New Hunter here; need some adviceFollow

#1 Jan 09 2008 at 8:21 AM Rating: Default
I'm interested in making a ranged DPS hunter, though I know that the most popular DPS spec for Hunters is BM (and I like that tree; almost every talent is great). That said...

1. Is it possible to do at least decent ranged damage alongside your pet if you spec heavily into BM?

2. How viable are Marksmanship and Survival for DPS?

3. I created three beta builds for a DPS Hunter, each one emphasizing a different tree.

Beast Mastery

Marksmanship

Survival (obviously this one focuses a little on improving traps and general efficiency as well as DPS)

Your pet will never do more damage than you, unless you sit there and do nothing. BM hunters rely heavily on their pet, that doesn't mean their pet does more damage than the hunter themselves. It's just some talents as well as an ability increase damage output while the pet is out(and alive). To put it in basics, without your pet as a BM hunter you take a big hit on your DPS output.

Both are very good DPS, both offer other things besides DPS, both are viable.

I'm not going to comment on the other trees, but I will talk about the BM build you choose. There are some things to pick out about it.

Frenzy: You don't need 5/5 in frenzy. 4/5 is enough point to have frenzy proc and active for something like 98% of the fight.

Endurance Training, Thick Hide, and Catlike Reflexes. These are fine for leveling, but once you hit 70, you might want to rethink their viability. In raids they aren't useful because you will be 2-shotted or less with or without them. However they may be helpfull in PvP but I don't know if you want to choose them over Mortal Shots, which requires you to go 20 points into Marksman.

Improved Hunters Mark is situational. It's good for raids, but you only need 1 hunter to cast it, any more than that 1 hunter it is just waisted talent points. Efficiency would be a better choice while leveling.

I would really not look too deaply into it at this point. Start up playing a hunter and decide how you want to play. Each spec is completely different, and as such require different play styles. I went with BM because my playstyle fits it well, I utalize my pet and my pet is everything to me. BM hunters are all about speedy attacks and sustained damage. For MM hunters, pets are an after thought, their DPS is hard hitting burst damage, which is great for PvP. SV hunters are crit whores, they use basic attacks and rely heavily on their crits to get damage, they bring the most utility to a group, have more "Oh ****" buttons than the other two specs and have great DPS. All specs work well, if played right, you just have to find your niche.

I agree. Don't worry to much about months down the road. Instead take your time to figure out what "You" like as far as how your class is progressing.

It's a good idea to look at the 70 builds and see what you need. But don't try to level up like that. I made that mistake with my warrior. I started Prot and went that way all the way until 40+ where the grind was unbearable. So I respeced Fury to pick up the pace.

I personally recommend going deep into the BM tree to get your t/BW before throwing points anywhere else. (it's a life saver. Trust me)
