#1 Jan 14 2008 at 6:56 PM Rating: Default
Im staying ret to 70 then respecing prot. My plan is too start collecting good tank gear from quests around level 67-70 from nagrand to netherstorm and shadowmoon. Im trying to plan ahead and make lists i was wondering if someone could post me some good gear from quests and what quests i get it from. Thanks.

I have collected this info alrerady Breastplate of the warbringer from altrius quests in nagrand or durotans battle harness from Cpt Skarloc in durnholde, Junior technician grade 3 bracers, Terroks nightmaceor Crystalline Kopesh, sheild of the void pandemonius mana tombs.

I dont have any of this but i have all 70 friends irl and it will be virtually effortless to obtrain this. Plz post any other gear.

p.s. Horde Pally

You know, I do wish someone would post an FAQ sticky post at the top of the pally forum that went into all the detail of what to get, in addition to lots of info on how to play a pally.

That sure would be nice, if at the top of the pally forum, there was an FAQ POST, that went into that.

The most important thing you need to know is that if you're going prot there will be NO swithing. If you add swithing to the lavender armor set people get the wrong impression, you know?

Oh and you may want to try to correct that lisp, it's not helping matters any either.

Quick thought:
=========================================================================
First off I would keep any ret or even a holy set just in the event you would like to switch back or to holy or gear that is good enough, ie blues and purps and keep an updated set as you come across them, sucks when you quests are done and you dont have access to them, (at least thats my opinion)
============================================================================
EDIT 2 : another item, when I first switched, I started to get greens from the AH that were mostly "of the champion" usually have great stam, armour, + DEFENSE, and strength. THis is fairly easy and cheap, piece here and there to get you up to where you can do some normal five mans, group quests and get a feel for the spankadin. Rings and necklaces, one handed fast wep and nice shields can all be had this route and make sure to look at the FAQ again for spec, there are certain talents some may think are good, like dev aura, but are not. You definitely will need the special talents like def and parry to spank and protect.
===============================================================================
There was a link as I was prot from 40-66 then ret to finish off 70. I decided to revert back to prot and have been gearing up since. A link that I believe jack provides in his FAQ section has a site called www.maintankadin.com

Here is a great gear list to get you started as a tank to reach both 490 for uncrittability as well as the necessary avoidance for uncrushability.

http://failsafedesign.com/maintankadin/viewtopic.php?t=4844

(cant seem to get the click links, but you can copy and past, sorry, tried the url option didnt work)

EDIT: Apparently it works when posted!

Most of the gear are quests and hopefully you haven't done them and sold the loot, but there are adequate replacements. This is to get you geared up for raids, and good for 5 mans too. For 5 mans you will have more spell damage type gear as opposed to raids.

I would also recommend selling your soul to offer to tank to learn the nuances of tanking as its not just running in and trying to keep hitting, using your god given tankadin talents is crucial and more importantly your spec.

Jack outlines this in great detail, as I am still gearing up I keep a 0/51/10 spec as opposed to the traditional 49/12 spec due to reckoning which still works well for 5 mans and all the PVE I am still doing while I gear up.

Check out his link :

http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/class.html?wclass=2;mid=118927665288483321;num=23;page=1

couple of key items:

Quote:
2.4.2 What kind of gear does an end-game Tanking Paladin look for?

An end-game tanking paladin tries to go for the following gear (all Plate).

* A spell damage/healing bonus of at least 200.
* 490 Defense (for reaching uncrittable status).
* 102.4% avoidance (about 52.4% of that must come from gear/talents).
* As much stamina and Armor as possible.

These stats will help ensure your ability to keep threat and to take a beating.

and using holy shield up at all times, throw down a consecration once in awhile and my personal fav seal of vengeance is great for tanking to hold and maintain threat: from jacks FAQ as well:

Quote:
Seal of Vengeance (SoV) (Alliance only)
-Gives every melee attack a chance to cause X holy damage over 12 seconds. This can stack up to 5 times.
-Judgement: Deals X amount of holy damage per application of Seal of Vengeance.
-This is a very useful tool for tanking. It allows the Paladin to bring a nice amount of threat towards himself. It also allows the Paladin to hit multiple mobs, and keep threat coming towards him from those he has already hit. The judgement is useful if the Paladin loses aggro, instantly dealing a great amount of holy damage, while also keeping the DoT on the enemy, generating even more threat.

I know you didnt ask for all of that, but the maintankadin site and jacks FAQ are great for further learning on what gear and stats to choose if you cant get something on the list or more to educate yourself and to at least get the minimum defense and avoidance stats. There is also a great sticky here that talks bout mitigation and defense as you delve deeper into the dark corner or protection spankadin.

Even better than the FAQ is Thels' sticky for prot gear. It's a little out-dated, but not by much and is still a good guideline for grabbing gear at different stages.

