Does Gladiator's Aegis (S1) offer anything for a Prot spec?Follow

As my friend and I approach 70 we decided to take a break at 69 to PvP for our weapon/armor sets. He is going for his Holy set and I am focused on obtaining Gladiator's Aegis since I read it is used by Prot Paladins. However, as I look over it the only thing I can see this is good for is farming/questing since it has no +def or am I wrong? Can this gear be used in 70 5-mans (non-heroic) to help farm for more +def gear?

I feel I know my answer already but would like some insight from others who might also own the set.

If you grind for anything PvP related, go for the spell damage mace. It was one of the best Paladin tanking weapons in the game until S2 and S3 came out.

The shield is good if you already have the other stats, but not so good for starting out with when you are trying to reach uncrittable and uncrushable.

PvP sets, with the possible exception of the weapon, should not be used in PvE. Prot sets lack defense (you don't need to worry about defense in PvP_ and holy sets lack decent amount of Mp5. Both sets include resilience, which is near useless in PvE. Due to an item's ilevel (item level), it can only have so many stat points, so when you have resilience, you lack something else.

QFMFT

The PvP mace is sexy for Prot pallies in PvE, thats about it. The rest is just wearing purples for the sake of purples at the expense of being an actual pve tank.

the Ret Set has no Res, acceptable for PvE DPS. in actuality, most DPS classes can use the S1 as a very good starter DPS set despite the res. res may be a wasted stat, but they are still epic, which means they have abnormally high stats/item lvl. if you could somehow just delete the Res, they would still make pretty damn good Blues. better then most dungeon drops.

avoid the mallet, i hear its too slow for a tankadin. dont let the SD seduce you. if your going to pvp for a bit, then check the AH for a Crystal forge Sword when ever you take a brake from it and your hearth is up.

1.6 is too slow??? How fast do you want to swing??

I'm going to break from the pack and say.... yes. For 5-mans and heroics, it is certainly going to get you going in the right direction, where what matters is how much you're getting crit. Nothing in a 5-man can crush, so hitting uncrushable isn't as important.

As for the shield itself, it has a lot of stamina, a lot of armor, and a good amount of block value. It also will push you towards uncrittable if you need that.

It's not something you'll want to use forever, but I used one for about 2 weeks until I got the shield off of Nightbane. You may want to even keep it around for when you get to Hydross. It will help against the adds if you gear up in resist gear and start dropping below 490 Defense.

Just thinking. Will the added resilience from Gladiator's Aegis allow you to be uncrittable? As mobs in heroics can't crush.

actually yes. ret in s1 gear... gonna do dps well below other epic'd dps... its not really the best mix ot stats... i'll put the extra work in to get gear that'll be useful rather than wearing purples to look 'epic'

Yeah, I defiantly am going for that 1H spell damage mace. The reason I stared all this was I noticed it was a bit harder to quest/farm due to a lack of spell dmg so in the thought the PvP set could fill the gap and maybe could be extended into 5-mans. But I also don't want to belittle my current +def gear which is at a good start of 458.

a guildie grinded Merciless Gladiator's Shield Wall. he is already uncrushable. this has more armor and block by far than anything else that he had available to him.

I know a guildie warrior who has it. As far as armor and raw shield block, it's as good as/better than the shield from Gruul. It doesn't have the other stats, but it's still a good shield if you can't get better.
