Okay.... so this is a question of 'can pally's tank this'... There is a friend of mine that needed a tank last night for the Ring of Blood. No sweat, I think to myself... I'll help out for a few minutes. Well, we made it to the last guy with no deaths. The group composition was: Me, pally tank, holy priest, hunter, rogue (70), dps warrior.

On the last boss, I get killed within 20 seconds of the fight starting. I look at my combat log and I got hit with a 3500 chain lighting and immediately thereafter with a 1200 frost shock, then I die and lose 10 percent durability. We tried it for the better part of an hour, wiping 6 or 7 times. Then we gave up. Even at the end, we had a 70 mage helping from the sidelines and a 70 boomkin as well. The story was the same. While I was tanking him, everyone could dps, but when I die, then he runs willy nilly around hacking people to little bits.

I read on the forum for the quest that warriors were using spell reflect on the chain lighting. So, is that just a fight where druids can do it (insane amounts of stam) and warriors (spell reflect), but not Pallies?

I dejectedly ran back to Terebor (or whatever the city name is there in Nagrand) and someone needed help with Durn. They needed a healer... so I tossed on my healing gear and healed him till Durn was at 25%... but went oom. I guess you need to be holy spec to heal through the amount of damage that guy does... I had blessing of light on the tank and was spamming flash of light until he'd get to < 50%, then big heal, then flash of light spam, then, 0 mana, lay on hands...

Ah, well... I hearthed... feel wholely inadequate. :-(

I tanked it yesterday without any issues once the group understood that the last boss reincarnates so got to kill him twice. I am 70 in full dungeon/quest blues, 0/46/15 tanking spec. So it can be done. =)

Hate to break it to you but yes, Paladins can indeed tank that quest, and no we don't need Heroic gear or anything like that to do it. I tanked it at 68 I think. Took a couple tries, but my group was able to pull it off.

And yes, spec plays more and more into what you can and can't do the higher level you get. You could get away with healing for Durn if he was a 60 elite in the "old world", but BC content, not unless you've got a really nice healing set are you gonna manage.

Ring of Blood isn't the easiest thing to tank at mid 60s. I think both times I've done it (haven't done it on hunter yet) I've had level 70 assistance. I know when I healed as a paladin it was a real challenge, so don't feel bad for it being rough to tank. On top of it, you probably don't have the full mitigation and defense gear yet that you will have in the future. As I said, don't feel bad. Try to see if you can make some level 70 friends that will come help you, or see if you can get an extra healer or two that aren't in your 5-man group. I remember that fight taking everything I had as a healer, so you taking a ton of damage doesn't surprise me. I think it would be the same result whether you were warrior, druid, or paladin. /comfort

So... do you think that it was the healer not healing enough, as most all the damage I was taking would be unmitigatable (magic damage vs physical damage) or does your defense contribute to spell hit/crit. I thought that was a completely separate table.

My stats now:

393 Defense
10.36 dodge
12.12 parry
7.12 block
9712 armor
8771 health (over 9100 with fort)
I regemmed and respecced to a 0/47/12 spec.

You can't do much about magic damage other than heal through it. It probably was a combination of you and your healer, I just didn't want you to beat yourself up about it. Having a second healer really really helps.

Um....you mentioned that you took 3500, then 1200 damage before you died. That is a total of 4700.

That is about 50% of your health.

I would've talked to the healer, and made sure that he kept your health topped off. Then, you could've taken that damage, and lived.

As a healer, that's what I would've done.

Seems like a similar situation to Bael'gar in BRD. Hits can take 50% of tanks' health...

The only time a tank's health will be below 80% is if I'm busy healing someone else. If a boss can hit that hard, then the DPS should be using pots to keep themselves alive while healer takes care of tank.

Most DPS have their "Oh Crap" buttons to keep them from dying (i.e. feign death, vanish, ice block), so they should be ok to wait a bit longer for a heal.

Just my thoughts.

for the lvl you get Ring of Blood, that quest chain is exeptionally hard. you need a damn near perfect set up to get it done with a lvl 65 group. when i went through, we had 2 70's on the side lines helping, and got a epic'd warrior from the local leet guild to help. granted he wasnt prot spec, and we wiped a few times still. even with all that help it was still a giant pain. that was with a pally healer and me (was the tank) both healing.

the last few bosses are no joke. its worth it though. its a ton of gold and exp. now that i think about it though, i should have saved it for lvl 70 so i could get even more gold out of it.

you should make nearly a full lvl if you did it all at 65 though.

Just did that last night as well. We had a number of 70's though, one was in bear form (not sure if they were spec'd for tanking though.

Between me (66 prot pally) a 70 fury warrior and the 70 druid bear we killed him twice. Someone forgot to turn in after the 5th fight.

To be honest, it sounds like a healing problem. 10-20sec is plenty to keep you toped off. When I took shots at the start he would quickly get me below 50% health, but there didnt seem to be problems keeping me toped off after his burst.

The 70 lock & mage took hate and died on the 1st run, second run no one died.

Yes, pally can tank this but you need a good group or a TON of extra's.

*cough* spell warding would have made it a 4800 points of damage instead of 5K... I think I'd still have died. ;-)*cough*... since I'm leveling, I'm using reckoning still as well. I hear that once you hit 70, reckoning is not the best talent for a tank to have...

It was actually in reference to your unmitigatable comment :-) HEY! 4% is still mitigation!

But yeah, it's entirely possible it was your healer. Maybe he was trying to get the big heals off and the healing just wasn't coming soon enough? /shrug

Spec looks good for Lv68, at least IMO. I'm not spec'd the exact same, but very close (I took spell warding & 1-hd weapon specialization). That spec looks much better than most of what I see pre-70 for tanking.

I like the gear too... stam over anything else. Ran UB with 10,200 HPs, very little STR & about the same +spell damage as you. Keep in mind I'm Lv66. We had a 70 Fury Warrior that didn't pull hate. He was trying to do max damage for a raid assesment. Plus a Rouge that always attacked the non-skull mob >.> not sure why, but he never pulled hate either so I didn't complain. Very smooth run.

Personaly, for a general tankadin build +stam & ardent defender seems to be huge (not including the given talents; HS, anything +stam, ect...).

Ring of Blood:
Again, I seemed to tank him just fine with a good healer & after the DPS toned it down a notch (70 kara geared mage & lock). Was hectic, don't get me wrong. I'd love to see a group of 65s do that quest lol. They would need major investments in gear and play extreamly well together. Not going to happen with a 65 PUG >.> doesn't matter who's tanking.

For whatever its worth, I did this quest at L70 when a guildie asked for help with it. I was still Ret specced at the time and we had a L70 Holy Pally from our guild healing, and our L70 Warrior Tank in half purples from pvp tanking. The rest of our 5-man were all L70 also, and there was another group that came along just before we got to the last boss but I don't remember their set-up.

We had no problem up to the last boss, and no problem up to his re-spawn. We could not take him down though. The other group offered to help us if we helped them, so we did and took him down easily. The point is, that last boss is real hard and I really don't see a 5-man under 70 doing him. But, I've been wrong before.

The rewards from the quest at L70 are outrageous. I don't remember the exact amount, but it was over 100g and I sold all of the health pots on the AH.

healer was the problem. i tanked this for a couple guildies as Ret spec. had a full group 65-68 incl pally healer and also a 70 priest on the side. the boss charges the casters often which changes the healers target, whereas the tank still needs constant spam heals.

2 healers was the key.
