wimpy mageFollow

Help me with my mage. Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I'm a level 53 blood elf horde mage, and she's wimpy. I'm in Un'Goro Crater right now fighting creatures level 51-53 and I'm having to eat and drink after every kill. I went to the auction house, upgraded my armour, but still didn't help. Or maybe I'm just not playing her right. Mana and heath drain too fast while killing. Give me some tips on how to become a better mage, thanks.

Post your armory link and your normal spell rotation, and we'll help as we can. ;-)

I'm not sure on how to post the armory link. But my total armor without buffs is 730.

strength=38
agility=66
stamina=142
intellect=181
spirit=181
armor=730

My health is 2307 and mana 3546 (without any buffs on). Fire, arcane, nature, frost, and shadow resistance all show as "poor" (15).

Jaedyn level 53 blood elf mage. Normal spell rotation is fireball, frost nova, fire blast, arcane missiles. I train every 2 levels and trained at level 52.

Here s your build:

http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/mage/talents.html?2552550000000110000000054023010000000000000000200000000000000000000

The problem is that you picked a lot of talents are not so good for questing/soloing.

At 53 I would recommend this (assuming you like fire):

http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/mage/talents.html?0000000000000000000000051521201200133105312510000000000000000000000

You could also drop a few points and put it into elemental precision for less resists as well.

I would also suggest a good read of the FAQ. It offers some good advice, build samples, and is actually fun to read (no BS writing style).

Then, work on your spell rotation. If you pick Fire, then try something like:

1) Pyro (from max range)
2) Frostbolt to slow mob (Rank 1 - for fast cast time)
3) Fireball
4) Fireball or Fire Blast (depending on how close mob is)
5) Frost Nova
6) Back up
7) Fireball

That should kill a mob, and leave you with plenty of mana.

Ok so it's more the talent points then anything then. Someone told me an arcane blood elf mage is the strongest type of mage, is this true? Is there an edge that blood elfs have with arcane? I do like fire but ultimately may not be as strong? I'm not sure what route I should go with that.

My understanding is that an Arcane Mage will be able to put out the most DPS, but will run out of mana very very fast (your problem in your original post).

NOTE - I've never tried playing an Arcane Mage, so I have no idea how true this is. Just what I've read on this message board :)

For low spell damage casters, 40/21/0 is the best build until you get to 600-700 spell damage, unbuffed. See the sticky for the build.

you definitely need to find some gear with spell damage. at that level, i was wearing a few blues from instance & a bunch of "fiery wrath" gear. 2- or 3- shotting mobs was typical.

here's how i kill stuff:
pyro at max range
fireball
~scorch (if most is slow or has lots of health)
Rank 1 frost nova
strafe out of melee range
fireball
~scorch (sometimes need 1-2 to finish the job... not usually, though)

i'm specced deep fire with enough frost to AoE effectively. tried more frost, and found incredible mana-efficiency but low burst damage and no spell variety (frostbolt spam only). i also tinkered with deep arcane, but i missed the burst damage of fire and the AoE abilities of frost. at 70, i'll likely try arcane builds again... i think arcane missiles has a great animation.

The spec makes absolutely no difference per race.

I agree with Anobix. I recently followed his advice on my build and I've noticed a huge difference.
Personally speaking I'd dump the arcane points, and go with deep fire spec as suggested. You will use far less mana. Plus you will gain a lot more damage.
You can choose frost if you like, but I prefer fire for the quick damage infliction.I was in Un Goro a few levels ago, and was only stopping after every 3(ish) kills

Take a look at my build via my sig picture.

I usually go with some thing like:
Pyro/Fireball/Fireball/Fire blast
if the mob is still alive I might hit it with Dragon's breath or similar.

Keep an eye on the health level of the mob when it's nearly dead, and try and use a spell which will remove the remainder without wasting mana (ie scorch instead of fire blast)

I was in Un'Goro last night and everything Reknotz said is dead on, the same cast sequence I use(d). I was able to down 3 of the bugs before drinking. Plus don't forget to evocate, then you can get 5-6 of the things before a real drink is necessary. The key for me was to have combustion up, which in some rare cases allowed for two shot kills.

Un'Goro seems like a great place to level in the 50's. No shortage of mobs or quests, with some elites to make things interesting. I killed three of the 52 elite stego-something or others and each was worth 1050xp (with Blue XP bar)! Of course, I was drinking/eating immediately after those. I was also eaten by the Tyrano-mage chomper (55 elite) that was running around in the same place. Dangerous but fun! Plenty of high dollar herbs & minerals as well.

Jae...u might wanna re-consider some of your gear too, like wearing stuff that boosts Spell Damage, and Crit Rating, and lose that level 23 sword that dont help at all...also mana regen trinks and gear would also be helpful...imho.
#14 Jan 16 2008 at 2:48 AM Rating: Decent
Also, you don't need that cape.- agility is almost completely useless to you, or not near as useful as 1/4 intellect or spell damage would be in the same slot. Stay away from stuff with strength and agility on it, focus on gear with int/+dam
#15 Jan 16 2008 at 9:46 AM Rating: Decent
Yeah I agree, level 23 sword has got to go, lol. Headed to AH....

Thanks so much for the info. I switched my talents to fire, just like u recommended, it's working much better as a fire mage! Now I ROAST 'EM!! lol

You could give up some of the Spirit points for Int.
