Leveling a low petFollow

Guys, is there any special way to level up a pet that I've stabled for a while? I understand that the pet doesn't gain experience if I don't gain experience, right? But grinding on mobs green to me still drains lots of mana and is pretty slow. Am I missing something?

I don't think you do understand...

"the pet doesn't gain experience if I don't gain experience"

Equals

"the pet gain experience if I gain experience"

Maybe that makes it clearer.

While I note the slight sarcasm that probably makes you feel gleeful inside, you still didn't answer my question, and thus you were no help at all. I don't know why certain people on forums think that because they've been here longer means they can be rude [to no matter what degree] to other people who respectfully seek advice.

Can anyone else please enlighten me on whether there is a less mana/time intensive method to leveling a low-level pet than what I am currently doing?
#4 Jan 06 2008 at 8:25 PM Rating: Good
er, well if you're soloing, it's going to be mana-intensive since your pet probably won't be much help. you have to learn the art of kiting if you're soloing(which i'd rarely do anyways).

option 2: get into an instance.

option 3: get a buddy to watch your butt or partner with to kill mobs faster than you could do alone.

That's what I thought, too, until I tried grinding on gray mobs and noticed he wasn't gaining any experience. Learn something new every day, I suppose.

heh i was assuming you were fighting green+ con mobs. :)

I am not being sarcastic at all. What I did was answer your question in a way that if you actually think, you'll come up with the answer on your own. Your question could have been easily answered in the first place if you did come testing on your own, kill a green mob then kill a mob closer to your own level and watch how much exp your pet gets. Think next time before you come here expecting the answer to get given to you.

If you would read carefully, like the other person did, then you would have understood that I was asking whether or not there was a FASTER way to level. I mentioned that grinding on green mobs was still SLOW and MANA INTENSIVE.

And yes, you were being sarcastic. Don't play the self-righteous pseudo-clever ****** and try to cover it up.

EDIT: Gukagim, thanks for the ideas. I might as well get some instancing in, anyway.

Instead of being cryptic and trying to confuse him, you could have given him the answer with less effort (i.e. "No, you have to kill green mobs to level your pet").

or if your not in a hurry to get that specific pet up then wait until next patch when something is supposed to be done to ease the leveling of pets.
Dont know exactly what they have planned tho, might just be a slight increase of xp, but could also be that they get experience relative to thier own level.

And the asshat award goes to...

I'll agree with the other posters that the best way to level up your lowbie pet is to run some instances with him. But if you are running PUG's be sure to let the group know before you start that you are leveling a pet. That way they won't expect your pet to off-tank. I seriously doubt any of the groups will care...but it's better to warn them up front before they see your level 20 kitty running Ramps or something.

Not true at all, you can be an asshat when the asshatery info you post is correct

Hmm so if I turn in a load of quests does does any of that xp go towards my pet? No I don't think it does. tsk tsk tsk.

If you find that you must solo level your pet, I would suggest doing so in a way that will provide you with more than just a higher level pet. If you have a second goal to concentrate on, the pet leveling will seem to go faster. I’ve leveled pets while farming leather to sell in the AH and while farming reputation. Its still slow going, but it seems faster when you have something else to concentrate on.

Another thread in this forum mentioned grinding away at firewing point in Terrokar Forest. The warlocks there typically only used ranged attacks. Also they drop signets, useful for Scryer rep. If you're not working on Scryer reputation yourself, you can trade them for the equivalent Aldor rep tokens.

I've also ground out Consortium rep (beads) and Halaa rep (dust for research tokens) on the ogre warlocks and mages around Halaa and in the northwest corner of Nagrand. However those areas do not contain ranged attack exclusive mobs so a bit of chain trapping and kiting will be necessary.

JimmyDean, my blue armored boar from RFK is up to level 54. Sigh, only 16 more levels to go.

Ha I had the exact same problem. I got a new pet and it was 10 below me so I just went to the mobs that were in the middle of green and my level. Just send your pet at one of the NPC's and kill another yourself and then help your pet so now you killed it fast but you get two xp gains.

Experiencing this myself. Level 53 hunter and I wanted to pick up the armored boar from RFK which is level 26. The hunter takes a beating, but over the weekend with limited play I've managed to get the piggy up to level 32. It's just going to take time and patience I suppose.

As has been said, just instance a lot, its easier if you're not BM, and if anyone says that hes drawing aggro, just tell them that they have the same aggro radius as your own level.

Hm. DalaranCaine's posts seem to have mysteriously disappeared.

My hunter's alt's only level 57, so I can't yet take advantage of some of the Outlands caster mobs, but I did take that advice by grinding on caster mobs. Worked like a charm.

I also got lots of vendor trash for my epic mount and Runecloth out of it, which helps. Instancing pre-Outlands is hard because no one seems to want to do Strat, Scholo, or BRD anymore. They [myself too, to a certain extent] just want to get to 58 ASAP for l33t Outlands gear.

Which reminds me - is an epic mount even worth getting? Should I just save up the 5k for the flying mount? My Paladin got his epic through his quest so that wasn't a problem for him, but my hunter needs to sink the money.

You have to get the training (read here: Expensive part) one way or the other, so go ahead and get one.

Do like one of my friends did, got a mage to help him, they just rounded around 15 mobs up and AoE'd the crap out of em.

Edit: Bored enough to go into more detail, the hunter put down an explosive trap, or snake trap, then mage rounds up the mobs and runs over the trap, then froozes them, and AoE's them, and the hunter volleys too, with the pet on passive.

when i hit lv 65 i decided to try and lv up my boar pet which had been left in my stable since lv 37, i also found it hard to lv him up as he could not hold any aggro and kiting mobs was slow and high on mana so i put him back into the stable, and only got him out when i was doing guild instance runs, did not matter which one it was as long as i was getting xp i was happy as my pet was gaining xp also.

To start of with he was getting anything from 2-5 lv per run and once he hit lv 60 i hit lv 67 and went back to do all the old quests or ones i never took now he is lv 63 and i am 68, am still questing in terror forest which is nice lv for him to hold aggro and easy kills for me.

I did this too at 59 or so to get my boar back after being hacked and the rotten thieves disbanding him :(

It does indeed take time but there are some positives while you're levelling your beloved young pets ;)

*) You can practice kiting the green mobs ;)
*) Grind on rep giving mobs i.e. for Timbermaw, Argent Dawn, Scryer/Aldor etc etc
*) Grind casters as they go down quicker and allow you to shoot'um ;)
*) Grind on mobs that drop something worthwhile i.e. cloth, greens etc etc

**Note** as stated on previous posts - always try and get the lowest lvl mobs that give you xp as this way you lvl slow as possible while pet gets max xp :)

It is possible but does indeed take a long time but get there in end.. running instances where they don't mind your pet tagging along (be sure it stays back so as not to aggro stuff) is quicker but not as much challenge ;)
