Tanking Prince - am I ready?Follow

#1 Jan 15 2008 at 6:39 PM Rating: Decent
Last night, I MT'd Karazhan for the first time. Our approach was:

Attumen
Moroes
Maiden
Opera
Curator
Shade
Chess
Prince

We made it to Prince. Wiped twice due to bad infernal placement. Third time, infernals were perfect. But in the second phase, I was practically one-shot. One second I was at full health, then I was dead. I didn't have enough time to use a Healthstone, health pot, Last Stand, Shield Wall, none of that.

Here's my stats, unbuffed:

13.5k HP
14.5k armor
509 defense rating
33+% combined dodge / parry
19+% block

Here's my armory:

Any comments on gems / enchants / gear / talents would be appreciated.

But most importantly, do you feel that I am geared enough to take on Prince, and that it was possibly a mistake from the healers? Or should I just call it a lost cause and gear up some more? If so, what do you think would be viable gear choices before taking on Prince again?

You have the stats to do prince just fine. You might have missed a shield block and got a crushing blow. alternatively you could have been debuffed by losing threat (2nd on the threat table), and had only 1 hp then got aoe'd by an infernal or one shot by prince during his aoe...

but you do have the stats to tank prince.

I could've missed a shield block, but I heard that he can burn through shield block charges really quickly in the second phase and get in some crushing blows.

I didn't lose threat, I never lost threat in the fight. I know what happens with the enfeeble because I dpsed Prince last week.

I would replace the +hit gem in your helm with something else, maybe a hybrid gem with stam on it, but that can account for a yellow socket so you get the bonus. Not too much you can do about the block, but I would definitely try to get the gear that has block and shield block on it for more mitigation. Other than that, talk to your healers and see what happened.

You definitely have the stats to go all the way through Kara. During phase 2, crushes are a likely occurrence. He attacks much faster, and there's no way your 2 blocks in 6 seconds are going to be enough to avoid all crushes (which will hit in the 4-5k range). Your healers just have to be on their toes. Without knowing exactly what went on, we can only guess.

I would, however, make the following recommendations:

1. I run X-Perl, which has a cool feature called grim reaper. It tracks the last X number of heals/attacks made against you (and for everyone in your group), and whether they resulted in crits, crushes, block, parry, dodge, etc. For tanking I find this extremely helpful because it gives me something to stand on after a wipe, other than "the tank couldn't stay up". Typically it's the healers dropping the ball, rather than getting unlucky with back to back crushes for 4.5k each. It helps me to get a feel for how many crushes I take, and how often I have heals coming in. It gives me a good picture of what was happening before we wiped, that's much more user friendly than scrolling back through your combat log. If you like to run some other UI, then there is probably a similar mod out there.

2. Make sure all melee DPS is attacking from behind. A mob's next attack will happen immediately following a parry, so make sure your dps isn't ******** you over.

Your unbuffed stats are better than mine and I got through Prince last weekend. Our solution to my deaths in phase two were to assign two Healers (and not the one who kept me up during phase one so they were fairly fresh on mana) to me during that phase and with good Infernal placement we got through the fight though I did die right before the group got him down.

Been a few months since I've tanked Prince but I'm pretty sure the debuff mechanic taking you to 1hp is based on highest threat, not who has agro (highest threat player being ineligible for the debuff). Remember, ranged DPS/heals need 130% (110% for melee) of your threat to pull agro. So you could have been below another player in threat, but not enough for them to pull agro...but enough for you to be eligible for the debuff mechanic.

True story, I got the debuff once MTing Prince. The AOE shadow damage hit me...and I went to full health! Bugged, but for once bugged in my favor.

Cheers!

I agree with the above poster. Sounds like you lost aggro for a second. Then he debuffed you, you shield slam'd him and got him back. He then 1 shotted you. Even in phase 2 he really can't 1 shot a main tank (even with crushing?). I know after my Shield Wall wears I can get like 3 shotted down into the red almost.

Well it might have happened, but that just seems strange. I'd suggest everyone in your raid get Omen or that other threat meter, make sure to point out that no one can pass your threat by even 1%.

Get as many Misdirects on you as you can (spaced out so they're not wasted), salvation, trinkets etc on the dps.

Also, after sheild wall wears, pop a ironshield or stoneshield pot. 2 minutes of +2000 armor is hot. Also, try to rummage thru the library for a Mountian King book, +8000 armor will help, and has a high chance of proc'n thanks to how fast Prince throws out attacks in phase 2.
