I have read Aethiens "gear check list" and am slowly acquiring most of the items on that list.
I'll post my armory page for some comments about how and where I can improve on things: http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Dalvengyr&n=Jebek

What should I be shooting for (pun intended), the casual raider that I am? I don't really like to pvp, and aside from the gladiators axe, none of that eq appeals to me that much.

I like the beast master spec, and have gone towards as much attack power as I can. My hp is a tad below that 7k benchmark, but I plan on putting a clefthide armor kit on my legs to replace the libram enchant ( I got sidetracked one day and thought it would be fun to do that quest).
I was tempted to replace my current cloak with a green "of the bandit" I found in BM, but decided to auction that off, and will seek out the agility enchant for that.
My guild is currently working and learning Kara, so hopefully one day soon I can get the Sunfury bow (I prefer bows over guns). I do have a Valanos and Torn-heart in inventory as well.
I am also running heroics as often as I can, working on acquiring the desolation set, even though I only have the helm so far.
I would love to get out of those green shoulders, as good as they are, but just haven't found anything yet.

first: get rid of the bow asap.
Its to fast (1.74 speed whilst 1.8 is the optimal no lag minimum speed to weave steadyshots).
I suggest getting the bloodwarden's rifle because ofits 2.6 speed, that gets you to 1.88 speed after haste wich is optimal for steadyshotweaving (it could actually increase your dps by 30% or more...)
Plus its a questgun so really easy to get.
Also try running SV for both the quest helm and BL shoulders.

And you dont need to socket gems that match the socketcolour.
So for your legs just put in + agi gems. (you are at ~300 autoshot dps now so you can stop with +Ap and slowly switch to +agi gems)

edit: 4/5 frenzy is enough to keep it up nearly the whole time, and 5/5 mortal shots is a pretty damn big improvement for dps.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I did the coilfang helm quest a long time ago and was infatuated with my new-at-the-time stalkers helm, and promptly vendered the coif. I have been banging away at SV, but the mobs hate me and havent dropped any nice presents.

Gemwise I had matched sockets only to get the bonus, using what I could afford at the time (still saving for the epic mount).

I don't quite get the speed thing with weapons. Wouldn't a faster weapon speed mean more arrows flying at the target, equaling more damage per second? I will add scopes to the Valanos and Torn-heart that I have, and experiment with the damage to see what happens.

Happy hunting!

It does equal more arrows flying at the target, and it could equal more DPS,if all you did was use auto-shot. but that isn't all we do.

As a mana starved BM your best option is to go for a 1:1 steady:auto ratio(meaning for every one auto-shot fired you fire a steady shot). Steady Shot takes 1.5 seconds to cast, factor in the lag time between you pressing the button and the shot actually firing it equals out to about 1.75-1.8 unless your comp really sucks like mine and am more comfortable around 1.9 seconds.

With that number in mind any auto-shots fired faster than that would be clipped making you lose one auto-shot because your steady shot was still being cast. It hurts your DPS in the long run.
