What are the Best Professions for a HunterFollow

#1 Jan 08 2008 at 5:57 AM Rating: Default
I am a level 58 Hunter and would like to know what is the best 2 professions for a hunter. I have been doing Mining/Blacksmithing, but do not know if that is best.

Thanks in advance for the help.

there is no "Best".

mining, skinning, herbalism, leatherworking are all fairly useful. Engineering is fun too.

My hunter has Mining and Blacksmithing as his two professions, they make money and items in which I can use.

But depends on what you decide you want to do with your hunter...

Enigneering woot!!

Feign Death + Jumple Cables = many many people falling in love with you.

Explosives to open doors/chests = many more people falling in love with you

Surestrike Goggles v2.0= me falling in love with myself. lol

Flying mounts(granted they are becoming somewhat commonplace it makes me sad, but oh well)

The Mote extractor. It extracts mote from gas clouds in the air, nothing like flying around Netherstorm looking for mining nodes and getting 7 primal mana within 2 hours. Now if only they would make mote of fire gas clouds I would be very very happy.

Let's not forget the bombs. If your tired of sitting there watching the mage AoE those trash pulls while you already blew your volley load and waiting for the 2 minute CD, you can AoE with those oh so fun bombs engineers make.

But really, it's up to you a few professions offer some really nice stuff for hunters, I just love my engineering and wouldn't give it up for anything.

Edit: forgot something that is great for hunters, you can make your own scopes.

Aside from that don't expect to get rich off of engineering, it really is a self serving profession.

Skinning/ leatherworking is probably the most commonplace and "best" choice because of the really nice epic patterns at 375. Thick Netherscale Breastplate, Nethercobra, Nethercleft, Cobrahide and Clefthoof armor kits are good money makers....

It really just depends on what you want your professions to do, help you with equipment or help you make money or both.

Gathering professions are just for making money obviously so doubling up on one of those is very lucrative.

Engineering makes for a very fun and different playing experience, along with being able to make your own scopes.

Any crafting profession should be taken as either a self serving professions or a money maker, trying to do both will usually result in a net income of zero, not saying you can't make money, but trying to do both doesn't make you much money or you end up taking to much time crafting and not enough time farming mats or advancing in the game.

You can alternate between self serving phases and profiting phases though, but in the end I think you'd be better off just burning through your time and money getting what you want out of the profession(getting to 375 and making your epic patterns) then switching it to profit phase.

I'm a skinner/leatherworker myself and have found it to be very useful. However, Just about any profession will benefit you with maybe the exception of tailoring.

Actually tailoring can help you with Enchanting =D

I would go engineering though. The fact you have some kind of wipe protection options is nice. Just hope you don't die too =P...

Oh and there is the thing I forgot to mention about the 20% chance to fail (might be more or less) and don't waste them on a body that has released... I have yet to see them work in that case.

Don't you man 20% chance to succeed lol :-P

I use to think they never worked on released players, but I have had it work a few time on them. I love it so much because no matter how many times I use them I always get the WooHoo!!! fealing every time I use them and they work. It can really be a time saver in places like Coilfang and TK, where the GY is a mile away from the instance and then you still have to run through the instance itself.

For my lvl 70 hunter I went alch/herb and have made a sick amount of money mostly off selling the herbs, but also a few of the higher end BC potions are huge money makers, plus it's always nice to have plenty of mana/health and those lovely elixirs to pass around in pugs to make things go easier

For anyone under level 70 I recommend two gathering skills. Decide which Tade skill you'd like to go into at 70th and choose the appropriate gathering skill. And then take another of your choice. You'll make a lot of money this way, and you'll need a lot of money for your riding skill. Once at 70 you can reevaluate your Tade options and pick up something you think you'd like. LW for the Ebon Netherscale set; BS for the fine 2-hand weapons; Alchemy for the potions/elixirs/flasks and transmutes; just about every trade save Tailoring is a decent option for a Hunter.

