any way to know a party member got aggro?Follow

#1 Jan 07 2008 at 5:55 AM Rating: Decent
Is there a simple way to see when a party member stole aggro
from me? Perhaps some addon, like banzai but for others?

I can of course see the target of my target, but
when there are 4+ mobs I find it hard to keep track of all
of them. This is especially a problem if some are casters
(I can usually hold aggro on melee mobs).

I'm trying to learn the basics of tanking... :-)

Look to see whose health is dropping.... :)

Just kidding.

If you see a caster casting at someone who isn't you, hit them with a macro (i.e. casts RD on their target - acts like a taunt). It's either in the FAQ or in the Macro guide (on Main WoW Forum).

It also highlights the borders of people who have aggro with a red line. Makes it really easy to heal.

just to throw my 2¢ in there... healbot has a setting to see who's taking aggro.

So does grid actually. I use it to pre-heal someone who is about to take damage.

wanna know how someone has agro?

if they're getting hit and not facing you, aside from aoe's and multi-target attacks.

barring an agro wipe ability, overzealous fire mage, or fighting a caster mob(where your holy shield is useless for extra threat) or getting healed too much because your gear isn't great, there should be no realistic reason to lose agro as a paladin on trash mobs, or even bosses. (except of course, dying)

Yes in a perfect world in which all the conditions are met then a tank shouldn't lose aggro to anyone else.

Waiting to see if someone gets hit is a poor way to determine if someone has aggro, especially if the person who is getting hit has 7k hp and they were just crit for 10k. That's why addons can be beneficial to see if they have aggro BEFORE they get hit.

Now I don't use a lot of addons, I'll keep up Omen for other people to make sure that they are under me, but they can be very helpful in situations where one second is the difference between living and meat.

now obviously that's worst case scenario, and often times can't be helped. (your mob is casting a spell for example and hoj is still on cooldown). But the instant it's not paying attention to you, you need to immediately push taunt button(s) and your highest agro moves on it, or protect said squishier target with bop.

It's a common scenario in heroics, and I'm well aware of tanking strategy.

Also, it's not always one mob you are fighting. In many cases it is multiple mobs that you have to keep tabs on, and checking a quick table instead of tabbing over every single mob to make sure they are targeting me is much more efficient.

tabbing over every mob isn't required. :)

Just keeping them all on the screen isn't feasible in some cases.

I will be looking for an addon to help with this. Otherwise I'm sure to have problems.

Right now at Lv66, it isn't as nessesary because players arn't usualy getting 1-shot. But from my experience it gets very tough, esspecialy when you get an additional 2-4 mobs from an add. There health bars seem to cover more than enough to spot minor direction changes.

Problem seems to be when DPS doesn't target your target, or the one you unloaded on (for me also marked). I can easily see a mage getting toasted in under 3sec if you didn't pick up on it ASAP.

That's the DPSer's fault and, in the opinion of some of here on this board, they deserve to be taught a lesson.

This can be quite useful, have an addon to know who aggroed something by being too close or hitting it when everyone was resting or getting ready.

I once got blamed for aggroing even though i was in stealth and standing right next to a holy paladin. The void creature in arc walked close to the entrance corridor the group was resting in and noticed him from the maximum aggro radius and went straight and him him.

And i got blamed for some reason. THey said creatures can still notice you in stealth.

Ya sure, when your standing right in their face but not from maximum nonstealth aggro radius, specially with someone standing near you.

In the end though, a keen eye will be just as good.

Or one of those addons which records your combat log [sometimes a fight will go past the length limit wow saves the log for] to see who got hit first or who hit first

tanking isn't just your job. it's the jobof the dps'ers to focus on your main target too. else yeah i'd teach em a lesson and let em die.

I use xpearl unit frames, and apart from looking great, they let you know the instant someone else has aggro (red border). So I agree with the most above that you should use it.

I also agree with Captjack. It's easy to post on the boards about everything you need to do while fighting, but it is a game and even if you have your pulls worked out and are on a guild run, things will go wrong mobs will hit the 'wrong' target. The few seconds an addon like xpearl give you can save a wipe (how useful is it to know the priest has aggro by watching them take a hit for 5k?).
