Fireguard versus The Sun EaterFollow

I'm currently using Fireguard as my tanking weapon for the +hit, stamina, and hope that I'll get it upgraded given enough nether. My defense is at 492, avoidance just a hair under 31%, so I'm not hurting for the extra defense found on most tanking weps.

My question is this: as a casual gamer in a guild focused on Kara, is it worth the effort to find a group for Heroic Mech just to get The Sun Eater? The extra dodge looks great for avoidance, but I'm wondering if it's worth the effort when there are other great pieces waiting in Kara - which is where I'll be more likely to find a group.

Armory link for my stats in case it makes a difference.

Just wondering what you all think.

Thanks,
Jorge

With heroic mech being one of the easier Heroic instances, the instance should go fairly quickly, the badges are nice, and there's the chance of getting the sun eater.

You might as well give it a shot while you aren't in kara.

Yeah, I pretty much figured that. Now I just have to convince some folks to go run this with me instead of waiting in Deadwind for a Kara group :)

Well last night I was able to fit in a heroic Bot run before going to kara, same with one of the shammies in our guild.

And I have noticed that my warrior is the most unlucky SoB ever in the game...

When I didn't care about tanking, first run of kara, 4 tanking items drop from 3 bosses.

Now I care about tanking, only piece that has dropped was the belt from Moroes, which is the piece that made me want to start tanking >.>

Coulda had my T4 tanking gloves but some greedy druid that already had 3 drops took the token Smiley: frown

Ouch. Hopefully Karma will catch up with him and reward him with all cloth the next time he runs anything :)

I was working on that sword too from Mech but by the time I got around to getting a group for it I had already gotten Kings Def. from Chess out of Kara.

Speaking of Kara drops, We had one run where nothing but tank gear dropped. Another week nothing but caster gear, and then last week a lot of Druid leather items. Just hang in there, eventually more tanking gear will drop.

We've seen the hunter/lock token drop of Curator about 3-4 times now, none of the others yet.
#7REDACTED, Posted: Jan 13 2008 at 2:15 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) heroics are mainly for badges, the possibility of a good drop is just a bonus. mech is excelent for this purpose only real trick is to bring a lock for the demons.

I farmed heroic mech for 5 months, about 5 runs a week. Never saw the sun eater drop. Finally got it on some random pug when i was really bored like 3 months after i started kara.

In kara, i went from neutral to exalted getting only the 2 tier pieces and moroes' trinket. Those are the only tank items that dropped for me. Well, i got aran's ring the other day. That was is. Well after i needed it though.
The one day i was sick and didn't come on for kara when we ran it regularly, they got a pug tank and King's Defender dropped. I haven't seen it since.

Since i started TK/SSC (been about 2-3 months), raiding 5 days a week, the only items i have to show for it are Mallet of the Tides and the Red Havoc Boots. I have the most DKP of all the tanks in my guild. I had the opportunity to go to SSC one day, but decided not to so i could continue farming for my resist gear and 2, TWO, Spyglass of the Hidden Fleets dropped in one run (that makes 5 that my guild has seen). Haven't seen one since.

**** just doesn't drop when i'm there.

I'll throw My 2 cents in since people seem to have theirs.

Armory before I Discuss:

My own Personal Bias states that for tanking (Threat generation wise and Damage wise) One would be better off with a slow 1 handed weapon, especially if it fits your racials, IE Sword/Mace spec.

With the added expertise, Slower speed, Hit rating boost as well as Resilliance boost for those whom need just a little more crit reduction, The gladiator weapons are probably your best bet.

Why? Devastate got super buffed since the patch, increasing threat generation as well as Damage. 50% of weapon damage, adding up 35 per sunder (175 extra damage at max) aswell as the chance to crit and able to spam every 1.5 seconds. With a fast one hander, you will get the +def bonus, but with a slow 1 hander you get a huge, HUGE buff to your threat generation. Spamming Heroic Strike may be fine for the fast 1 handers, but they miss the big damage (and thus big threat) from a lot of consecutive hits from a slow weapon.

Also some basic logic from the Arms tree to factor things in: Spamming heroic Strike sucks for DPS, but spamming Slam after a consecutive hit with imp slam, or just spamming it nonstop with reg slam and full rage = much better damage. The same applies to Tanking

Actually, HS is a better ability to use for threat than slam. It has a higher base threat as I recall, and it allows you to use other high-threat abilities in between.

On the note of Fireguard Vs. Sun Eater, I'd say use both for different purposes. Fireguard works great as a TPS weapon, whereas the SE works great for an avoidance set.

Oh, and just to annoy a few people... I got the SE on my first H-Mech run ever. :) Then I got a KD before getting half-way to Exalted (or maybe even around when I hit Revered) with VE.

Also got the chest off of Nightbane on my first kill on that toon ever.

*Runs away*

Never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever EVER use slam with a one handed weapon.

NEVER.

As to the original question, I would say, go do heroic mech anyways for badges. If you happen to pick up a Sun Eater, use it on avoidance-necessary fights. If you don't get it, don't worry about it.
