new 70 - frost pvpFollow

Hello all.
Ive been 70 for a few weeks now, and have just realized that the game does not even start until you reach 70. I'm currently 17/0/44 frost pvp spec, with my intent for the long run being arena. Ive been doing a good bit of reading on the various forums and such, but i have some questions specific to frost pvp mages that im sure many people would benefit from seeing the answers to. I would greatly appreciate it if any of you experts could bestow some of your wisdom upon me :).

Ive got all level 70 blues, plus the frozen shadoweave boots and shoulders (not enough shadowcloth for robe yet). +574 frost dam, no resil, 12%crit.

First off, would my best bet for gear be to grind bg's to get s1 stuff, then join an arena team? should this set also be matched with the vindicator's set? I'm also not really sure what order to buy the pieces. i was thinking staff first, then just progressively replace the worst piece of gear i have left.

what bg's would be the most efficient for grinding honor points? ive been doing mostly AB just because i like the layout of the map.

this may be a really stupid question, i dont know. are you supposed to actually click your spells on the hotbar while fighting? ive been pressing the numbers on the keyboard, but ive noticed in some of the videos that people are just using their mouse to click spells.

also, what type of gems should i be using to socket my gear? atm ive got some +spell dam, +crit, +stam, and +spell hit.

my last question is for any input on general pvp strategies for the frost mage. like a said earlier, ive been watching some videos to try to pick up some strategies. what ive learned so far is counterspell casters, especially if they're casting a heal, frost nova then ice lance and CoC, use the water elemental for extra dps and frost novas, and Ice Block if you get into trouble. The problem for me is that most of the time i just dont do enough damage. after my frost nova, the WE's frost nova, coldsnap then more FN's, and ice lance/CoC while they're frozen, my enemies still have health and my death is imminent. will this change when i get more +dam and +resil with better gear, or do i need to change my strategy?

Thank you for all input and advice.

Get all the pvp epics, try to play some arena while you're at it, just to get some points every week. Generally the benchmarks to be a "good" pvp mage are 10k hp, 800 spelldamage and 350-400 res, or more if you get FFed alot. Replacing your worst items first is best way to gear up in my opinion.

If you get the entire season one set (or possibly a piece or two of the s3 set) and all the vindicator pieces (and the trinket), you'll be around these numbers in no time. The gems you will be using should be either 12 stam, 6 stam 5 spelldamage, 9 spelldamage or 8 (10 if you get the halaa one) resilience. Mix and match here until you're comfortable with it, everyone does this differently.

Socket boni are nice, but most people skip them, don't gem any different then you would be because of them, unless you're using the same gems, but in different pieces of gear.

Clicking your bar is bad, very bad, so it's a good thing you're not doing that. I have nearly every skill I use bound to some key, it's important, as it allows you to react quicker, and also keeps your mouse free to turn your camera.

The most important thing for a mage to do in arena is CC, mostly by polymorph, but you'll also be using your array of frost spells, rank 1 frostbolt, (rank 1) cone of cold and your novas. And while you're doing all of this, you have your focus frame set to an enemy caster, often a healer, to counterspell where it matters. With improved CS, you can also just CS a healer that's not casting, if you think you're able to land the kill in those 4 seconds.

Your gear, spec, and tactics are different in every setup you run, but this holds true for most setups, as mages are simply masters of cc :P.

Just play some games, it's fun to see yourself improving, and you'll be getting points even if you lose everything. I'd suggest teaming up with a disc priest and a rogue and doing some 3v3, this is possibly the best setup there is for mages at the moment.

Hope that answers everything, good luck!

Good advice, I am just starting to gear up for pvP (haven't done it since a long grind at 60 for gear). I have two pieces of S1 gear, the rest I am working on still. Is MSD still the best meta gem to get, I was thinking that or the 180hp+5% stun resist.

Also, rated you up, grats on scholar :D

Thanks for the rate up man, I appreciate it :D.

I still use the MSD myself, it has an internal cooldown of 45 seconds now, but when it isn't on that cooldown it procs very quickly. I think I'm getting about the same amount of procs, but spread out evenly instead of having like three in a row once in five minutes.

The stun resist is nice if you can't cope with the damage quite yet, I'd prefer survivability over the MSD if you're having trouble surviving.
