Thats me, though.

Anyway, like you could guess, I'm just starting WoW, and I'm the type of guy that played light side in Knights of the Old Republilic, saved the little sisters in Bioshock, and was a good guy in Fable. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, then you're not a gamer. lol. Anywho, I like being the good guy, but I also want to put on the hurt, or DPS as I hear its called. My co-worker, who got me into the idea of playing, says that retribution specced paladins can't really put out the damage of other classes, but I'm willing to put in effort to make it so.

He said something about a patch making them better for groups, but what about PvP? I've heard their damage somewhat plateaus at 50, but can they still do well in battlegrounds at high levels?

Thank you very much for your help.

ProTip: Dilbrt responds to every mention of the Retribution tree with "lawl ret".

Ret's good for leveling up until about level 50, after which their damage sort of tops off. Many people respec holy or prot once they get into Outlands. My first advice would be to read the Captain's stickied FAQ at the top of the forum topic list thingy.

The basic idea is that paladins either heal or tank. "Paladin DPS" is a mythical entity, a Holy Grail of monumental proportions, which all paladins secretly desire to find but which probably doesn't exist. Until there's a major rethinking of how Retribution works, it's not considered a viable end-game build. If you're still stuck on Ret, talk to Tommyguns.

What the heck is this? Is it like a tooltip? Mouse over me and see "Laughs at ret, argues against prot main tanks and isn't above putting foot into mouth"?

It's a common forum usage. I'm not sure where it originates, though.

Ret can be viable...but be prepared to work harder than all other dps classes for similar result. Even then poorly played dps classes with equal gear will probably out dps you by a small margin.

As for pvp you can find success in BGs and maybe 5v5 arenas. (Again, you'll have to be the best player there to be comparable.)

If you want dps roll a pure dps class, imo.

Well, if you want DPS and to still be able to heal (though not instance healing at high levels without being specced for it) you could roll a feral druid or an enhancement or elemental shaman. However, elemental shamans are terrible to level pre-58, and well...shamans just don't work out very well in PvP, sadly enough.

Personally, I've got an enhancement shammy, a protection paladin, and a balance druid (I know, everyone lawl at the oomkin) and they're all very fun, and each is very different to play. Shammy toasts squishies, has a harder time with heavily armored guys (though not a hard time), protection pally rocks bigs groups of non-casters (and has issues fighting casters) and the balance druid really doesn't have trouble with anything except running out of mana or having to fight inside (when fighting outside, it's exceptionally rare for anything to actually hit me.)

But...yeah, paladin is definitely not where you want to be if you want to be a champion at the DPS. I'd say we're probably the best support class, great multi-mob tanks, and wonderful single target healers, but paladins definitely don't shine in the DPS department.

I have always been an advocate of play what you like. That being said if you wish to DPS playing a Paladin is perhaps one of the worst choices you can make.

Retribution levels strong 10-60 but the further you get into Burning Crusade the more it starts to fall apart. It can go from feeling like the best class in the game at lvl 52 to being completely useless at lvl 65. I've leveled 3 classes to end game and only Paladin has ever had the much of a shift.

They are not useless, however as a build/class they have a large stigma and a number of limitations which make the less than optimum. Play what you like, just be aware of the situation.

See? That's what Ret does to you. Even just seeing one gets you all confuddled.

Seriously though, play what you want. If you want to make a Ret Paly work, and want to deal with the sh*t people give you, more power to ya. I'm gonna respec Ret for a bit once I finish my set as well, so we'll see how that goes.
