Another "help me with my gear"Follow

#1 Jan 13 2008 at 11:19 PM Rating: Decent
Well, i NEVER thought i'd be posting this kind of post, but here goes.

short background first. I lvled up prot, then joined a raiding guild and went holy for guilds nessesity. Now i'm in a new guild just breaking into raiding, and i'll be their main tank.

I'm looking for suitable replacements for my shoulders, gloves, a ring and trinket, that can squeeze out 12 more defense. I'm reluctant to give up high armor/stam for lower blues with defense. So i might need persuading.

here is my armory link.

http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Sen%27jin&n=Sodie

please don't suggest quest earned stuff, i've probably had it and either sold/DE'd it.

I need to be uncrittable so i can run my guildies thru heroics to gear them up.

I know people will comment on abunch of my "healing" gear, but keep in mind, transition from raiding holy to prot. I do want to keep some of it so i have spell damage, thanks to that patch awhile ago.

also take a look at my talent tree and feel free to make suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

Off the top of my head so... take it for what it's worth.

Shoulderguards of the Bold (from Murmur I think) (with aldor Dodge/etc shoulder enchant)
Figurine of the Colossus from last boss in SH
I think there's a ring that drops in Arc.
Gloves? Dunno, I used the quest rewards one :(

Prot build: wowhead

feel free to place the last 5 in what you want. reduced spell damage PoJ, better melee ability precision, faster judgements, reduced BoP cooldown (its a take or leave, id leave but thats just me) ect...

I wouldn't use Imp HoJ or the point in Imp Concen aura. They wont help as much for a MT as they do in pvp. ardent defender is very good for a tank, so is combat exp.

More HPs IMO, im lv66 and have as many HPs as you... all though im also not as close to uncrushable as you are, but most prot pallys i see at least have 13-15k HPs.

Keeping some healy gear for spell damage is not a good idea at all. Get a spell damage weapon and enchant that, you'll be good for spell damage until you start getting your Justicar Armor pieces. Crystalforged Sword or Continuum Blade would be best.

Your gems are all screwy too. AP is a BIG no no. We don't need it. It has extremely little to do with our damage and especially little to do with our threat. Replace those gems with Stam/Def gems.

The talents linked by Kill are spot on. I suggest Improved Judgement and Pursuit of Justice for the last 5 points, at the very least Imp Judgement. Couple of keys differences in your build to that one are Combat Expertise (no way you should be passing up 10% more stamina, particularly if you're going to be MT), Ardent Defender, Spell Warding. Drop Seal of Command, it does a tank 0 good. And Improved Ret Aura is nice, but I for one can't justify spending that many talents in the Ret tree for Ret Aura to do 50% more damage. It is a nice boost in our threat, but not THAT good.

Also, work towards Libram of Repentance ASAP (Heroic Badge reward). That's, if I remember correctly, 5.4% avoidance toward uncrushable right there. For the rest, look at Thel's sticky, there is a gear list for getting uncrushable and will be a great list for you to get ideas and work towards. Items you specifically asked about though: Figurine of the Colossus (Shattered Halls), Ring of the Silver Hand (Steamvaults), and either the Righteous or Bold shoulders and gloves would be a great place to start.

EDIT: few typos.

I'm not much on the gear as I just posted a "how about my gear" thread not to long ago... and I'm only 66, but the talents... Killzon has it down.

I would suggest Imp Judge, as we use it often.

well, i've gotten some diff gear, gem and redid my talents, but i'm not sure if the armory is showng the changes yet (since armory is firewalled from work).

how do i find out if i'm uncrushable? the guide says arrowing over your defense will show you your miss rate, then add 5% to it. But when i arrow over it, it never mentions miss.

Doesn't appear to have updated yet. I still see AP in your helm.

It doesn't say "miss rate" or something like that, it says, "Decreases chance to be hit and critically hit by X%." That's the number you want to add for miss chance. There's a macro, which sadly I don't remember right off hand, you can use to determine your total avoidance, or use an addon like TankPoints to do the job. If you want to add it yourself it's 5% + the number mentioned in your Defense + Dodge/Parry/Block percentages. Don't forget to use Holy Shield before determining this value should you find be using an addon, or just add in 30% to whatever total you get (and another 5.4% once you get the Libram).

well, did some gear upgrading. Still working on some replacements (rings, libram and trinkets). Have a few questions:

I have 490+ def, working on my avoidance:

On my belt, should i sacrifice the red +8 parry rating and the +3 parry socket bonus for 8 more def?

which is more avoidance 8 def or 11 parry?

2nd, which enchant is better on gloves for aviodance? +15 str (block) or +15 agi?

Option C, +2% threat to gloves.

+Spell damage is better for your gloves until you are at like 400 something spell damage, then the +threat enchant is better.

well, at the moment i'm not having any issues with holding agro, due to my healer rings and shoulders. I'm working more at getting uncrushable.

#12 Jan 20 2008 at 9:13 PM Rating: Good
Well to get uncrushable you are going to have to replace those items, then that spell damage is gone. Enchant your gloves with Sp damage now to make up for it.

Or if you ask me get a Heavy Knothide Armor Kit for your gloves instead (+10 Stamina). If you said you were having trouble holding aggro, I'd recommend the SD, but if you're fine, get the extra health. Whatever you do Str or Agi would be a waste.
