Spell hit QuestionsFollow

I understand that Mages have a base chance (without talents) of 83% to hit with spells on level 73 Bosses, and that 12.6 Spell hit gear = 1% additional to hit gear.
I know that elemental Precision increases your chance to hit with spells by 3% (or effectively 38 spell hit increase).

There is an Arcane talent that reduces our targets resistance to spells by 10, (Sorry but I can't remember the name atm) what is that 10? Is it 10%, Is it 10 spell hit? Hopefully someone can give me the answer as I am working out how much spell hit I need to reach 99% on raid bosses.

Im sure this has been covered before so if you remembmer please can you link the topic.

Also I read somewhere that when you cast a spell a roll is made to determine whether the spell Crits, Hits or Misses (Is this correct?). If this is the case is it safe to assume that a spell that is resisted would never have been a Crit?

Finally does spell penetration from PvP gear contribute to spell hit on PvE.
I am asking this because I was told that a Tanks Defense (PvE) and Resiliance (PvP) both contribute to the magic number to where they are almost uncrittable by MoBs.

Thanks in advance for your answers.

arcane subtlety gives spell penetration, not spell hit.

spells don't use the attack table. see http://www.wowwiki.com/Attack_table#Attack_spells

and crit roll is seperate from resist roll. read http://www.wowwiki.com/Spell_hit_rating#The_effect_of_Spell_Hit_chance_on_Spell_Critical_Hit_chance

no. spell penetration reduces a mobs resistance to the given school(s) of magic. see http://www.wowwiki.com/Spell_penetration

It is basically an increase to spellhit for arcane specced mages (for arcane spells) where you will only need 76 spellhit (I believe is the number) instead of the normal 164.

I'll help clarify a few things in relation to the tank side of it, since you mentioned it.

If you are a tank, you cannot rely on Resilience to be the buffer of your stats. It can help push you over the mark (102.4% against raid bosses, i.e. lvl 73).

Defense rating has to be over 490. Thats to attain uncrittable (which is what everything BUT a raid boss can do).

A Raid boss (this applies to Kara also Maiden and beyond can crush) you have to have that magic # I posted above to be uncrushable. A crush is a 150% of normal dmg hit, and with a mob smacking you for 3-4k normally, well, you don't wanna see too many 5-7k shots.

On to the concept of spell hit and the like. Again, spell hit is only applicable to raiding really. You don't need a whole lot of it for heroics, I think I roll with around 56 spell hit + elemental precision, and I'm just fine, I might encounter 2-3 resists in an entire 5 man run, that to me, is sufficient, nothing is perfect as they say.

Once you get to 10+ man content, spell hit is god, simple as that. Its the theorycrafted proven method of improving damage, if you have crappy spell hit, you're gonna get resists all over the place. Stack some spell hit and your chance to hit goes up, increasing your overall dmg.

Spell hit - Spell Dmg - Spell Crit / Spell Haste. Thats pretty well the order in which you want to bump your stats, at least till you're hit capped. Then dump as much spell dmg and crit as you can into your gear while staying hit capped or very close to it.

Its all a game of math really. You're just a bunch of pretty pixels pushing an abacus back and forth really fast.

Got my spell hit maxed (just over at 168)

Been working damage mostly after that but how much is enough?

I'm currently at +-1026 SD and 25% crit on my own buffs.

I don't know at how much spell damage should I focus more on crit.

Just curious, being hit rate capped at 164 spell hit translates to what percent to hit? It can't be 100% chance to hit, but I was wondering if it is around there or something.

There's a 1% chance to miss always. So hit cap means you have 16% chance to miss overridden, which means you've reduced the inherent 17% on bosses down to 1%.
