the way it is now.

B.) Is your spec ok? Well if you're in arena 70% of the time and in raids 30%, sure. As I said you're set up nicely for PvP and alright for PvE.

4.) Is imp conc aura ok for raiding? There is nothing wrong with imp Conc aura in PvE, its quite useful. There are lots of silences out there, and things that give you or your party spell pushback. I have it in my build myself.

5.) What healing mace should you use? You're already exalted with Sha'tar, go get that one! The S3 mace is great for PvP, but its only good for PvE if you have the other stats to support it. As in, you have enough mp5 to not need mp5 from your mace. I have a PvE mace without mp5 on it, but I don't need it, I have , I think, about 108 mp5 while casting and that number is going to go up as I get more T6. You, however, need the mp5. Sha'tar mace for now, kara mace when you can get it.

6.) Should you drop crit for healing? No, you should drop crit for mp5. You might be able to squeak by Kara in your gear, but the second you get into big-boy raids you're going to be out of mana faster than you can imagine; and when you run out of mana, you're not going to have a way to get it back; you're going to be useless for the rest of the fight; and people will die.

I think I covered everything. Get more mp5! I think I had more mp5 at level 65 than you do at 70 in epics. PvP gear is not meant for raiding! Gear with spirit on it is useless! Ribbon of Sacrifice is probably the worst choice for trinkets in the history of healing trinkets! (It was only good when it also had mp5, but they nerfed the trinket, making it useless)

Gah, guess I shouldn't have vendored my Breastplate of Many Graces...

Thanks for the feedback, though! I'll work on some more mp5 tonight.

OK, so my cursory research so far is not looking good.

Even if I replaced every gem I have with mp5, we're looking at.... +15mp5?

If I get the breastplate from slabs again, that 26mp5. The Sha'tar rep mace is also just +heal, it has the same mp5 that I have on my current mace. From what I've read, I need >100 +mp5.

Listed, this time ( Smiley: smile )

1) The trinket that I replaced with the ribbon was lower city prayerbook. Granted, the ribbon is sorta sucky, but it's better than that. Even Essence of the Martyr is just more +heal. What should I go for?

2) I see that there is plenty of badge rewards that give good +mp5 stats, but DAMN that's a lot of badges. What else should I do to up my mp5?

Edit: Edited for less QQ

You can get enchants. Chest and wrist you can enchant mp5, but you'll want the current enchants for PvP so if you go and pick up lots more mp5 and only have 1 healing set, you're going to be hurting your PvP set. Use the LCP and the gift until you get the badges for the healing trinket. The healing trinket is one of the best in the game, mainly because it has a low cooldown. Mainly you need to replace your PvP gear with PvE gear and you'll find yourself with more mp5.

Balance is key. +heal, spellcrit, mp5. All along with int. Focus too much on any one of those, to the exclusion of others, and you gimp yourself.

That being said I sit at +1850 healing and about 25% spell crit unbuffed, my mp5 aint nothing special, it could be better, but with Spellsurge I can let it slide a little. A lot of the other pallies in raid are sitting on more +heal than me but have that 5% less spell crit. I outheal them and outlast them. How much of that is skill, how much of that is gear, who knows?

I do know that awhile back Baelnic (long time board poster) did a extremely detailed break down of MP5 vs Spell crit for mana efficiency on pallies and Spellcrit won hands down. Now dont get me wrong, the same message applies, 40% spell crit with 25 mp5 will fail in a raid.

Ahhh, that makes sense, thanks for clearing that up.

I was only getting PvP gear cause I was having such a hard time with PvE drops, so I'm not really concerned about hurting that set.

Thanks again for your input, I appreciate it.

For anyone that is curious or that has the same issue as me, here are the things I used to "fix" my mp5 issue.

I'm now up to 71mp5 (soon to be 77 when I get my bracers enchanted), and only lost 1.5% crit in the process. I also lost a chunk of stam (about 600 HP worth), and some int (about 500 MP worth).

Head - Glyph of Renewal - 7mp5

Neck - Necklace of Eternal Hope - 4mp5

Shoulder - Inscription of the Oracle (Scryer only) - 5mp5

Chest - Enchant Chest: Restore Mana Prime - 6mp5

Bracers - Enchant Bracer: Restore Mana Prime - 6mp5

Feet - Enchant Boots: Vitality - 4mp5

Ring - Ring of Convalescence (replaced my Kara ring, purple to blue QQ) - 4mp5

Ring - Band of Halos - 6mp5

All told, thats 42 more mp5, just from switching up my enchants and a little bit of gear. As for the 2 badge rewards, they are awesome to get regardless of your goal.

Not recommending everyone go overboard like I did, but here are some options at a glance.

Edit: better option for feet slot

use the vitality enchant, not the magister's kit. Vitality is 4mp5/4hp5
