What is your best threat building routine?Follow

Last night I was arcane bolt sponge in the Curator fight, and it was the first fight I sat there and stared at my threat meter. I couldn't believe how far off the pace from the MT I was. At any point in the fight (he had a very marginal head start...very marginal) he had 50% or more threat than I did on Curator.

I thought I was hitting my cooldowns as quickly as I could without being spastic, but I just couldn't keep up. I think he uses the sword that drops in kara while I use Sun Eater (we both have mongoose). He has the Azure Shield and I have the one from the first boss in Shadowlabs.

Any idea how I can improve my threat? I typically go...

blood rage and commanding shout right after pull
shield bash
devastate a few times
demoralizing shout
thunderclap (if not near cc)
revenge when up

rinse repeat as cooldowns come up and maintaining shield block.

He was creaming me on threat generation, though. How can I improve mine? Thanks!

You said Shield Bash. Did you mean Shield Slam?

Typicially, you want to lead with Shield Slam, Devastate, Devastate, Revenge, Shield Slam, Devastate, Devastate, Revenge... and repeat. Swap out a Devastate with a TClap to make sure it's up, but the threat rotation isn't too complicated. Use Heroic Strike whenever you have Rage to dump as well - it's a good bit of Rage and not on the GCD.

I start with a nice:
/chicken

OMG that totally ticks those sparks off.

J/k. I always thought there was not a set aggro on them.

Each Flare spawns with about 1000 threat from a random, non-tank player character and advances in that character's direction while hitting nearby enemies with Arcing Sear.

Each Flare must be destroyed within 10 seconds, before the next one spawns

Normally we just burn them down (granted I'm tanking Curator, but our 'off tank' is always in DPS gear. Our clothies are always hugging the wall, and by the time the flare get to any clothie it's already dead.

While it is not necessary to tank the Flares, doing so gets them to hold still and makes them easier to kill.
Again, they're only talking about making it easier for the melee to catch up. If everyone has the macro:

/target Astral Flare

Then there should not be any issue about burning them down.

Are people dying? Is that why you're worried about tanking these? The amount of DPS everyone is putting on that thing within 2-5 seconds is crazy. IMO there's almost no way to hold aggro from all that.

Just normal tanking methods would be what you need... but again as much DPS is being put out... the best you can hope for is to act as a speed bump to slow it down.

*edit* Oh OP... your MT had something you did not... Revenges, on top of Slams, blocks, dodges, devastates etc... he may even had 1 or 2 Misdirects on him from Hunters?

Hehe, no, sorry, I wasn't trying to tank the flares, I was second in aggro (on purpose) on Curator so that I would be the one absorbing the arcane bolts (since I have arcane resist gear). It just so happened that I had time to watch the threat meter that was running and saw how far behind I fell throughout the fight. The MT was continuously putting out about 50%-60% more threat than I was.

You know, RP, I bet that may have been where I was off. I meant Shield Bash, the one that interrupts casting. I have probably been leading off with the wrong dang shield attack! I still use Shield Slam in my rotation, but it has typically been secondary (or tertiary) to other abilities as the cooldowns wear off. /headslap

I'll change up my rotation and see how I do. Dang, I can't believe I've been using the wrong shield attack. /sigh Thanks for the help!

Since he was the one getting hit right off the bat, he had the ability to use Revenge. Since you weren't really getting hit, you could never use Revenge. I'm willing to bet that a lot of his additional rage was from Revenge. Also MT will always generate more rage since they're taking damage, so he can put that rage to use to generate threat faster than you.

Once im in combat I pop blood-rage then immideately followed by a 'Shield slam'.
Then its devastate and revenge when its up. (at some bosses i also use shieldblock whenever i can (maiden for instance 5k crushing... ouch).

Once my rage is around 50 i start bashing my keyboard like an Angry German kiddo. Pushing heroic strike and devastate simultaniously (or however its spelled) (even specced 3 points in heroic strike for it... god i love bashing my keyboard). And then devastate and revenge again. Don't forget to use TC as well since it has some decent aggro

Anyway since he is MT-ing Curator he will get the most damage taken from him. So its kinda logical that he can produce more threat since he thus has more rage and all. So I wouldnt worry about it that much.

Last night I was MT for clearing trash from the back door to Curator, and beyond that to Shade. I got to try out my "new" rotation (using shield slam and not shield bash). Boy, what a difference that little 4-letter word makes!

New rotation works like a champ. I'm a new tank now. :) Thanks, everybody!

Ive handled sparks and tanked curator.

On the sparks, yes they have an ag table and you can easily grab em with a shield slam on the way to the dps. This stops them dead in thier tracks and lets the dps do thier thing.

On curator, he hits pretty hard so, yeah, whoever is tanking him is gonna get a load of rage. My tanking idea is to keep devastate, revenge and shield block all on cooldown. Throw in shouts when needed and shield slam when its cooled and I have enough rage. iirc, last night I had 250k threat by the time the fight was over.

Yeah revenge can make a huge difference. It's a cheap nice way to increase agro. Used with shield block it can build up quickly.

As for shield slam/bash; I use shield bash if my rage is getting low but usually I stick with shield slam.

you shouldb't really be bringing 2 full prot tanks to kara :/

just put on your dps gear and spam HS and devastate for aggro. you can do shield slam yes, but because you're going to be probably rage starved due to not being attacked it probably won't be overly worthwhile...

Shield slam first
Devestate spam, using shield slam whenever it's off cd
After 5 sunders are on the target
Just keep revenge and shield slam on CD keep heroic strike going, spamming devestate whenever SS or Rvng are on CD.

Gets me about 1000-1100 tps.
