Wow, read the sticky.

When you open your pet window and see your grinning buddy, look for a face, yellow or green. This is your pets happiness meter. When you mouse over it, it will also tell you what type of food a particular pet prefers. Try to keep the food around the same level as your pet.

Not needed to have same level food as your pet. 16 level difference between pet and food is the point where you no longer gain the max hapiness per tick from food.

In other words at level 70 your pet can eat level 55 and gain 35 points of hapiness per tick(which is the max).

But if you are like me(cheap), you can do like I do. Train yourself a windserpent, que up for AV, mass loot the refreshment table, then leave AV.

Manna Biscuits are the best thing since sliced bread... wait.... anyway, I can eat the manna biscuits and gain health and mana, plus it is a bread so my windserpent can eat it as well to gain happiness. Free food FTW!

Watch your combat window when you’re feeding your pet. If your pet is getting 35 happiness per tick then you’re good to go. If its getting 17 happiness or less, try feeding it food that's a bit higher level. You can still feed your pet food that gives it 17 or 8 happiness per tick, but you’ll have to feed it more food to keep it happy.

The level range of food happiness is very generous. I was feeding my pink tallstrider the level 45 free berries from Felwood all the way through level 64. Once she hit level 65 I had to start feeding her level 55 food, which she’s still eating at level 70.

Also keep in mind that pets can eat food above their level. I’ve had higher level characters send low level characters food for their pets. So my hunter was carrying food that he wasn’t high enough level to eat, but his pet could.

Pets that eat meat or fish can also eat it raw. If you have a pet that eats meat, you can go around just fine by killing beasts that drop raw meat without having to cook it.

It's a lot cheaper than buying the stuff.