My hunter is a miner and herbalist. There is tons of gold you can make and I never have to worry about potions, elixirs and gems.
My druid alt is the "classic" skinner/leatherworker combo which also works well. But I cannot make nearly the same amount of gold with my druid as with my hunter. Gathering profession, espec. mining and herbalism are perfect for making gold (also you'll need a 280% flying mount at level 70 to really make the big gold).

My Hunter is a Skinning/Dragonscale Leatherworker, and I've not regretted it at all. First of all, I like crafting. Making stuff that myself and others can wear. Doing random inspects, and finding an item that says "made by me" on it is always satisfying. Also, my Epic boots wouldn't have been mine without it.

Not to mention that my Druid got her Heavy Clefthoof kit from my Hunter, as well as the armor patches and so on. On that character, I'm Mining/Jewelcrafter which provides me with most of the gems I use on my characters, and the Primal Fire/Jewels I can sell and buy other gems for.

Not to mention that as a Hunter, farming a stack or five of Thick Clefthoof Leather goes fast as hell. That stuff sells decently, and if portioned out so you don't drown the market, will net you a healthy sum of cash.

Not to mention that you actually make some decent gold just from the trash loot / Greenies you get while skinning.

I really like being an enchanter. It can be really frustrating to run through instances and not get that one formula you're looking for... But it's still nice being able to enchant most of my own gear. If I can't enchant it myself, I can at least DE my own mats. I'm also well-loved in 5-mans and Kara raids, because I'm usually the only enchanter who can DE blues that no one wants. 20g for a shard instead of 5g to a vendor is always nice.

It's also nice for making money once you can DE outland greens. I would say that 90% of the green world drops are worth more disenchanted than they are sold on the AH or sold to vendor.

My second profession is mining. I'm trying to come up with time to go farming low level ores to drop it and take up engineering. But at the same time... It's so hard to bring myself to doing it... Grr. I like seeing a node and mining it, or mining earth elementals. It's always hard to drop a money-making profession in favor of a money-sucking profession.

I personally am big on professions that allow you to craft armor or weapons you can use; its typically a good way to get epics before raiding or heroics at 70 and allows you to have a gear advantage over those who haven't chosen those professions.

I went with leather working and skinning and I still haven't managed to replace my crafted chest piece, though ive replaced the bracers and belt.

As others have said, having leatherworking is nice while leveling but so is having gathering proffesions for the easy cash.

However both herb and mining requires you to cruise around looking for herbs/nodes and that can easily get a bit boring(to boring for some)
And now with TBC Gold is alot easier to come by without proffesions imo so i wouldnt rate them just as high as before.

on the other hand crafting proffesions(lw for a hunter) has gone the opposite and seem to offer more in tha aspect of making money at level cap now than it did before and there def i som things worth making for yourself at 70 and beyond.

1 thing i would like to point out tho is that enchanting is a really nice proffesion for hunter in my eyes. Everyone needs enchant BUT few if any class can solo as much content as a hunter(atleast as easy as a hunter) so you can really make the most of disenchanting as a hunter.(and its pretty fun to do aswell, atleast for a while)

I'll second Syntastic for all the stated reasons. Engineering ftw. And if you go engineering, mining is a mandatory second profession.

I've leveled to 70 using mainly skinning/mining. For the most part, money hasn't been an issue.

However, I recently joined a new guild and have started Kara, so my pockets have been on the verge of emptiness because of the cost of pots and such (I haven't had much time to farm or run dailies, so income has been low). I dropped mining in order to level up herbalism in the hopes that I can offset the price of pots... still have skinning though.

I plan on keeping my hunter as a gatherer/farmer for mats and gold while using my pally alt (lvl 50 atm) for (dis)enchanting and some other crafting prof... maybe alchemy.

Alch/Herb for me. Reason is, making your own flask/elixirs is way easier and cost less gold. Which you be needing at raids for extra dps output. You can also use this your gold resource if you dont need any of your made pots.

If money is not an issue, engineering is awesome for hunters.

Scopes, guns, ammunition, goggles, explosives are all great.
