I just got my earth elemental totem yesterday and was wondering, due to it's 20 minute cooldown, when is a good time to use it? I was thinking just for boss fights?

Thoughts?

I used to save all my cooldowns for emergencys until I realised I was never using them ! Now I use em as often as possible.

I guess it really depends on what your doing, PvP, instance, questing or grinding.

I used my earthy elemental in EotS to force the horde back from the flag spawn site and later to stop a rogue from killing me when I was the last defender of the ruins.

If you know the instance and how long it takes to get to bosses you could save it for them or a bad pull to even up the odds.

Its good for doing the odd 2 man quest solo, or vs a large group when you just need to kill 1 mob for the drop and the rest are just guards.

Its also great when your grinding and some bugger tries to off you just when you've finished using 4 scrolls and 2 potions for an hour long session!

I guess what I'm saying is there will always be a good time to use it and always a time when you need it and its on cooldown :P

The earth elemental is actually a decent tank for Galv if you do AV with few tanks.

I seldom use earth elemental for PVP, I'd rather save the earth totem slot for tremor or earthbind. Fire elemental is the best a Shaman can have for PVP, I noticed in mass pvp a fire elem can really mess up the opposing team.

The only times I use earth elem is during instances when the tank died during a pull. Drop earth elem & hope your dps can kill off the mobs fast enough. Set a macro to inform the healer to start healing it too(if you're not resto).

Doesn't the earth elemental do earthbind too? :X I thought it was basically stoneclaw + earthbind in one. I'm usually too busy to really pay attention because I'm freaking out cause I use it for emergencies.

Earth Elemental uses a AoE taunt effect that generates a high amount of threat.

I use it as an O @#$^ button mostly. When something goes wrong, place it and run your @$$ off.

IT doesn't have an earthbind effect, but is still very useful.

I mainly use it to take on elites. Don't think you can take on Netherstorm, Nagrand, or SMV elites with it though. You can down a few elites in nagrand, but not biggies like Durn, Chowar, etc. :).

Nope, unfortunately Earth Elemental is JUST a "tank". Think of it like a Void Walker you can't control and is always on aggressive. For most PvP aspects the Earth Elemental is nothing more than a "pest" at best. Its AoE Taunt is a moot point and its dmg negligible and considering it’s tied to its totem so to speak...it lacks range, thus avoidable.

Earth Elementals shine in PvE and especially soloing. While it can take a hit respectably, I wouldn't go so far to say it’s an alternative instance tank in a pinch. Due to its autonomous nature it lacks reliability…not a quality you want in something protecting you. But, it can still be used as a OS button when things get hairy, because nothing good can come from a elite mob/boss pounding on your healer (which could be you infact), and offering a alternative punching to said enemy is “better”. But, if/when I throw a Earth Elem out, I never think “phew…good thing we’ve got another tank on the field”, its more like,”That might buy us 5 seconds…I hope”.

When soloing, Earth Elem’s are a great OS button. Typically, when soloing you don’t tend to intentionally farm elite mobs or things WAY outta hand that you couldn’t typically take on yourself. But, in the event when you do get overwhelms (typically over run with links and adds), Earth elem does its job perfectly, taking off everything that was bugging you, and takes hits like a champ. Downside is, you better not get overwhelmed again for another 20mins, which IMO the 20min CD is really isn’t nessasary from Bliz, not in comparison to other pets, not to mention the lack of control hinders elementals overall effectiveness.

My favorite Elem by far for PvP is the Fire elem. AoE Fire Novas and respectable dmg can cause havoc quick. I tend to ghost wolf quietly into a group of ppl in a BG, drop a fire elem and get the heck to safety! Only thing that can stop its rampage would be a lock for the most part, but a few fire nova’s later can soften up the most armored of druids, warriors and pallys…which makes it easy for your team to clean up, or for you to go back and pick off the weak.
