Macro or Rotation?Follow

#1 Jan 05 2008 at 1:10 PM Rating: Good

I've been wondering about which way is the best to maximize DPS, the steady shot macro, or if using Quartz and timing the shots is the way to go. Anyone have any experience or advice that they'd care to share?

Thanks :)

Spamming a macro is usually the best for timing, however you cant always use a macro so you should also have an autoshot timer and be capable of doing your own rotation.

I would personally use the macro, only because it seems to eliminate the possibility of clipping auto-shots. However, I've heard that if you're getting a lot of latency the macro will miss (I've experienced this, as well). I'd keep both around so that if you are getting latency you can adjust and shoot manaully to try to compensate, but if you have relatively low lag... the macro is the way to go.

I hope this helps! =)

Thanks for the advice guys!!! :)

Just another couple of questions,

1. Anyone got a good auto shot timer mod that they'd recommend?

2. I've been using the macro from the sticky

#showtooltip Steady Shot
/script UIErrorsFrame:Hide()
/castsequence reset=3 Steady Shot, Auto Shot
/cast [exists,target=pettarget] Kill Command
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear(); UIErrorsFrame:Show()

The reset 3 in there means to wait 3 seconds right? I'm currently using the Wolfslayer Sniper Rifle which has a 2.70 speed. Doesn't this mean I miss .3 seconds on every macro rotation? (meaning 1/9 auto shots clipped?)

If you're BM and using the Wolfslayer, you will be quite sensitive to latency. If you have upwards of 200 ms, I would recommend against using the macro. You will be doing better dps with a timer.
There is a very good, albeit long thread on tkasomething, Sunfury vs Wolfslayer which among other things covers this. Worth reading.

you need to change the 3.0 to your ranged attackspeed.
(with wolfslayer you'll have a speed of 1.96(BM) or 2.35 (MM/SV) so adjust to that.)

Thanks Aethien, but how are you getting these numbers?

2.7 speed weapon

Serpent's Swiftness: +20% speed.
Quiver/Pouch: +15% speed.

MM/SV: 115% speed so 1.15
BM: 115% x 120% = 1.15 x 1.2 = 1.38

2.7 / 1.15 = 2.35 (well, 2.34782608........etc)
2.7 / 1.38 = 1.96 (1.95652173....... etc)

Edit: here is more math concerning weapon speeds and a link to cheeky explaining a lot of it.
It comes down to you wanting to get a 1.8-1.9 attack speed after haste for an optimal 1:1 shooting cycle or a 2.25-2.35 attack speed for an optimal 1:1.5 cycle.

Optimal Weapon Speeds before haste calculations:
BM: 1:1 rotation: 2.5-2.6, 1:1.5 rotation 3.0-3.1
MM/SV: 1:1 rotation: 2.2-2.3, 1:1.5 rotation 2.6-2.7
And a 1:1 rotation is the better one for dps vs mana and thus the better one for bossfights.

Since there arent any lvl 70 2.2-2.3 speed ranged weapons, the thing you want most is a 2.5-2.7 speed weapon (depending on spec), and because 2.5 speed weapons also dont excist you'll be aiming for a 2.6-2.7 speed weapon.
The only epic ranged weapons with those speeds are guns (Dos Santos, Veteran's Musket, Wolfslayer and Barrel-Blade Longrifle) bowlovers are fUcked.

Rare weapons dont include a 2.6 speed bow either..... nor a crossbow.

Ofcourse, if you cant get a weapon with the right speed go for one 0.1 slower wich includes a couple of bows/crossbows.

In case you are now thinking 'so ******* what? like i care about weapon speeds' You've got to realise that because of our mechanics weaponspeed is very important for our dps making wolfslayer and barrel-blade some of the very best weapons ingame despite their "low" itemlvl's.

yes, this makes me cry inside too....... i want bows =(

I do not believe that this is correct. Reset = 3 means that the shot sequence will reset to the first listed shot 3 seconds after the macro is not used. It has no direct relationship to the weapon speed, since the macro (as set up in the example above) will be used in between Auto Shots to fire Steady Shots.

I use it, it ****** up badly before i changed the speed.
It doesnt now.

That is because of killcommand.
If you have reset=3 it will keep trying to cast KC until those 3 seconds have passed.
With your attack speed listed it will stop trying to cast KC as soon as your autoshot is ready.

Or, just use the normal SS/AS macro and click KC as much as you can :)

My macro uses reset=3, and I have no problems at all with Kill Command delaying other shots. BM Hunter, 5/5 SS, 15% quiver, Steelhawk Crossbow. No where near a 3 shot speed, and no problem. Your issue must have been elsewhere, because it wasn't with the reset timer.

This is actually not true. The reset means that after 3 seconds of not pressing the macro button, it will reset. If you are spamming the macro it will never reset, kill command or not. With a fast bow, kill command will sometimes slightly clips the autoshot, but if you are spamming the macro it will not be a serious problem.

From what I have heard, the above is true, Aethien.

Edit: I can't spell anymore, not even with firefox's spellcheck :P

Sorry about bothering you guys again but, I got another question :)

I recently snagged a Arrow-Fall Chestguard which adds 30 haste rating to my attacks. Is this going to adversely affect my shot rotation?Do I need to make any changes to the macro?

No. 20 Haste Rating is a 1.27% speed increase. You won't even notice the difference, and your macro never needs adjusting for speed changes.

2.3.2 brought some changes to the macro code. You now need to prepend Auto Shot with a '!'.

So the macro from the sticky should now read:
#showtooltip Steady Shot
/script UIErrorsFrame:Hide()
/castsequence reset=3 Steady Shot, !Auto Shot
/cast [exists,target=pettarget] Kill Command
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear(); UIErrorsFrame:Show()

Of course, there are still other changes to consider. The following macro will occasionally fire two simultaneous Steady Shots. It can be modified for occasional double Multi or Arcane (I don't have Aimed so I don't know if it can double that shot). Be prepared to drink more mana potions, however. And I'd expect to see this patched away shortly.

/cast !Auto shot
/cast [target=pettarget, exists] Kill command
/cast Steady shot
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear()

Really, I don't see what the big deal people make out of this is. You don't need a macro, you don't need a timer, you just need to be observant.
Your goal, as far as shot rotation is concerned, is to use your special shot cooldowns as often as you can in between and while not interrupting your auto shot cadence. In fact, you WANT your shots to be on cooldown all the time. If they are, it means you're using them consistently and the more they're on cooldown, the closer you are to using them again.
With that, I'm not going to give you a shot rotation, but I will say that Multi is 10 seconds and Arcane is 6 seconds on cooldown. Thus, I like to use Multi first, then Arcane (with the auto shot cadence in between, of course). Once your shots are charging back up, you're in Steady/Auto shot mode. What you want to do is hit your steady shot at the exact moment your auto shot fires so that you can alternate them without slowing your cadence.
Personally, I use a this macro that does the same thing and saves a button:
/castsequence reset=6 arcane shot, steady shot, steady shot. This will put Arcane shot on the button if it is ready to use, and steady shot otherwise.

If your goal is to run dry of mana as soon as possible and then switch to AotV and Auto Fire only while waiting to regen mana, then this is a decent plan. Otherwise, in order to provide your raids with a consistently high and long duration of damage output while not risking either breaking CC or pulling aggro, a more thoughtful shot rotation is advisable.

Your plan is suitable for PvP play, but won't impress many people with whom you group for PvE.

Tested and true. The macros posted and used so far will still allow you to spam a single macro to try and beat human error from messing up a fast shot rotation though, so they are still just as useful as they were pre 2.3.2.

Castsequence macroes might still be a bit better though.