EDIT 2:

Well since I am editing so much here it is:

lol

EDIT 3: one more cant hurt:

I went through much of thels post which is great, but the maintankadin site gives the name of the quest and what to enchant with and such detailing step by piece breakdown which has been so great. Simply switching ret to prot isnt going to cut it, itll work with current gear for some PVP but if you get your hands on some of the green cheap or fairly cheap even mid 60s gear is ok of the champion it will be a good stepping stone toward working towards the blues then finally onto the purples when you are ready.

EDIT 4 - IF YOU SCROLL DOWN FURTHER THELS STICKY DOES GET DOWN TO THE NITTY GRITTY WHICH DOES INCLUDE MUCH OF WHAT I POSTED BELOW FROM THE MAINTANKADIN SITE. IT also gives you items to upgrade as you progress. great sticky I have also enjoyed and learned from.

Yargh I cant stop posting, close subject for me LOL:

If you dont go to the link here is the itemization from the site I spoke of earlier:

Its not, like the OP says, the end all gear, its to get you to get that gear:

From maintankadin website:

Does your guild need a new tank in Kara and you want to become uncrushable as quickly as possible? Do you just hate leaving anything to chance? Then Eanin's Failsafe Uncrushability Guide is for you. This guide is designed to get any level 70 tank to uncrushable or near uncrushable status as soon as possible.

It's designed so that you aren't dependent on any lucky drops or any reputations above revered. Using just this method, you can get your paladin to uncrushable status within a week with no luck at all.

My goal in all of this is to provide a baseline for future raiding, not your final gear set. Hence, with the exception of the weapon enchant, all enchantment choices are based on survivability or avoidance. Stack avoidance until you are uncrushable then go for survivability.

or

(I highly recommend major spellpower as you will not be getting a new weapon for a long, long time)

Shield:
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=31200 - Shield of the Wayward Footman (world drop)
or
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=31491 - Netherwing Defender's Shield (quest: http://www.wowhead.com/?item=31491 - don't get the Protector's shield; you'll regret it later)

(I highly recommend the Wayward shield. Start looking for it on the AH early; put an alt in Org and check every day. You can start using it at 65, so start looking then or even earlier. It is far and away the best shield for uncrushability.)

Enchant:
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=28282 - Major Stamina
or
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=22540 - Shield Block

Libram
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29388 - Libram of Repentance (15 badges)

There's four more items that you may find useful. Remember, uncrushability isn't like other stats. It's just as useful to be uncrushable buffed as unbuffed (you can't, after all, become more uncrushable by being buffed). These can put you over the top:

http://www.wowhead.com/?item=22831 - Elixir of Major Agility
or
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=28104 - Elixir of Mastery
or
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=22851 - Flask of Fortification
and
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=27659 - Warp Burger

How do you know when you've hit uncrushable? Easy! Assuming you have 490 defense, the parry, dodge and block values on your character sheet need to add up to 56.47% (if you have the libram) or 61.8% (if you don't). Give yourself 0.04% bonus for each point of defense you have above 490.

Really do your best to mix and match, and try to build in as much survival as you can without losing your uncrushability. Remember also that a Grace of Air totem gives you 3% dodge, so don't be afraid to ask for it. With the right mix of gear and consumables, it's even possible to become uncrushable without the Libram, which you can get after one Kara clear anyway.

I hope people find this helpful. I used the thinking in this guide to become uncrushable in Kara within 9 days of reaching 70 and it went extremely well. If anyone notices any ommissions, please let me know.

I was told a Tankadin's gear will be similar to a Prot warrior's gear. If you can't get much info from the Pally forums or if the info is not to your liking, you can always pop by the warrior forums and check on the list that is stickied.

But then again, I've also heard that a tankadin's gear differs from a prot warrior because you will also need some spell damage and what not.

You can get all the spell damage you need from a weapon + enchant. Other than that, prot pallies go for pretty much the same gear as prot warriors do.

Agreed, from what I understand, spell damage is more poignant in 5 mans and other is more for raiding. So prot warrior, just like alot of the ret gear is more dps warrior gear str agil stam.

Sorta, you make a blanket statement like that and you have a bunch of pallies with a ton of Str on their gear and itemizing for block value :-/

True, but can I hide behind this

I wrote:

as a qualification?

Also, for those who might not know what Celcio's talking about, shield block value is good for warriors because it helps increase their threat, and bad for pallies because it doesn't. Which you really should know, because you did your research right? :P

Maybe I should just refer wannabe tanks to the actual tanks from now on...but then it'll take me even longer to pad my post count into respectability.

If you are referring to the list I posted, that is a quick simple guide, read the intro prior to the list. Its a fairly quick and painless way to get geared up and isnt the end all be all. Most are greens and blues to achieve uncrittability - 490 defense, and uncrushability - 102.4% avoidance as quickly as possible. More of a gear progression.

Also view the sticky I mentioned as well, Jack mentioned it too, that goes down a great list of items that gets more into detail of epics and such.

Just remember, most are recommended, but sometimes other items will be obtained in lieu of what is recommended to achieve your goals. For example, one may have less block or dodge and wish to swap it out to achieve their goals. I havent fully reviewed Thels sticky but your shield may be on there...My response was to the OP who is looking to begin the journey of upgrading.
