Topic suggestion: the wow player populations inability (or unwillingness) to see outside of the wow world regarding wow game play. (All of the following observations come from the O-boards, I find alla boards to have a significantly more intelligent/balanced tone).
Every class forum is filled with threads of the forms: "our class is broken, the sky is falling, I am typing DELETE," and "What spec will pwn in the arena?"
Concordantly, almost every forum contains threads of the "pvp is completely imbalanced" opinion, either being "horde wins too much," "my class is UP," or "your class is OP." Let's not omit the most important tag line to all these threads "Blizzard is a bunch of retarded monkeys for not seeing this and fixing it." If you looked at the Patriots 16-0 vs. the Dolphins 1-15, would you call the NFL imbalanced and demand a rule change to football that nerfs the Patriots?
The Alla boards, IMO, are more balanced in that many posters put things in perspective of other games they have played. The only time I see this on the O-boards is when someone threatens to quit wow, usually coupled with a "WTB Warhammer beta" statement.
I only recently started thinking about wow game play in the wider context of all video games, mostly because I just started playing Team Fortress 2. I really only play WOW for the pvp, and discovering TF2 with its pvp, with no leveling, with no gear grind, with no monthly fee, with the ability to switch class any time during a battle to adjust to a developing situation, made me start thinking about WOW differently.
Ok, if you have read this far, last paragraph, I promise.... LOL at myself.
World of Warcraft may go down in history as the most popular MMORPG of all time. It's PvE is second to none. As far as PvP, and "balance" goes, it is my belief (as a professional programmer) that it is absolutely impossible to "balance" competing classes in which their are literally millions of variables. Any time Blizz changes any talent, in any tree, of any class, it effects PvP in it's entirety. I can think of no meaningful way to quantify PvP balance. Class vs class win-loss records? No, every class has a counter class. What is a reasonable win % against a counter class? 10%? 25%? You could go to spec vs. spec win %, but gear matters. Spec/gear vs. spec gear win %?
I just forgot what was the point I wanted to make. Feel free to make fun of me to liven up the boards. And I lied about above being my last paragraph.
Oh now i remember. WOW is a video game. There is an enjoyment associated with beating a game, like Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior (lol). This is obtainable in WOW as a PvE player. Once you focus on PvP, it becomes like a sport. The win % of the entire population must balance to 0.500.
AH F**k it, I forget my point again. Gotta quit smoking the funny stuff.
