Hi again rawriors!

As the title states, is 17/44 viable to off tank Kara?? What is THE fury off tank build these days?? I ran 17/44 (or 17/44/3) for a while, I loved it, pure make love type damage. Then I went into Prot(and out of nowhere 5 other tanks show up in the guild). So now were going to get a Kara group going and I'm being asked to come out as the fury off tank. My gear is lacking atm, but I can meet the "minimums". Now all I need to figure out is which item switching add on to get, and which build to use. Any help is very much appreciated as always :)

The reason this even comes to mind is because there is no way I can reach the 490 def to not get crit unless I go into prot. So before respeccing 5 times to figure it out, I figured I'd ask you guys.

Check the Warrior FAQ thread at the top of the page. It has an Arms/Prot hybrid build suggestion, but I haven't seen the fury one in the thread. It might be in there, but I only skimmed through it. If you want to be fury, just keep the points in Prot, and replace most of the arms talents and with ones in the fury tree...and voila!

The other thing is if you get some arena gear (S1 shield specifically your def cap will go down to 472; source: http://www.theoryspot.com/forums/gear-lists-rankings/32083-berg-s-tank-gear-rankings-11-16-2007-wow-2-3-a.html

This should help with the def cap. Of course, you don't get the benefits derived from the def points, but as an OT you should be ok.

Cheers!

A DPS build is fine to OT in kara. You'd be doing a disservice to yourself and the raid if you spec'd into a hybrid build (something like 35/5/21). All you really have to do is hold the aggro on trash, OT Attumen when he pops, maintain 2nd on the threat list for Moroes, and possibly do some tanking on the Opera event (R&J, and possibly WoO), all of which you can do fine with a DPS spec.

Aside from those few instances, having two prot tanks is wasting a DPS spot. If you're a hybrid build, your DPS is going to be less than it should be, and you'll just be taking up space that would be better suited for someone spec'd for pure DPS. Just make sure that you have a decent set of tanking gear. You'll need to be able to get to 490 defense and I'd say 12K HP in gear alone.

Hope that helps. Good luck!

Thank You Camel, thats the kind of response I was looking for. I think I atm don't have 490 def in my gear w/o having putting some points into anticipation, but maybe if I regem the gear I do have with +def I make make it. As prot I have 491 def, 11k HP(could get the 12k mark with chants)and 12.5k armor unbuffed.

Pigeon, (Also no disrespec intended for RPZip, but the build you suggest is probably one of the worst builds I've ever seen to OT or do anything else.) I know this is a pro-arms forum, and I don't do arms :)

Anyway thank you guys for the feedback, much appreciated.

Keep in mind that the hybrid build in the FAQ was before the recent talent changes for warriors. I did in fact use the 35/5/21 build from 60-70 ( I started as 31/5/15 at 60 and filled the rest of the points out as I leveled), as it was a great hybrid build for leveling and tanking instances. However, it is not meant to be any sort of end game build past running 5 mans. At 70 you need to decide whether you want to DPS or tank, and spec yourself accordingly.

this isn't a pro-arms forum, it's just generally known as a fact that an arms/prot focused OT build usually does a bit better than a fury/prot one.

That being said, 17/44 is fine to tank kara, I wouldn't even go as far to say you need 12k hp and 490 defense until say.. ot'ing NS in kara. Just have good avoidance really. For trash you can have less defense. If needed be, resocket a few gems for def/stam, but don't worry about putting points into anticipation if you're expected to, or hoping to dps.

As you said, you gear is lacking and you can't reach the 490 defense cap... what CAN you reach? Also, are you using any gear with resilience on it?

try 8/41/12. you miss out on the damage bonus from impale, but you get the core dps talents in the fury tree, defense bonus from anticipation, armor bonus from toughness, and your last stand oh **** button. enough dps to help out on single-tank pulls, and enough survivability to OT kara. ofc, someone feel free to debate me on this build.

I used a similar build when I was leveling. Mine was actually 17/41/3. Arms into Impale, Fury all the way to Rampage, and three points in Tactical Mastery. It's alot of DPS and Tactical Mastery gives you just enough extra threat to keep stuff on you. Great for normal 5-mans...I also used this build to off tank Kara. In my full tank gear, I only have around 470+def, so I'm close to the cap but not quite there yet. I did fine using that build. The only time I died is when I got asked to OT Roar....he hurts :(
