I've often thought about how nice it would be if you could have your pet "defend" another group member. For example...have a priest in your group? Click on priest, hit "defend" button and the pet will guard the priest and attack anything that hits him/her.

I don't think this would be OP'd and seems reasonable.

Opinions?

I can already have my pet defend another party member. Have a Priest in my group? Click on mob wailing on priest, hit "ctrl+F1" and my pet will go help out.

What you're suggesting has been suggested before. It's not a terrible idea, but it seems like it would require you to keep your pet at your side until it's needed to defend. That's a waste of potential DPS.

Part of becoming a good hunter is learning to control your pet. Manually pulling mobs off squishies in the way I've described above isn't hard. A "defend" button wouldnt be OP. It would be unnecessary.

Yeah I use Ctrl-F1 as well. You are right that a "defend" setup isn't necessary. In fact it would probably be completely useless if you were specced BM. But I know my MM hunter would use it all the time since my pet doesn't contrinute tons of additional dps. He could definitely be spared to take up a defensive position.

I'm just wishing here.

Pay attention to where the people you want to defend in your party list are.

Press the F key that corresponds to their position (if they are 5th, then hit F5) and hit the actual "F" key to 'assist', it will target their target- send pet. Most of the time they will have switched to target whatever is wailing on them, mages though, might nova and move and keep on blasting a target so be aware of that. If they do, you'll have to specifically select the target that is on them and send the pet as was already stated.

If you do this, you can also manually 'growl' the pet (if your growl is off, which is likely for instances), spam the growl as often as it's out of CD. This can pull the target off the priest or mage, especially if they are doing aggro reduction.

This lets you stay on target and in your rotation while your pet lends a hand. This gets Morris lots of pats on the head when in groups. He likes that.

I've rebound almost all the keys around wasd to do something. My pet attack is q. I don't think more automation is the answer, as it takes less skill. I think part of being a hunter is to learn how to use your pet.

LoL. This thread wasn't really meant as a "how do I have my pet do ..." I know how to use my pet in groups. I've talking more about a wistful desire, not a necessity.

I also know that there is can be an awful lot of time between a clothie getting hit and my pet getting there to pull the threat off of said clothie. Sure it wouldn't be necessary IF: the tank didn't lose aggro...the clothie didn't pull aggro...I didn't trap the mob...my pet is right there to pick up aggro...I actually notice the mob...someone else picks up the aggro.

But regretfully things don't always go smoothly. Some PUG's I've been in the mobs are running around like cockroaches with the lights turned on. I think it would be great to have my pet shadow a specified player in "defense" mode. That way I could focus on helping to restore some order knowing that Mr. Pet was doing his part automatically. Will this ever happen? probably not. Is it the most needed thing for hunters right now? nope. Would some people enjoy it? I know I would. Maybe I'm the only one.

Then again...I'm just bored and daydreaming. Please don't take this thread too seriously folks.

Something like that would be nice for raids and instances, but we already get enough flack from the rest of the community about being over powered. Hunters are already pretty easy in raids, they can't make it even easier for us. Plus, if we had a defend focus option for our pet, that could EASILY be called overpowered in PvP- especially arenas.

Yeah, 5v5 with 4 Hunters and a Healer. Everyone sets pet to defend the healer. It would be like being hit with a buzzsaw.

It's not a horrible idea, but the situation you describe with the PUG is one which can be solved by people learning to play their class and work better together with their group mates. Your suggestion, if implemented, would further dumb down the skill required to play the game, which would only serve to perpetuate players advancing who have no skill. Which would lead to your finding more clueless PUGs. Which would require more features to overcome. See the vicious cycle?

I'd rather see the skill level required increase, rather than decrease.

Here are things you can do to accomplish the same goal as your suggested feature request:

/w the healer. Tell him that you'll be laying a Freezing Trap in front of him in case a mob heads his way. Tell him to stand and heal, rather than moving around, if that's how he is playing. You'll both protect him and improve his healing, since most healers need to stand and cast and time spent moving is time not spent healing.

Learn your F keys. Note the F key associated with your healer. Lets say it's F4 for this example. If a mob heads for the healer, Hit F4, f, <shift>1. Your Pet is not attacking the mob on the Healer, and it's taken you almost no time to accomplish.
As an alternative to the example above, you can make a macro to do all of this, using the /focus feature. Set your /focus to the Healer and one macro serves for all groups, as opposed to the macros I see people use which require that they remember to change a name in for every single group.

You Pet is a significant DPs contributor. Besides the reduction in skill that your 'guard' feature would encourage, you'd be robbing your groups of the DPS the Pet contributes to every fight.

My vote is for smart play to overcome issues, not more features.
