So is this even possible? (Flight / PvP Question)Follow

Side Track:

Last week I finally achieve the most amazing ability a druid can get in outlands. I learned to fly. I spent hours soaring over Nagrand because... because I could. No goal, no objective. Halaa was claimed by the horde and a few on chat we're discussing raiding it to regain control. I play on a PvE server and most of the time Halaa is a simple affair but this time a team of horde were defending it. As usual, very coordinated. While I listen to people chat and get no where. I flew over and saw a unmanned post. I was amused to find I could claim the wyvern post while in flight form. So just for my own enjoyment I flew in a circle claiming them. I think this unnerved them because they started to have several players guard each one. A Undead Warlock began to follow me on his mount, we were both flagged.

So I start to fly off to the north, soaring higher. He followed. I dove. He followed. While I understand he really couldn't do much to me, something sparked in me at the aerial pursuit. I flew up to one of the large floating islands with him in tow. As I crested it, I dropped into cat and dashed across. With his regular mount, my cat dash would give me a slight gain in ground. I leapt over the edge and plummeted down shifting to flight as I neared the tree line. I flip my camera to see him just coming over the edge of the island. I near the ground so the fall wouldn't kill me and drop into cat hitting prowl. I stalk over to a bush under a large tree. Panning around and I watch as he nears the ground but doesn't dismount. He obviously couldn't find me, and after a minute flew off.

I started to think how exhilarating it would be to have aerial combat. Realizing druids are unique in the respect that we can fly at the drop of a hat while others dismounted get awfully friendly with the ground.

Question:

Could a Druid; with sufficient altitude, cast moonfire or another quick or near instant spell. On to another flying player and actually do damage? Could said Druid do enough damage to actually knock the other player off their mount?

Playing on a RP-PvE realm, I'm not really sure of a a lot of the PvP mechanics. Nor can I easily test them. I was just musing and wondered if it were at all possible or does Blizzard have a build in no-no while in flight.

u can cast your instants while falling...but you cant go into flight form while in combat so you would probaly meet the ground before u could change back...but if you have the skyguard cape or parchute cloak you could land with grace :)

nothing can knock a player off their flying mount while its flying. however, you can kill someone who is low enough.

If you get one of those slow-fall cloaks, and the other player is simply inactive, you could eventually kill him by repeatedly casting on him, waiting for combat to end, then flying up and casting again.

I just don't know how many players go AFK while flagged and flying.

halaa seams to have been designed to give druids the advantage. i take nodes the same way as you, altho im not sure if you do it the same as me...

a little tip for you aswell, if your being tailed by horde, fly up realy high above sunspring lake (i think thats the name... if i got it wrong... then its just the lake north of halaa) shift out of flight form and then prowl in catform, when you hit the water just start swimming away, they wont know where youve gone and will probably be swearing at their screen if youve been constantly evading them.

As a druid making that kill will be still quite hard.
As a mage I found this rather easy to execute. Hover above your flying target, dismount, cast AP trinket pom pyro (if crit >4-5k initial damage, DoT effect around 500 damage plus 40% ignite damage of the 4-5k crit), already totalling >8k damage .

While dropping past the target and still under the AP effect (+30% damage), non-crit blastwave for around 1.2k / arcane explosion 800 damage (bad spell damage coefficients). While dropping below target get that fireblast off, non crit 1.5k damage, while falling further spam ice lance for at least 300-400 damage each non crit if still not dead. Oh and then ofc do not forget to hit slow fall to gently drift towards the ground. Most of the times if executed properly it is a dead target (except some of those warriors with 15k health).

Never thought of doing it as druid, Seemed hard to execute as a druid, the lack of high powered (damage) instant casts (at most moonfire rank 12, insect swarm and a wrath made instant by NS and few moonfire rank 11 spams) combined with the need to be out of combat for 5 secs in order to safe yourself from doing the splat thing on the ground, makes it more a scare the hell out of the flying target (and take off around 5k in hitpoints) than having a chance to kill it (unless some very lucky serie of crits).

Still it might be fun to try, even if you are too late to switch to flight form, cat form does mitigate some serious fall damage too. Hmmm I might let you know after the weekend, if I can find a flagged flying target a guinea pig.

Another way to knock them off as a mage is PoM polymorph, that automatically dismounts them, then just throw a fireblast so they cant get healed and watch them go splat.

I have never been able to dismount a foe with an assault from the air. However, I have buffed and healed then shifted back to Flight form before the ground gets a chance to say "hello".

Hala has also been my testing ground for this. I am looking forward to trying some BearBombs once I respec Feral and get Epic FF.

Cheers!

With enough height, I guess it would be possible to moonfire and get out of combat fast enough, but it is impossible to cast anything other than instants while in the air. I suppose you could Moonfire+NS/Wrath. And no, you can not dismount someone in the air, unless they become dazed or die, in both cases they fall to the ground (I miss when they didn't fall if they died so they had to spirit rez...those were the days).

I've actually been hoping Blizzard would implement some kind of aerial assaults, where we could attack from our mounts. Obviously this would hurt the melee most of all, but it would be pretty sweet having another plane to move around in. Actually, I don't think it would hurt the melee as much, it would just mean they would have to work harder, but let's face it, they don't work hard enough anyway with crip/spamstring (feral druids I feel bad for you if this does happen). I got extremely excited the first time I could fly around, and I really hope they do this in WotLK. It could be a huge success (and also a huge failure).

You know, I'm kind of curious to see what would happen if you NS and then rooted someone who was flying. It would probably fail, but it'd be amusing if roots grew up all the way from the ground and grabbed them.

Always amuses me how roots scale in size. I rooted something the other day (I think it was a Mor'ag Forge Demon or whatever those things are called out at Honor Point) and the roots were huge. It was like this big, evil-looking pulsing mass.

Oh well, I'll never know, since I'm not switching to resto!
