A little more info would help a bit... What is your level? Do you plan to PvE? PvP? Arena? A little of each?
If you plan to raid, Suppression makes up for hit rating until you reach the 202 hit cap, but all but wasted for PvP. Curse of Exhaustion makes kiting melee attackers cake in PvP, but almost never used in grinding, farming or PvE in general.

This is the build I use mostly. 44/17/0 with curse of exhaustion and imp imp. this build would let me chain 5 or more mobs at the same time and still finish the fight ready to start another one after a dark pact or 2. I could grind indefinately without stopping to drink. I would gear with as much shadow spell bonus and stamina (in that order) that I could wear to avoid having to use more than my 3 instant dots and having my imp for a mana battery.
In a more PvP oriented setting (PvP server for example)I would skip imp imp and go imp HS like this.

For raiding I use this 40/0/21 build for a little more pop with my Shadow Bolt. Note the lack of Fel Concentration because, frankly I don't survive long enough if I try to drain tank in a raid situation.

If you plan to use your pet, keep in mind that after about level 30 or so your VW really sucks at holding aggro, and around level 40 he really just holds aggro long enough to apply your dots even if you let him taunt a few times.
Imp is a glorified mana battery (remember to take him out of phase shift at buff time), succy has a larger mana pool, and some locks use her with all her skills turned off to add a little dps while still having a mana battery.
Felpup is my favorite all round pet by far, dispells, spell lock and a decent mana pool if you put his skills on manual and remember to drain soul for the 15% mana return when soloing. And on a PvP server paranoia is priceless (/e can see %t sneaking around)

imp coa=wasted talent points, but its been said a few times. For bg's you could try the classic sl/sl or just go deep aff and just run around and throw dots on everyone. That, with an imp with bow= loads of fun and dmg until your are found.
