I've been looking around and I havent seen a good breakdown analysis of 1h and 2h weapon types and their effectiveness. Understanding that many paladins just stick with 1h sword for most things and 2h sword for ret builds, I was curious why paladins didnt opt to use axes maces or polearms very much. Is there a limitation in selection? or personal preference? or just better stat boosting swords?
Can anyone direct me to a guide or give me some thoughts on weapon types? thanks

Holy: Your best healing weapons are going to be 1h maces

Prot: There are a few 1h maces that are good and a few 1h swords that are good, avoid all 2 handers

Ret: Get whatever you can, sword, axe, mace, polearm, doesn't matter.

to elaborate just a little on what dilbert said...

for holy all your weapon will provide is stats so get the one with the most +healing, mp5, spell crit,, etc. (like dilbert said, this will be 1h maces)

for prot you want as much spell damage as you can get and a fast 1h'er. faster weapons will allow you to stack SoV faster and build faster and more consistent threat.

for ret, you want the slowest weapon you can find. getting a fast 2h will gimp your dps big time. all types have both slow and fast 2h, so just get whichever is the best for your level.

is there any general trend with axes or polearms that would make them useful/not.

..They do...at least ret can.

As said above me, you won't see a 1 hand axe, with spell damage, very often (for prot spec)..and if your holy, you wont see a 1 hand axe with +healing.

But for ret, it doesn't matter at all if its a polearm, 2hand mace, 2hand axe, or 2hand sword...You just want the slowest one :D

yep, general trend is neither one will have much if any +healing or +spell damage so neither is good for holy or prot. many polearms are a little faster so they aren't usually as good, but many axes and a few polearms are slow enough to be uesful for ret. right now i'm using an axe on my ret. i like axes and tend to go for those or polearms when they're at least equal to other types.
